The specific problem that VeggyBud is endeavoring to tackle is the profound unsustainability plaguing the agricultural sector.
By 2050, the global population is projected to soar to over 12 billion people. This rapid increase in population correlates with a surge in food demand, necessitating the expansion of farming operations. However, as cities burgeon, farms must sprawl further into natural habitats, exacerbating the loss of biodiversity. The relentless conversion of pristine landscapes into farmland persists due to inadequate land stewardship by farmers, resulting in soil degradation, erosion, and the hardening of soil from heavy machinery. This compromised soil health not only jeopardizes our food supply but also hampers our ability to combat climate change, as healthy soil serves as a vital carbon sink.
Furthermore, the agricultural sector exerts excessive pressure on freshwater resources, exacerbating water scarcity. Farmers' reliance on pesticides and chemical products not only leads to biodiversity loss but also exacerbates environmental degradation.
Additionally, agriculture stands as a significant contributor to greenhouse gas emissions, accounting for over a quarter of global emissions. This highly unsustainable industry's sprawling land use, mismanagement of freshwater resources, and rampant use of chemical inputs collectively contribute to its colossal carbon footprint, perpetuating the climate crisis.
Moreover, the inefficiencies within the agricultural supply chain result in a staggering 30-40% of all produced food going to waste, further intensifying its adverse environmental impact.
This confluence of factors positions agriculture as one of the foremost contributors to climate change, making it imperative to revolutionize farming practices and promote sustainable alternatives like VeggyBud.
The solution depends on two systems.
The first system is the farms. Here, products are grown in a sustainable way. Therefore, it can't be a conventional farm. That's why we make use of so-called 'farms of the future'. These are aqua-, aero- or hydroponic farms, vertical and container farms, urban farms, rooftop farms, ocean farms, and sustainable farms which will be used to grow the crops to feed the world of tomorrow. These farms are way more energy and water-efficient, emit way fewer greenhouse gases, use no chemical products, and take up less space. These farms could be owned and controlled by VeggyBud but could also be other sustainable farms or even come straight out of your neighbor's garden. Even though I only talked about plants, doesn't mean I want to end meat. I consider meat an important part of a human's diet, but this project focuses on growing crops. The project wants greener food, not only figuratively, but also literally, we want to put together a healthier diet for the world.
But back to your neighbor's garden, because that's where the second system plays a role. This is an app. Via this app, you will be able to buy healthy, sustainably produced foods in your area. You will only be able to buy food in an area with a certain radius, and this to not only limit the time you need to wait but also to limit food miles. Not needing to wait long for the arrival of your food could lead to ordering smaller quantities because if it isn't enough you just order more, and therefore contributing to wasting less food.
VeggyBud is designed to serve a diverse array of individuals and communities, all united by the common goal of fostering a more sustainable and equitable food system. Our target population encompasses urban residents, rural farmers, environmentally conscious consumers, and marginalized communities disproportionately affected by food insecurity and environmental degradation.
Urban residents, especially those residing in densely populated areas, often face limited access to fresh, locally sourced produce. Many urbanites rely heavily on supermarkets and grocery stores that predominantly offer mass-produced, industrially farmed products, often sourced from distant locations. This reliance contributes to the carbon footprint associated with food transportation and diminishes the quality and nutritional value of the food available to them.
On the other hand, small-scale farmers, particularly those practicing sustainable and organic farming methods, often struggle to compete with large agribusinesses. Limited access to markets, fluctuating prices, and challenges in reaching consumers directly impede their ability to thrive economically while maintaining environmentally friendly practices. Additionally, marginalized communities, including low-income urban neighborhoods and rural areas, often lack access to affordable, nutritious food options, perpetuating cycles of food insecurity and poor health outcomes.
VeggyBud addresses these challenges by providing a platform that directly connects consumers with local farmers and producers, bridging the gap between urban demand and rural supply. Through our app, urban residents gain access to a diverse range of fresh, sustainably produced foods sourced from nearby farms and gardens. By facilitating direct transactions between consumers and producers, VeggyBud empowers consumers to make informed choices about their food purchases while supporting local farmers and reducing the environmental impact associated with long-distance food transportation.
For small-scale farmers, VeggyBud offers a valuable opportunity to reach a broader customer base and receive fair compensation for their products. As the sole team member of VeggyBud, my journey towards creating this solution is deeply rooted in my personal experiences and aspirations. As a 17-year-old high school student from Belgium, my initial dream of becoming a farmer was fueled by a passion for agriculture and a desire to work closely with the land. However, it was a transformative experience during a family vacation to Tanzania that profoundly shaped my vision for VeggyBud.
Witnessing the poverty and environmental challenges faced by local communities in Tanzania deeply affected me. Already knowledgeable about climate change and its impacts, I realized the urgent need to address the unsustainable practices within the agricultural sector, both for the planet and for the well-being of people around the world.
Combining my childhood dream of farming with a newfound commitment to social and environmental justice, I embarked on the journey of creating VeggyBud. Drawing upon my own experiences as a farmer at heart and my understanding of climate change and its implications, I set out to design a solution that would revolutionize farming practices and promote sustainable food systems.
Despite my youth and limited resources, I am driven by a sense of purpose and determination to make a meaningful impact. While I may not have formal academic or professional credentials, my proximity to the communities I aim to serve gives me a unique perspective and insight into their needs and aspirations. My age and background also bring a fresh perspective to the table, challenging conventional norms and inspiring innovative solutions.

VeggyBud is in the Concept stage. While the idea has been conceptualized and there is a clear vision for the solution, no functioning prototype or product has been developed yet. As a high school student with a passion for addressing sustainability issues in agriculture, I have conducted preliminary research and planning for VeggyBud but have not yet built or tested any tangible components of the solution.
To date, I have focused on conducting market research, gathering feedback from potential users and stakeholders, and refining the concept of VeggyBud based on this input. While there may be interest and enthusiasm for the idea within my community and among peers, VeggyBud has not yet served any customers or beneficiaries in a tangible way.
Moving forward, I am committed to further developing VeggyBud into a functional prototype and piloting the solution to test its feasibility and impact. However, at this stage, VeggyBud remains a concept awaiting further development and implementation.
Ever since I was a toddler, I've been passionate about inventing. I consider myself a problem solver, driven by a desire to contribute positively to society, the world and its people. This is why topics such as climate change, the cities of the future, plastic pollution, algae, hyperloop, and more fascinate me deeply. However, due to my age, it's challenging to garner belief in my ideas, let alone find collaborators.
Inventing has always felt natural to me; the solutions simply materialize in my mind. It's not just work; it's an obsession to explore these solutions.
