PenPower
The problem we are addressing lies at the intersection of the lack of sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) education and the limited platforms for young girls to freely express and understand their experiences and thoughts around SRHR. This lack of education and self-expression exacerbates the vulnerability of young girls, especially in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) like Tanzania and globally, leaving them unempowered to make informed decisions about their bodies and futures.
Globally, around 12 million girls aged 15-19 years and at least 777,000 girls under 15 years give birth each year in developing regions (World Health Organization, 2020). A significant portion of these pregnancies are unintended, resulting from a lack of access to contraceptives and comprehensive sexuality education.
In Tanzania, the adolescent birth rate stands at 116 per 1000 girls aged 15-19, higher than the global average (UNICEF). Additionally, child marriage remains a prevalent issue in Tanzania, with 31% of girls married before the age of 18 (UNICEF). These practices not only deprive young girls of their childhood but also limit their access to education and economic opportunities, further perpetuating the cycle of poverty and gender inequality.
The factors contributing to this problem include inadequate healthcare infrastructure, cultural norms and stigmatization, economic disparities, and limited access to comprehensive sexuality education. In Tanzania, socio-cultural norms and taboos surrounding sexual health often prevent open discussions, thereby limiting young girls' access to accurate SRHR information. Moreover, the COVID-19 pandemic has further highlighted and exacerbated these challenges, with lockdown measures leading to disruptions in education and healthcare services, including SRHR services.
Our solution, PenPower, addresses these challenges by offering creative writing workshops as a platform for young girls to openly discuss and understand SRHR issues. The workshops aim to provide a safe and supportive environment where girls can freely express their thoughts and experiences, thereby enhancing their knowledge and understanding of SRHR. Furthermore, by promoting self-expression and storytelling, we aim to challenge and change the socio-cultural norms that often hinder open discussions around SRHR.
By targeting young girls in Tanzania and eventually scaling to other LMICs, PenPower aims to empower girls to take control of their SRHR and, ultimately, their futures. We believe that by fostering a supportive community that encourages open discussions and self-expression, we can contribute to breaking the silence around SRHR issues and, in turn, help to improve the overall sexual and reproductive health outcomes for young girls globally.
PenPower is a unique and innovative solution that leverages the power of creative writing to empower young girls to openly discuss and understand sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) issues. Our program provides creative writing workshops that serve as a safe and supportive platform for girls aged 15-25 to express their thoughts and experiences surrounding SRHR.
Our workshops are conducted by experienced facilitators who guide the participants in exploring different forms of creative writing, such as poetry and short stories. These workshops are designed to be interactive and engaging, providing the girls with the necessary tools and knowledge to articulate their thoughts and experiences effectively. By doing so, we aim to foster a sense of self-confidence and empowerment among the participants, enabling them to take control of their SRHR.
Since its inception in January 2023, PenPower has successfully engaged with 21 young girls, facilitating their journey to produce a diverse range of written materials. These include 93 pieces of SRHR-related poetry and other documents that capture their insights, experiences, and perspectives on SRHR issues. These written works serve as powerful testimonies that not only reflect the individual experiences of the girls but also highlight the common challenges and barriers faced by young girls in accessing accurate SRHR information and services.
One of the unique aspects of PenPower is that it does not rely on any complex technology. Instead, it harnesses the timeless power of storytelling and written expression, tools that have been used for centuries to share knowledge, challenge norms, and inspire change. Our approach is rooted in the belief that storytelling is a universal language that transcends cultural and geographical boundaries, making it an effective medium for fostering open discussions and challenging societal norms surrounding SRHR.
The written materials produced by the participants are also used as advocacy tools to raise awareness and challenge the socio-cultural norms and taboos that often hinder open discussions around SRHR. By sharing these stories, we aim to create a ripple effect that will not only empower other young girls but also contribute to changing societal attitudes and behaviors towards SRHR.
