Microbiology DX reports provide the basis of medical treatment. If a location has testing on a sample, microbiology report is standardized, complete with inclusion of reference ranges. However, if a sample is taken for analysis, the resulting report is not standardized. The format of the report and what information is included in that report is dependent on the facility, the region and nature of the practice, the training of the facility in a given practice setting and the memory cells of the user responsible for that report.
Currently for most LIS systems, construction of templates is unordered as to content. Most are retrieved by a name given to it by the individual constructing the template. Thus templates from different services, different diagnoses can be mixed, making expedient and accurate retrieval is difficult. A system using a menu based decision tree for creating, naming and retrieval of templates would greatly enhance completeness, accuracy and timeliness of reports, could also be used for case retrieval for QA and research purposes.

Microbiologists are being asked to test samples for numerous new predictive markers. This list grows daily and, in some instances, modifies the use of prior markers of behavior. Present LIS do not have the capacity to remind microbiologists to perform these tests. The delay and/or omission can delay appropriate treatment and ultimately cost lives.
