Duitin: Towards a Restorative and Regenerative Future
- Indonesia
- For-profit, including B-Corp or similar models
Duitin addresses the critical challenge of inefficient waste management in Indonesia, a problem that has both local and global implications. Indonesia generates approximately 70 million tonnes of waste annually, with a significant portion inadequately managed, leading to environmental pollution and health hazards. This situation mirrors a global crisis, where inadequate waste management systems contribute to ocean pollution and greenhouse gas emissions, affecting communities worldwide.
The specific issues Duitin tackles include:
- Inefficiency and Fragmentation: Indonesia's waste management system is plagued by inefficiencies and a lack of integration, resulting in ineffective waste processing and increased environmental degradation.
- Low Recycling Rates: Despite the high potential for recycling, a significant amount of recyclable materials are lost to landfills or contamination, largely due to poor collection practices and the absence of segregation at the source.
- Economic Disadvantage for Waste Pickers: Over 90% of waste collected for recycling in Indonesia is picked by informal workers who face economic insecurity and poor working conditions.
Duitin is a holistic waste management platform designed to revolutionize the recycling ecosystem in Indonesia by leveraging technology to streamline waste collection, enhance recycling rates, and improve the livelihoods of waste pickers. Our solution comprises a mobile app and web platform that connects households, businesses, and waste pickers, creating a more efficient and transparent waste management process from collection to recycling.
How Duitin Works:
- Collection: Duitin simplifies waste collection by allowing users to schedule pickups through our app, ensuring waste is segregated at the source. This direct-from-source collection minimizes contamination and maximizes recyclability.
- Organize: Every step of the waste journey is documented and made transparent through our platform. Users can track their waste, seeing where it goes and how it's recycled, fostering trust and accountability in the recycling process.
- Processing: We've established Material Recovery Facilities (MRFs) that use cutting-edge technology to sort and process recyclables more efficiently. These facilities ensure that more waste is repurposed, reused, or recycled, significantly reducing the amount that ends up in landfills.
Duitin serves multiple segments of the Indonesian population, each affected by the inefficiencies of the current waste management system, yet in different ways. Our solution directly impacts:
- Households: Many families in Indonesia lack access to convenient and effective recycling services. Duitin makes recycling accessible and rewarding for these households by providing an easy-to-use platform for scheduling waste pickup and ensuring that their waste is responsibly managed. By incentivizing recycling through our platform, we encourage sustainable practices at the household level, contributing to environmental conservation and fostering a culture of recycling.
- Waste Pickers: This group, often marginalized and operating under poor conditions, plays a vital role in Indonesia’s recycling ecosystem. Duitin improves their lives by formalizing their role, offering fair compensation, and providing safer working conditions. Our platform ensures that waste pickers are integrated into the formal economy, recognizing their contribution and enhancing their livelihoods through stable income opportunities and increased job security.
- Businesses and Corporations: Many businesses struggle to implement effective waste management and recycling practices due to logistical challenges and lack of infrastructure. Duitin offers businesses a comprehensive waste management solution that not only helps them comply with environmental regulations but also improves their sustainability credentials. By utilizing our platform, businesses can monitor and manage their waste more efficiently, reducing their environmental footprint and contributing positively to their community’s well-being.
Impact on Lives:
- For households, Duitin reduces the hassle associated with waste disposal and recycling, making it easier to contribute to a cleaner environment. This convenience, coupled with incentives for recycling, encourages more sustainable living practices.
- For waste pickers, our solution provides a significant uplift in their quality of life. By offering a more stable income and better working conditions, Duitin helps to alleviate poverty among this demographic, providing them with dignity and a path to socio-economic mobility.
- For businesses, Duitin’s solution enables them to tackle waste management more effectively, leading to cost savings in the long term, improved brand image, and compliance with local and international environmental standards.

Duitin's solution team comprises approximately 63 full-time staff members who are dedicated to driving our mission forward across all aspects of our operations. Additionally, we have around 7 part-time staff members who support our efforts, particularly spread out across our coverage areas to ensure local needs and operations are effectively managed. This team structure allows us to maintain a strong presence in our current service areas while also providing the flexibility needed to adapt to local conditions and opportunities for expansion.
Duitin's journey began at the end of 2019, initiated by myself and two co-founders with our roots in scavenging in Bandung. We started developing our app in January 2020 and launched it in July 2020, marking a significant step towards transforming waste management. Over these nearly 4 years, our team has grown significantly, expanding beyond development to include operations, commercial activities, and partnerships. This growth reflects our dedication to improving recycling practices and our solution's impact.
Duitin is committed to fostering a diverse, equitable, and inclusive environment, where barriers to opportunity are minimized, and all team members feel welcomed and valued. Our approach to diversity extends beyond formal education; we prioritize honesty, curiosity, and a continuous desire to learn when onboarding team members.
A testament to our commitment is our practice of promoting from within based on merit and potential, rather than formal qualifications alone. For instance, our current National Lead of Operations started with Duitin as a waste picker. Demonstrating a keen interest in learning and advancement, they transitioned to a driver before rising to a leadership position. Similarly, our Bandung Lead, who began as a picker, has shown remarkable progress, moving from having no laptop skills to leading operations for the entire city.
These examples highlight our belief in providing opportunities for growth and advancement to all employees, regardless of their background. By embracing diversity in its broadest sense, including social, cultural, and identity-based attributes, we aim to create an environment where everyone has access to opportunities and feels respected, supported, and valued. Duitin continues to strive towards becoming even more diverse, equitable, and inclusive, recognizing these principles as integral to our success and impact
Duitin's business model generates revenue through three primary channels, directly tied to our sustainable waste management services:
- App Revenue: We charge fees for transactions facilitated through our app, such as waste pickup and recycling services. Additionally, we generate income by selling digital products within the app, catering to our environmentally conscious user base.
- B2B Revenue: We offer corporate subscriptions for businesses seeking comprehensive waste management solutions, aligning with their sustainability goals. Revenue also comes from collaborative projects with business partners aimed at enhancing their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives.
- MRF Revenue: At our Material Recovery Facility (MRF), we process collected recyclables and sell them to manufacturers, providing a critical supply of materials for their production processes.
- Individual consumers or stakeholders (B2C)
Duitin is on a path to financial sustainability by focusing on building a profitable business model that leverages our waste management services. Our revenue generation strategy is anchored in diversifying income through app transactions, corporate subscriptions, and the sale of recyclables, aimed at ensuring a steady income flow. To bolster our financial foundation and fuel growth, we're engaging with venture capital investors who share our vision for long-term sustainability and environmental impact. The positive response from these investors underscores the viability of our approach.
In addition to these efforts, we're exploring expansion into new markets and forming strategic partnerships, including potential service contracts with governments, to widen our revenue base. This strategy not only aims to cover our operational costs but also to reinvest in our mission, driving further innovation and expansion. The commitment we've seen from users and the interest from aligned investors serve as a testament to our business model's potential for success and sustainability. Through these concerted efforts, Duitin is set to achieve financial sustainability while continuing to make a significant impact on global waste management practices.