Our solution, PenPower, primarily serves young girls aged 15-25 in Tanzania, with the aim of scaling up to reach girls globally. This demographic often faces significant barriers when it comes to accessing accurate and comprehensive sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) information and services. These barriers can include cultural and religious taboos, lack of education, and limited access to health services. As a result, many young girls are left with unanswered questions and misconceptions about their bodies and SRHR.
The PenPower creative writing workshops are specifically designed to address these needs by providing a safe and supportive platform where young girls can openly discuss and explore SRHR issues. Through the workshops, participants are empowered with the knowledge and skills necessary to understand and articulate their experiences, thoughts, and feelings surrounding SRHR. This, in turn, fosters a sense of self-confidence and agency among the girls, enabling them to make informed decisions about their bodies and health.
The impact of PenPower on the lives of the young girls we serve is multifaceted. Firstly, by providing a space where they can freely express themselves, we are helping to break the silence and stigma surrounding SRHR. This is crucial in challenging and changing the socio-cultural norms and taboos that often hinder open discussions about SRHR.
Secondly, the written materials produced by the participants serve as powerful testimonies that highlight the common challenges and barriers faced by young girls in accessing SRHR information and services. These stories can be used as advocacy tools to raise awareness and foster a sense of solidarity among young girls facing similar challenges.
The skills gained through the workshops are not just limited to SRHR; they are transferable skills that can be applied in other areas of the girls’ lives. For example, the ability to articulate thoughts and feelings effectively is a valuable skill that can be used in educational and professional settings.
Angela, our team lead, grew up in a small village in Tanzania, where she witnessed firsthand the challenges young girls face in accessing accurate and comprehensive sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) information and services. This personal experience has deeply informed and motivated her work with PenPower, and she brings a unique and valuable perspective to our team.
As a native Tanzanian, Angela has an intimate understanding of the cultural and societal norms that often hinder open discussions about SRHR in the communities we serve. This insider perspective is crucial in designing workshops and materials that are culturally sensitive and relevant to the needs of young girls in Tanzania.
Angela's personal story serves as a powerful testament to the potential impact of our solution. She is a living example of how education and empowerment can transform a young girl's life, giving her the confidence and agency to make informed decisions about her body and health.
The rest of our team is equally committed to our mission and brings a diverse range of skills and experiences to the table. We have educators, health professionals, and creative writing experts, all of whom are dedicated to creating a safe and supportive environment for young girls to explore and express their thoughts and experiences with SRHR.
To ensure that our solution is meaningfully guided by the communities we serve, we have implemented a participatory design approach, where young girls are actively involved in the development and implementation of our workshops. We regularly hold focus group discussions and individual interviews with the participants to gather their feedback and insights, which are then used to inform the content and structure of our workshops.
We have established a Youth Advisory Board, comprised of young girls from the communities we serve, to provide ongoing input and guidance on our programs. This ensures that our solution is not only informed by the needs and aspirations of young girls but also meaningfully guided by their ideas and agendas.

Since we started in January 2023, PenPower has reached and actively engaged 21 young girls aged 15-25 in our creative writing workshops. These workshops have provided a platform for these young girls to express their thoughts and experiences with SRHR through creative writing, such as poetry and short stories.
While the primary direct beneficiaries of our program are the 21 girls who have participated in our workshops, the impact of our solution extends beyond this group. The written works produced by these girls have been shared within their communities, reaching an estimated audience of around 200 people. This sharing of personal stories and experiences helps to break down the stigma surrounding SRHR and fosters a sense of community and support.
In addition to the direct impact on the participants and their communities, our solution also contributes to the global conversation around SRHR. The stories and poems created by the girls are shared on our online platforms, reaching an international audience and adding valuable perspectives to the discourse on SRHR.
In total, we estimate that our solution has reached approximately 400 people, including workshop participants, their communities, and our online audience. This number is expected to grow as we continue to develop and expand our program.
PenPower is innovative in its approach to addressing the sexual and reproductive health rights (SRHR) of young girls and women through creative writing workshops. Our solution combines the power of storytelling with education, creating a unique platform for young girls to express their thoughts and experiences with SRHR.
