Bikasave - Unlocking AgriTech
- Uganda
- Nonprofit
The Bikasave an initiative of Wilmat Development Foundation aims to tackle the critical challenges confronting Uganda's agricultural sector, which relies on over 80% of the population but grapples with issues like restricted access to high-quality agro-inputs, diminished productivity, and financial marginalization. Despite being the cornerstone of the economy, smallholder farmers encounter barriers to modern agricultural techniques, struggle to secure affordable financing, and frequently incur post-harvest losses due to inadequate storage and market connections. These hurdles perpetuate poverty, food insecurity, and susceptibility to climate change impacts, underscoring the immediate necessity for comprehensive interventions such as Bikasave. This initiative seeks to empower rural smallholder farmers, enhance productivity, and bolster resilience within the agricultural sector.
Bikasave is an integrated platform that revolutionizes agriculture in Uganda by connecting smallholder farmers with vital resources and services. It offers a user-friendly online marketplace where farmers can access high-quality agricultural inputs such as seeds and fertilizers. Additionally, Bikasave provides financial products like savings and loans through its digital platform, empowering farmers to invest in their farms and businesses. Through partnerships with experts and organizations, Bikasave delivers valuable agricultural knowledge and training to farmers, equipping them with the skills to improve productivity and sustainability. By leveraging digital technology, Bikasave streamlines the agricultural value chain, enhances market access by connecting farmers to ready market and fosters economic resilience in rural communities.
Bikasave's solution primarily serves 3 million smallholder subsistence farmers in Uganda, particularly those facing limited access to agricultural inputs and financial services. These farmers are often underserved due to remote locations, poor infrastructure, and limited market access. By providing a comprehensive platform for accessing high-quality agricultural inputs, financial services, and market opportunities, Bikasave aims to empower these farmers economically. The solution addresses their needs by offering convenient access to essential resources, reducing reliance on middlemen, improving productivity, and increasing household income, ultimately leading to greater resilience and prosperity for farming communities.

Our business model revolves around providing value to smallholder farmers in Uganda by addressing key challenges they face in accessing agricultural inputs, financial services, and markets. We offer a comprehensive online-offline platform called Bikasave, which connects farmers directly with high-quality agricultural inputs, financial products, and market opportunities.
Key components of our business model include:
1. Access to Agricultural Inputs: We partner with suppliers to source high-quality seeds, fertilizers, pesticides, and tools, which we make available to farmers through our platform. By aggregating demand and negotiating bulk purchases, we ensure competitive prices and reliable access to inputs.
2. Financial Services: We facilitate access to financial services such as savings, credit, and insurance tailored to the needs of smallholder farmers. Through partnerships with financial institutions, we offer affordable and accessible financial products that enable farmers to invest in their farms, manage risks, and improve their livelihoods.
3. Market Access: We connect farmers directly with buyers, including local markets, cooperatives, and agribusinesses, to ensure fair prices and timely sales of their produce. By streamlining supply chains and reducing dependence on middlemen, we empower farmers to capture more value from their crops and expand their market reach.
4. Technology Platform: Our online platform serves as a central hub where farmers can access information, place orders, manage their finances, and connect with other stakeholders in the agricultural value chain. Through intuitive interfaces and mobile applications, we ensure ease of use and accessibility for farmers, even in remote areas with limited internet connectivity.
5. Revenue Streams: We generate revenue through various channels, including transaction fees from input sales, commissions from financial products, subscription fees for premium services, and advertising revenue. By offering a range of value-added services and building a loyal user base, we aim to achieve sustainable revenue growth while delivering meaningful impact to smallholder farmers.
Overall, our business model is designed to create a win-win scenario where farmers benefit from improved access to inputs, finance, and markets, while generating revenue streams that support the scalability and sustainability of our platform.
- Individual consumers or stakeholders (B2C)
Our plan for achieving financial sustainability revolves around leveraging multiple revenue streams to cover our operational expenses and drive growth. We generate revenue through:
1. Sales: By applying a 20% mark-up on the sale of farm inputs, we generate income from each transaction.
2. Interest on Credit Sales: We charge a 3% interest fee on credit transactions, providing a source of revenue while offering flexible payment options to our customers.
3. Transaction Fees: Our platform charges a 10% commission fee on sales made through our platform, ensuring a sustainable income stream from transactions facilitated on our platform.
4. Delivery Fees: We charge a flat fee of $2-5 for the delivery of farm inputs, adding convenience for our customers while generating additional revenue.
These revenue streams collectively contribute to our financial sustainability, allowing us to cover operational costs, invest in technology enhancements, and expand our reach to serve more farmers effectively.
To date, we have successfully implemented this revenue model and have seen positive results. Our sales and transaction fees have consistently generated revenue, while interest on credit sales has provided additional income. Moreover, delivery fees have contributed to our revenue stream while offering value-added services to our customers. Additionally, our platform's user growth and increasing sales volume are indicators of the effectiveness of our revenue model.
We have also secured grants (Won $5,000 grant that we used to reach 500 farmers, employed 3 full time and 6 part time staff, 10 suppliers, 5 off takers) and investments to support our initial operations and scale-up efforts. These funds have been instrumental in developing our platform, building partnerships, and expanding our reach. Moving forward, we will continue to optimize our revenue streams, explore new opportunities for growth, and strengthen our financial sustainability to ensure the long-term success of our solution.
