Sisterhood Summit
The specific problem Sisterhood Summit aims to solve is the lack of access to comprehensive sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) education and advocacy platforms, particularly for young women in Tanzania and globally.
Globally, there are significant barriers to SRHR education and services. According to the World Health Organization, 214 million women of reproductive age in developing regions have an unmet need for modern contraception. This results in approximately 74 million unintended pregnancies and 36 million abortions each year, many of which are unsafe. The lack of access to SRHR information and services disproportionately affects young women, who may face additional barriers such as stigma, discrimination, and gender-based violence.
In Tanzania, young women face specific challenges in accessing SRHR education and services. According to UNFPA, only 15% of women aged 15-19 in Tanzania have comprehensive knowledge about HIV prevention. Moreover, Tanzania has a high teenage pregnancy rate, with 27% of girls aged 15-19 either pregnant or already mothers. These statistics highlight the urgent need for SRHR education and advocacy platforms targeted at young women.
Sisterhood Summit addresses these problems by providing a space for young women to access SRHR education and advocacy platforms. Our conferences are led by young women, for young women, and focus on fostering a community of informed and active advocates for women's health rights. By empowering young women with the knowledge and tools they need to advocate for their SRHR, we hope to contribute to a global movement that breaks down barriers to SRHR education and services and promotes the health and well-being of young women everywhere.
Sisterhood Summit is a conference series led by young women, for young women, that focuses on sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) education and advocacy. Our solution provides a platform for young women to come together, share their experiences, learn from each other, and build a community of informed advocates for women’s health rights.
At each conference, we cover a range of topics related to SRHR, such as contraception, safe sex practices, gender-based violence, and advocacy skills. We bring in expert speakers and facilitators to lead workshops and sessions, ensuring that the information provided is accurate, reliable, and relevant to the needs and experiences of young women.
In addition to the educational component, we also incorporate interactive elements, such as panel discussions, Q&A sessions, and group activities, to foster a sense of community and solidarity among the participants. Our conferences are designed to be safe and inclusive spaces where young women feel comfortable sharing their experiences and learning from each other.
To date, we have conducted six conferences in Tanzania, reaching approximately 7,000 young girls. The feedback from participants has been overwhelmingly positive, with many expressing that they feel more informed and empowered to make decisions about their SRHR.
In the future, we aim to scale our solution to reach more young women, both in Tanzania and globally. We also plan to leverage technology, such as virtual conferences and online resources, to increase our reach and impact.
Our solution serves young women, particularly those in Tanzania and potentially globally, who may lack access to accurate and comprehensive sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) education. These young women often face multiple barriers to accessing this vital information, such as cultural stigma, lack of resources, and limited educational opportunities.
The young women we aim to serve often lack the knowledge and tools they need to make informed decisions about their SRHR. This can lead to a range of negative outcomes, including unintended pregnancies, sexually transmitted infections, and gender-based violence. Additionally, young women may not be aware of their rights when it comes to their SRHR, leaving them vulnerable to discrimination and abuse.
Our solution addresses these needs by providing young women with the information, skills, and community support they need to take control of their SRHR. Through our conferences, we create a safe and inclusive space where young women can learn about topics such as contraception, safe sex practices, and advocacy skills. We also provide a platform for young women to share their experiences and learn from each other, fostering a sense of community and solidarity.
By empowering young women with knowledge and skills related to SRHR, our solution has the potential to significantly improve their lives. With accurate information and a supportive community, young women are better equipped to make informed decisions about their health and advocate for their rights. This can lead to improved health outcomes, increased self-confidence, and a greater sense of agency.
In addition to the direct impact on young women, our solution also has the potential to create positive ripple effects in their communities and society at large. As young women become more informed and empowered, they are more likely to advocate for positive change in their communities, such as improved access to SRHR education and services. This can contribute to a more equitable and just society where the rights and needs of young women are respected and upheld.