The innovative aspect of our solution lies in its utilization of creative writing as a medium for SRHR education and advocacy. By engaging young girls in poetry and short story writing, we are providing them with a safe and empowering space to voice their opinions and share their stories. This creative process not only helps in building their confidence but also enhances their understanding of SRHR issues, thereby promoting positive behavioral changes.
Our solution also stands out because it is specifically designed to be culturally sensitive and relevant to the communities we serve. We understand that SRHR is a sensitive and often taboo topic in many cultures, including Tanzania. By using creative writing, we are able to break down these barriers and create a more approachable and relatable way for young girls to learn about and discuss SRHR.
Our workshops are facilitated by trained young women from the community who can relate to the experiences and challenges faced by the participants. This peer-to-peer approach adds another layer of innovation to our solution, as it fosters a sense of solidarity and support among the young girls, further enhancing the impact of our program.
The potential for broader positive impacts from our solution is significant. PenPower can serve as a model for other organizations and initiatives aiming to address SRHR or other social issues faced by young girls and women. Our creative writing workshops can be adapted and replicated in different cultural and social contexts, providing a versatile and effective tool for change.
In terms of changing the market, our solution opens up new opportunities for young girls and women to develop their writing and storytelling skills, thereby contributing to the growing market of content creators and writers. The stories and poems produced in our workshops can be compiled and published, providing a platform for these young girls to have their voices heard and their experiences shared on a larger scale.

Our journey began in December 2022, marking the inception of our solution. Since then, we have devotedly worked for approximately ten months, laying the groundwork and actively implementing our creative writing workshops. During this period, we have engaged with young girls in our community, refining our approach based on their needs and feedback. The evolution of our solution is a testament to our commitment to addressing the SRHR needs of young girls and empowering them through the power of creative writing and self-expression.
At PenPower, our commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusivity is both intrinsic and strategic. We believe that to create impactful solutions for a diverse group of young girls, our approach and operations must be reflective of the same principles.
Diversity in Leadership and Teams: Our founder, Angela, is not just an entrepreneur but a representation of the young girls we aim to serve. Her personal story, intertwined with the realities of many girls we target, gives our mission authenticity and purpose. The team at PenPower consists of individuals from varied cultural, socio-economic, and educational backgrounds, ensuring diverse perspectives guide our operations.
Equitable Opportunities: Recognizing that equity goes beyond mere representation, we have instituted measures to ensure that every young girl, regardless of her socio-economic background, can access our workshops. We provide scholarships and support mechanisms to ensure that financial constraints are not barriers to participation.
Inclusivity in Program Design: Our creative writing workshops are designed to cater to the varied needs of young girls. We’ve made them adaptable, considering different levels of literacy, cultural backgrounds, and personal experiences. Feedback sessions are an integral part of our curriculum, allowing participants to voice their opinions, ensuring the environment is inclusive and continually evolving.
Ongoing Training: Our team undergoes regular training on diversity, equity, and inclusivity, ensuring that these principles are not just theoretical but are lived every day. This training helps our team members understand unconscious biases, societal structures, and ways to create a more inclusive environment.
Community Engagement: We recognize the value of community in fostering inclusivity. Hence, we have community engagement programs where we work with parents, local leaders, and institutions to understand the unique needs of every community and tailor our programs accordingly.
Feedback Mechanism: We have established a robust feedback mechanism wherein our participants, their families, and our community partners can voice their concerns, suggestions, or feedback. This system ensures that we remain accountable to our stakeholders and can adapt our approach based on genuine needs and concerns.
Incorporating diversity, equity, and inclusivity is not a one-time initiative for us; it's a continuous journey. We actively seek partnerships, knowledge, and resources to enhance our commitment to these principles. We believe that our dedication to these ideals not only enhances our efficacy but also resonates deeply with the spirit of our mission – empowering every young girl to find her voice and express herself confidently.
