Rural Reach
Rural Reach is committed to solving the significant challenge of limited access to contraceptives in rural areas, a problem that affects millions of women globally and has profound implications for their sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR). The scale of this problem is massive, with over214 million women in developing countries who want to prevent pregnancy but are not using modern contraception. In Tanzania, for instance, 22% of married women have an unmet need for family planning, and the contraceptive prevalence rate is only 38%.
The factors contributing to this problem are numerous and complex. In rural areas, women often face significant barriers to accessing contraceptives, including long distances to health facilities, lack of transportation, and economic constraints. Cultural and religious beliefs, as well as stigma and lack of knowledge, further hinder access to contraceptives. The lack of healthcare infrastructure and trained healthcare providers in rural areas also plays a significant role in limiting access.
Our solution specifically addresses these factors by developing innovative delivery systems that bring contraceptives directly to women in rural areas, bypassing the need for them to travel long distances and navigate other barriers. Our approach takes into account the cultural and religious beliefs of the communities we serve, ensuring that our delivery systems are sensitive to and respectful of local norms and values.
By providing women in rural areas with easy access to contraceptives, Rural Reach aims to empower them to take control of their reproductive health and make informed choices about their bodies and their lives. Our solution has the potential to significantly impact the SRHR of women in rural areas, ultimately contributing to the achievement of Sustainable Development Goal 3.7, which calls for universal access to sexual and reproductive health-care services, including family planning.
Rural Reach is an innovative delivery system that brings contraceptives directly to women in rural areas, circumventing traditional barriers to access. Our solution leverages mobile technology and a network of community health workers to ensure that women in remote locations have easy access to a range of contraceptive options.
Here's how it works:
Mobile Technology: Rural women can access our platform through a simple mobile app or SMS service, where they can get information on different contraceptive options, ask questions, and place orders. The platform is designed to be user-friendly and accessible even for those with limited technological literacy.
Community Health Workers: We have trained a network of community health workers who are embedded in the communities we serve. These workers are responsible for delivering contraceptives to women's doorsteps, providing counseling and support, and collecting data on contraceptive use and SRHR outcomes.
Data Collection and Analysis: Our platform collects data on contraceptive use, health outcomes, and customer satisfaction. This data is analyzed to improve our services and to generate insights that can inform SRHR programs and policies.
In the Rural Tarime region of Tanzania, we have successfully served over 120 women, providing them with reliable access to contraceptives and empowering them to take control of their reproductive health. Our community health workers have played a crucial role in this success, providing personalized support to each woman and ensuring that they have the information and resources they need to make informed choices.
Through our innovative use of technology and community-based approach, Rural Reach is breaking down the barriers that prevent women in rural areas from accessing contraceptives. Our solution is scalable and adaptable, with the potential to be replicated in other rural areas around the world, significantly impacting the SRHR of women globally.
Rural Reach specifically serves women in rural areas who lack easy access to contraceptives and reproductive health services. These women are often underserved due to a variety of factors including geographical barriers, lack of transportation, cultural and social norms, and limited availability of health facilities and contraceptives. The challenge of accessing contraceptives is particularly pronounced in rural areas of developing countries like Tanzania.
In the Rural Tarime region of Tanzania, where we have initiated our services, women often have to travel long distances to reach the nearest health facility, which may not even have a reliable supply of contraceptives. This lack of access is a significant barrier to family planning and can result in unintended pregnancies, negatively affecting the health and well-being of women and their families.
Our solution directly addresses these challenges by bringing contraceptives to the doorsteps of women in rural areas. Here’s how Rural Reach impacts the lives of our target population:
Ease of Access: Through our mobile platform, women can easily access information on different contraceptive options and place orders without having to travel long distances.
Informed Choice: Our trained community health workers provide counseling and support, helping women to make informed choices about their reproductive health.
Confidentiality and Privacy: By delivering contraceptives directly to women’s homes, we ensure their privacy and confidentiality, which is often a concern in small rural communities.
Empowerment: By providing women with reliable access to contraceptives, we are empowering them to take control of their reproductive health and make decisions that are best for them and their families.
Positive Health Outcomes: Access to contraceptives has been proven to improve maternal and child health outcomes by preventing unintended pregnancies and reducing the risk of maternal mortality.
Rural Reach serves women in rural areas who are currently underserved and lack easy access to contraceptives and reproductive health services. Our innovative delivery system brings contraceptives directly to their doorsteps, providing them with easy access to a range of contraceptive options. Our community health workers provide personalized support and counseling, empowering women to make informed choices about their reproductive health. The impact of our solution is significant, with the potential to improve maternal and child health outcomes, and empower women to take control of their reproductive health.
Our team is deeply connected to the communities we are aiming to serve. I, as the Team Lead, have a personal connection to the problem at hand. Growing up in a rural area of Tanzania, I have witnessed firsthand the struggles that women face when trying to access contraceptives. The impact that this lack of access has on their lives is something that I have seen up close, and it is what drives my passion for this project. My upbringing in this environment has provided me with unique insights into the cultural and societal norms that can act as barriers to family planning in these communities.
The majority of our team members either come from rural areas or have spent considerable amounts of time working in these communities. This proximity to the people we are aiming to help means that we have a deep understanding of the intricacies of the problem. It also ensures that we are in a good position to design and deliver a solution that truly meets the needs of the people.
Our approach to developing our solution has been community-based from the start. We have spent countless hours in rural communities, engaging with women, community leaders, and healthcare providers to fully grasp the challenges they face and the barriers that exist in accessing contraceptives. This direct engagement with the community has been instrumental in shaping our solution.
To further strengthen our connection to the community, we have formed partnerships with local organizations and community health workers. These health workers are integral to our solution as they are from the communities they serve and are therefore trusted by the people. They act as a vital link between our team and the community, providing us with valuable insights and feedback that have been crucial in the development of our solution.
One of the key aspects of our solution is that it has been developed with active involvement from the communities we are serving. We have conducted pilot programs and gathered feedback from women who have used our service. This feedback has been invaluable in refining and improving our solution to ensure that it truly meets the needs of the women we are aiming to help.
Our team’s close ties to the communities we are serving, coupled with our community-based approach to solution development, puts us in a unique position to make a real difference. We have worked tirelessly to engage with the community, seeking their input and ideas to shape our solution. This, combined with our own personal connections to the problem, drives our commitment to positively impacting the lives of women in rural areas.

These women have received contraceptives through our innovative delivery system, which has been designed to overcome the geographical and societal barriers that often prevent women in rural areas from accessing contraceptive services.

Telehealth Services: Our telehealth platform allows women to consult with healthcare providers remotely, breaking down the barriers of distance and lack of transportation that often prevent women in rural areas from accessing healthcare services. This platform is also used to provide education and support to women, helping them to make informed decisions about their reproductive health.
Data Analytics: We utilize data analytics to track the impact of our services and to identify areas for improvement. This allows us to continuously refine and improve our approach, ensuring that we are meeting the needs of the women we serve.
Community Engagement and Education: We are committed to changing the narrative around contraceptive use in rural areas by engaging with communities and providing education on the importance of family planning and reproductive health. Our community engagement efforts are crucial in breaking down the cultural and societal barriers that often prevent women from accessing contraceptives.
Rural Reach's innovative approach to delivering contraceptives to women in rural areas has the potential to catalyze broader positive impacts in this space. By leveraging technology and community engagement, we are demonstrating a new way of providing healthcare services to underserved populations. Our solution could inspire others in the field to adopt similar approaches, ultimately leading to increased access to contraceptives and improved reproductive health outcomes for women in rural areas.
