Animation For Health
Sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) education is crucial for young woman to make informed decisions about their bodies and lives. However, there is a significant lack of access to accurate and culturally relevant SRHR information worldwide, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. Globally, an estimated 1.8 billion young people aged 10-24 lack access to comprehensive sexuality education (CSE) (UNESCO, 2021). This lack of access is more pronounced in sub-Saharan Africa, where only 10% of young men and 15% of young women aged 15-24 have comprehensive knowledge of HIV prevention (UNAIDS, 2020).
In Tanzania, where our project is based, the situation is equally dire. Only 27% of young women and 36% of young men aged 15-24 have comprehensive knowledge of HIV/AIDS, according to the Tanzania Demographic and Health Survey 2015-16. Additionally, teenage pregnancy rates are high, with 27% of girls aged 15-19 having begun childbearing. This can have severe consequences for their health, education, and future opportunities.
The main factors contributing to this problem include:
Limited access to accurate and relevant SRHR information: In many communities, there is a lack of accessible information on SRHR that is relevant to young people's needs and contexts.
Stigma and cultural taboos: Cultural norms and taboos often prevent young people from seeking SRHR information and services.
Language barriers: In multilingual countries like Tanzania, where over 120 languages are spoken, information is often not available in local languages, making it inaccessible to many young people.
Inadequate education systems: Many schools lack comprehensive sexuality education, and teachers are often not adequately trained to provide this information.
Our solution, Animation For Health, aims to address these issues by producing localized animation videos in various languages that are culturally relevant and accessible to young people. These videos will provide accurate and essential information on SRHR, breaking down language barriers, and challenging cultural taboos and stigma. Through this innovative approach, we aim to reach millions of young people in Tanzania and worldwide, empowering them with the knowledge they need to make informed decisions about their sexual and reproductive health and rights.

Our solution, Animation For Health, creates and disseminates localized animation videos that educate young woman on sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) in their own languages and cultural contexts. The animations are designed to be engaging and informative, breaking down complex SRHR topics into easy-to-understand content that resonates with young audiences.
The process works as follows:
Research & Script Writing: We conduct extensive research to understand the specific SRHR needs and challenges faced by young woman in a particular community. This includes consultations with community leaders, educators, and health professionals. Based on this research, we develop a script that is culturally sensitive and tailored to address the community's unique needs.
Animation Production: The script is then transformed into a visually appealing animation video. Our team of animators uses state-of-the-art animation software to create high-quality videos that are both educational and entertaining.
Localization: The animations are translated and dubbed into local languages to ensure they are accessible to a wider audience. We also make adaptations to the visual content to reflect the community's cultural norms and values.
Distribution & Outreach: The final step is to distribute the videos through various channels, such as social media, community events, schools, and healthcare facilities. We also collaborate with local NGOs, government bodies, and other stakeholders to amplify our reach.
Our technology stack includes animation software like Adobe After Effects, Toon Boom Harmony, and Blender. We also use video editing tools such as Adobe Premiere Pro and Final Cut Pro to ensure the final product is of the highest quality.
Currently, we are in the process of producing our first animation video, which is expected to be launched in early December 2023. This video will serve as a pilot project to test our solution and gather feedback from the community. Based on the learnings from this pilot, we will refine our approach and scale up our operations to reach more communities and impact more young lives positively.

