Mama's Future Aid
The specific problem we aim to solve within the Challenge, particularly in Kilimanjaro, Tanzania, is the limited access to accurate sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) information, commodities, and services for young people, especially adolescent girls and young women, in Low- and Middle-Income Countries (LMICs). This issue is of significant scale in Kilimanjaro and has broader global implications.
In Kilimanjaro, the following statistics highlight the scale of the problem:
Limited Comprehensive Sexuality Education (CSE): In Tanzania, as of my last knowledge update in September 2021, only 35.5% of young women and 43.3% of young men between the ages of 15 and 24 had comprehensive knowledge of HIV prevention. This suggests a gap in comprehensive sexuality education, which is essential for informed choices related to sexual and reproductive health.
Economic Barriers: Approximately 28.2% of Tanzanian individuals live below the national poverty line. This economic disparity can significantly affect young people's ability to access essential SRHR commodities, such as contraceptives and menstrual hygiene products.
Transportation Barriers: Kilimanjaro has a mix of urban and rural areas, and access to transportation may be limited in certain regions. This can create challenges for young people in rural areas to access SRHR services and commodities.
Societal Taboos and Stigmatization: In conservative regions like Kilimanjaro, societal taboos and stigmatization around SRHR topics can discourage young people from seeking essential care. As of my last knowledge update, Tanzania had a 14% prevalence of HIV-related stigma, which can affect individuals' willingness to access HIV and SRHR services.
Globally, this problem has vast implications:
Scale of the Young Population: According to the United Nations, there are approximately 1.8 billion young people aged 10 to 24 globally. A substantial proportion of these individuals resides in LMICs, including Tanzania, and faces challenges related to SRHR.
Global Impact of Limited SRHR Access: Globally, it is estimated that over 214 million women who want to avoid pregnancy are not using modern contraception. The lack of access to SRHR services contributes to unplanned pregnancies, high maternal mortality, and the transmission of sexually transmitted infections, impacting the well-being and future prospects of young individuals.
Our solution, "Mama's Future Aid," addresses these issues by establishing comprehensive SRHR information hubs, ensuring affordable and accessible SRHR commodities, and providing youth-centric services. By empowering young innovators and change-makers, we aim to break down traditional barriers, promote informed choices, and contribute to the well-being and economic development of young individuals in Kilimanjaro and other regions of Tanzania.
Through collaborative efforts with UNFPA, Organon, and MIT Solve, we seek to be part of the solution to this pressing challenge, helping young people shape their own health trajectories and communities, both locally in Kilimanjaro and globally.

We create a network of young champions who actively participate in shaping the SRHR landscape in their communities.
How It Works:
Comprehensive SRHR Information Hubs are set up in easily accessible locations across Kilimanjaro. These hubs provide educational materials, workshops, and counseling to educate young individuals about SRHR.
Through partnerships with local healthcare providers, Mama's Future Aid ensures that SRHR commodities are available at affordable prices, encouraging regular and responsible use.
Youth-Centric SRHR Services create a welcoming and confidential atmosphere in clinics and healthcare facilities, making it easier for young people to access necessary healthcare without fear of judgment or stigma.
Empowering Young Innovators involves training and mentorship programs that build the capacity of young individuals to take the lead in advocating for SRHR improvements in Kilimanjaro.
Mama's Future Aid combines community engagement and technology, utilizing various media, including mobile apps and websites, to disseminate information and connect young people with resources.

Through collaborative efforts with UNFPA, Organon, and MIT Solve, we aim to make a tangible impact on the lives of young individuals in Kilimanjaro and beyond.
Our solution, Mama's Future Aid, primarily serves young people in Kilimanjaro, Tanzania, with a particular emphasis on adolescent girls and young women. This demographic is at the heart of our mission due to the unique challenges they face in accessing accurate sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) information, commodities, and services.
Target Population:
Adolescent Girls and Young Women (AGYW): This group, aged between 10 and 24, forms the core of our focus. AGYW in Kilimanjaro often lack comprehensive sexuality education, face economic barriers, and encounter transportation challenges that hinder their access to SRHR resources. Societal taboos and gender inequalities further exacerbate their struggles in making informed choices about their sexual and reproductive health.
Current Underservice:
The young people in Kilimanjaro, especially AGYW, face significant gaps in SRHR services and information. Comprehensive sexuality education may be limited, if available at all. Economic disparities often prevent them from affording essential SRHR commodities, leading to higher rates of unplanned pregnancies. Transportation challenges, particularly in rural areas, can impede their ability to access necessary healthcare services.
Solution's Impact:
Access to Accurate SRHR Information: Mama's Future Aid establishes information hubs equipped with age-appropriate, culturally sensitive, and evidence-based SRHR education. This empowers young individuals to make informed decisions about their reproductive health and well-being, reducing the risk of unplanned pregnancies and sexually transmitted infections.
Affordable SRHR Commodities: Through partnerships with local healthcare providers, our program ensures that essential SRHR commodities are available at affordable prices. This addresses economic barriers, allowing young people to access contraceptives and other vital resources without financial strain.
Youth-Centric SRHR Services: We create safe, confidential spaces in healthcare facilities, where privacy and dignity are prioritized. This directly addresses the current underservice by providing young individuals, especially AGYW, with access to essential healthcare services tailored to their unique needs.
Empowered Young Innovators: Mama's Future Aid empowers young individuals through training and mentorship programs. This enables them to take an active role in advocating for SRHR improvements in their communities. By providing them with the skills and resources needed, we empower them to be leaders of change.
By targeting AGYW in Kilimanjaro, Mama's Future Aid directly addresses the current gaps in SRHR services and information. Through education, affordability, accessibility, and empowerment, our solution strives to create a positive impact on the lives of young people in Kilimanjaro. We believe that informed and empowered youth contribute not only to their personal well-being but also to the social and economic development of their communities. This, in turn, creates a ripple effect of positive change for the region as a whole.

This aligns with a new business model that prioritizes cost-effective access, reducing economic barriers. By actively engaging local providers, we catalyze a positive impact on the market by demonstrating the value of making SRHR resources affordable and accessible.
Youth-Centric SRHR Services: We establish youth-friendly spaces in healthcare facilities, where privacy, confidentiality, and judgment-free care are central. This approach leverages existing infrastructure but adapts it to the specific needs of young people. This innovative model of care ensures that young individuals feel comfortable accessing services, thus improving their SRHR outcomes.
Empowering Young Innovators: We are pioneering a model that empowers young innovators and change-makers in Kilimanjaro. By providing training, mentorship, and resources, we foster a new generation of advocates for SRHR. This approach is innovative in its focus on capacity-building and engaging young individuals as active agents of change.