Our team is well-positioned to deliver this solution because we are deeply embedded in the communities we serve. Our Team Lead has personal and professional connections to the young women in Tanzania who are the target population for our conferences. This proximity gives us unique insights into the specific challenges and needs of these young women, as well as the cultural and social contexts in which they live.
In addition to our Team Lead, our team is comprised of individuals who are representative of the communities we aim to serve. Our team members bring diverse perspectives and experiences that enrich our understanding of the issue and enhance our ability to develop culturally relevant and impactful solutions.
We are committed to a participatory approach that involves the communities we serve in every step of the solution development process. We engage with young women and other stakeholders through consultations, surveys, and focus group discussions to gather input and feedback on our conferences. This ensures that our solution is informed by the lived experiences and needs of the young women we aim to serve.
Our solution is guided by the input, ideas, and agendas of the communities we serve. We actively seek out the perspectives and voices of young women and incorporate their feedback into the design and implementation of our conferences. This co-design process ensures that our solution is tailored to the specific needs of the target population and is more likely to have a meaningful impact on their lives.

Our solution, Sisterhood Summit, has successfully conducted six conferences in Tanzania, reaching approximately 7,000 young girls. These conferences have been instrumental in providing education and advocacy on sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) to a significant number of young girls in the community.
The conferences serve as a platform for open dialogue, knowledge sharing, and empowerment, enabling these young girls to make informed decisions about their sexual and reproductive health. In addition to the direct impact on the participants, the ripple effect of the knowledge and empowerment gained during the conferences extends to their peers and communities, further amplifying the impact of our solution.
Sisterhood Summit takes an innovative approach to addressing sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) education and advocacy by placing young women at the forefront of the conversation. This youth-led model is a significant departure from traditional conferences and workshops, which are often organized by older generations and may not fully resonate with the needs and experiences of young women.
Our innovative approach is based on the principle of "for us, by us," ensuring that the content, format, and messaging of our conferences are directly informed by the perspectives and needs of young women. This not only makes our conferences more relevant and impactful for our target audience, but it also empowers young women by giving them a platform to share their experiences, learn from each other, and build a community of support.
Furthermore, our conferences are not just about imparting knowledge, but also about fostering a sense of agency and advocacy among young women. We incorporate interactive elements, such as workshops and panel discussions, that encourage active participation and critical thinking. This helps to build the confidence and skills of young women to become advocates for their own health and rights, as well as for the health and rights of their peers.
Another innovative aspect of our solution is our focus on community-based outreach and engagement. We recognize that access to SRHR information and services can be limited in rural and underserved communities, which is why we prioritize reaching young women in these areas. Our team works closely with local partners and community leaders to ensure that our conferences are accessible and relevant to young women from all walks of life.
In terms of broader positive impacts, Sisterhood Summit has the potential to catalyze a shift in the way SRHR education and advocacy is approached. By demonstrating the effectiveness of a youth-led model, we hope to inspire other organizations and stakeholders in this space to similarly prioritize the voices and leadership of young women. This could lead to more innovative and impactful solutions that are truly responsive to the needs of young women, ultimately improving SRHR outcomes for this population.
Sisterhood Summit represents a new and innovative approach to SRHR education and advocacy, one that is rooted in the principles of youth-led, community-based, and participatory engagement. By placing young women at the center of the conversation, we are not only addressing their SRHR needs in a more effective and relevant way, but we are also empowering them to become advocates for change in their own communities and beyond.
Our impact goals for the next year are:
1. Reach and educate 11,000 young women in Tanzania on SRHR through our conferences.
2. Establish partnerships with 5 local organizations to extend the reach and impact of our conferences.

- Build a network of local organizations and community leaders in East Africa who are committed to improving SRHR outcomes for young women.
- Develop and distribute educational materials in multiple languages to reach a wider audience of young women in rural areas of East Africa.
Our impact goals are aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Goal 3 (Good Health and Well-being), Goal 4 (Quality Education), and Goal 5 (Gender Equality). Our conferences and educational materials contribute to the achievement of these goals by improving access to SRHR information and services, promoting gender equality, and empowering young women to take control of their health and rights.
