The effect of air pollution on the environment, economic and health of the people in the affected countries cannot be overemphasized. Some of the major air pollutants are ozone (O3), particulate matter (PM), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), carbon dioxide (CO2), sulfur dioxide (SO2), carbon monoxide (CO). Some of these pollutants occur naturally in the environment and some are generated through man-made activities.
PM pollution is a portion of air pollution that is made up of extremely
small particles and liquid droplets containing acids, organic chemicals,
metals, and soil or dust particles. Exposure to ground level ozone can lead
to respiratory symptoms, and airway inflammation, lung epithelial
damage and decrease in mucociliary clearance [1] A high concentration of NO2 can irritate airways in the respiratory system, and can aggravate and cause the development of respiratory diseases, particularly asthma [1]. Some of the effects of carbon monoxide pollution include fatigue, decreased oxygen-carrying capacity, impaired perfusion from hypoxic cardiac function, and cellular hypoxia [1]. A high concentration of CO2 is partly responsible for global warming, and it reduces the fertility of marine animals [1]. In humans, CO2 pollution can cause cardiac arrhythmias and seizures, severe acidosis and anoxia [1]. Exposure to ammonia (NH3) can cause immediate burning of the nose, throat and respiratory tract, bronchiolar and alveolar edema, airway destruction, and respiratory distress or failure [1]. Air pollution also has a detrimental effect on climate and agricultural crops [1].
Air Quality Index (AQI) is used by government agencies to communicate to the public how polluted the air currently is or how polluted it is forecast to become. Many countries monitor ground-level ozone (O3), particulate matter (PM), sulfur dioxide (SO2), carbon monoxide (CO), and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and calculate their national AQI based on these pollutants. The definition of the AQI in a particular nation is determined by the development of national air quality standards in that nation.
The monitoring of air pollution concentrations is done using Ground Monitoring Stations that cannot measure the relevant parameters at altitudes above ground level. Further more, these Ground Monitoring Stations, even when they do detect dangerous air pollution concentrations that exceed nationally determined thresholds, they are unable to perform any air pollution abatement or removal to reduce or eliminate any of the air pollutants.
We are looking to develop a technology solution that automates the detection, measurement, monitoring, and abatement of GreenHouse Gases (GHGs) - (Methane (CH4), Carbon Dioxide (CO2), Carbon Monoxide (CO), Particulate Matter (P.M.2.5 and P.M.10), Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2), Sulfur Dioxide (SO2), and Ozone (O3)), at altitudes above ground level in any and all countries.

Environmental Drones or E-drones are Programmed Autonomous Drones used for pollution monitoring (CH4, CO2, CO, O3, P.M.2.5, P.M. 10, NO2, and SO2), detection, and abatement at altitudes above ground level in a specific geographic region. E-drones produce Air Quality Index (AQI) maps of covered regions for environmental data monitoring and long-term analysis.
The Environmental Drone (E-drone) can be operated every hour to measure the AQI at a particular location, or it can be adjusted depending on the desired frequency. The drone determines it has sufficient battery power before the start of take off from ground level. Each drone is equipped with a Solar Panel Power Base Charger that contains a Solar Panel and an additional long-term battery for automatic charging of the E-drone. This is the landing pad for the Environmental Drone and it connects to it once it lands on the ground.
The E-drone takes off when automatic power is supplied to the rotors of the drone using ESCs, and the drone flies up to a pre-determined altitude, Ealtitude, as pre-determined. The height is measured using an onboard altimeter. The pre-determined height is chosen to have the maximum effect when pollution abatement is implemented for any detected pollution concentration that is excessive.
Once the E-drone gets to the Ealtitude, it hovers at that location and measures the environmental data at that point. The air pollution concentrations for the following pollutants are measured: SO2, NO2, P.M.2.5, P.M10, O3, CO2, CO, NH3 and CH4. If any of the measured pollutants exceed a concentration that is above a pre-determined threshold, the E-drone implements the on-board abatement solution for that particular pollutant. The volume of the pollution abatement solution released depends on the concentration level of the pollutants detected. This ensures that the pollution concentration level is brought down to acceptable levels. These on-board abatement options are used to alter measured high AQHI of pollutants and are carried out at the Ealtitude.
The E-drone descends back to the Solar Panel Base Charger on the ground, and then transmits the measured data to Environmental Monitoring Stations. It also sends in the pollution abatement data that was performed, if any.
Multiple E-Drones are used to obtain GHG Emissions detection and abatement data at different sites and locations. A Custom-Designed AQI software is utilized to view the Drone Data acquired by Individual Environmental Drones, showing the measured AQI for different locations within the specified region.

The target population for the Environmental Drones are the citizens of countries who are affected by air pollution.
In particular, we are interested in fabricating and deploying the Environmental Drones across the States of USA and United Kingdom.
The effects of air pollution on the citizens in these countries have already been highlighted and detailed above and are provided in the reference material.
Finding and deploying a technology that will automate the monitoring and maintenance of the air quality in any nation will have a significantly positive impact on the environment, economy, and health of the citizens in that nation.
As mentioned before, there are is automated technology to measure and abate air pollution at altitudes above ground level. Therefore citizens in countries where air pollution is present are currently underserved.
The Environmental Drones will enable countries to detect, monitor, and
maintain the desired purity of their air quality automatically and autonomously.
This will prevent the financial losses due to health-related illnesses that arise from air pollution, and will also preserve the environment of the country.