Our solution primarily serves young people aged 10 to 24 in Tanzania and, eventually, globally, with a focus on providing comprehensive sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) education.
The target population often lacks access to accurate and culturally sensitive SRHR information due to various factors, including:
Cultural and Religious Barriers: In many communities, talking about sexual and reproductive health is considered taboo, and young people often receive inaccurate or incomplete information from peers or the internet.
Language Barriers: Information available is often not in the local languages, making it inaccessible to a significant portion of the population.
Geographical Barriers: Young people in remote areas may have limited access to health facilities and educational resources.
Educational Gaps: Schools may not provide comprehensive SRHR education, and teachers may not be adequately trained to handle these topics.
Our solution addresses these needs in the following ways:
Cultural Sensitivity: By involving community leaders and experts in the content creation process, we ensure that our animations are culturally sensitive and resonate with the target audience.
Localization: Translating and dubbing the animations into local languages breaks down language barriers and makes the content more accessible.
Engaging Content: Animations are a highly engaging medium that can capture the attention of young people and deliver complex information in a format that is easy to understand.
Wide Reach: Distributing the videos through various channels, including social media, schools, and healthcare facilities, ensures that we reach young people where they are.
By providing young people with accurate, culturally sensitive, and accessible SRHR information, we empower them to make informed decisions about their bodies and lives. This can lead to a range of positive outcomes, including improved health and wellbeing, increased school attendance and performance, and reduced rates of early pregnancies and sexually transmitted infections.
Our team is deeply connected to the communities we serve, with most members having grown up in Tanzania and experienced firsthand the challenges and gaps in sexual and reproductive health and rights education. Our team lead has a personal story that highlights the importance of our solution.
When she was a teenager, a close friend of hers became pregnant at the age of 15. This event had a profound impact on her friend's life, ultimately leading to her dropping out of school and facing numerous social and economic challenges. This experience highlighted the importance of comprehensive sexual and reproductive health education and ignited a passion in our team lead to make a difference.
Our team is representative of the communities we serve, not just in terms of geographical location, but also in terms of age, gender, and cultural background. This diversity allows us to bring a range of perspectives and experiences to the table, ensuring that our solution is relevant and resonant.
We are also actively engaged in understanding the needs of those we serve. Our team regularly conducts focus group discussions and surveys with young people, parents, teachers, and community leaders to gather insights and feedback on our content. We also work closely with local health experts and organizations to ensure that our information is accurate and evidence-based.
Our solution is designed to be flexible and adaptable, with input from the communities guiding the content and delivery of our animations. For example, we involve community leaders and cultural experts in the content creation process to ensure that our videos are culturally sensitive and resonate with the target audience. We also test our videos with small groups of young people before launching them widely to gather feedback and make any necessary adjustments.
- Prioritize infrastructure centered around young people to enhance young people’s access to SRH information, commodities and services.

As of now, our solution is still in the production stage, with our first animation video expected to launch by early December 2023. Therefore, we have not yet reached any individuals with our solution. However, we have set a target to reach at least 10,000 people following the launch of our first video.
Our distribution strategy includes sharing the video through various online platforms such as social media, YouTube, and partnering with organizations and schools to incorporate the video into educational programs and workshops. This wide-ranging approach aims to maximize our reach and impact, ensuring that as many young people as possible have access to our educational animation video on sexual and reproductive health and rights.
Our solution, Animation For Health, brings innovation to sexual and reproductive health education by utilizing localized animation videos to disseminate information in an engaging and culturally relevant manner. This approach is significantly different from traditional methods, such as pamphlets or in-person workshops, which may not be as accessible or engaging to young people.
The use of animation is a creative and innovative way to break down complex health topics into understandable and relatable content. By localizing the videos in local languages and contexts, we ensure that the information is culturally relevant and resonates with the target audience. This approach makes the education more inclusive and can help to overcome language and cultural barriers that often hinder effective SRHR education.
The innovation lies not only in the medium of delivery but also in the participatory approach we employ in the content creation process. We actively involve the communities we serve in the development of the animations, ensuring that their voices, experiences, and needs shape the content. This co-creation process ensures that the videos are not only informative but also reflective of the community's values and beliefs.
Our solution has the potential to catalyze broader positive impacts in the SRHR education space. The localized animation videos can serve as a model for other organizations and stakeholders working in the field of SRHR education. They can adopt and adapt our approach to create content that is relevant to their specific cultural and linguistic contexts. This innovation could potentially change the market by setting a new standard for SRHR education, where localized and culturally relevant content is prioritized.
Our solution leverages technology to make SRHR education more accessible. With the internet and social media, the animated videos can be easily disseminated to a wider audience, reaching young people in even the most remote areas. This increased accessibility could potentially lead to greater awareness and knowledge among young people regarding their sexual and reproductive health and rights.
