Youth Innovation Labs
In Tanzania, like many low- and middle-income countries, young people face significant barriers to accessing sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) information, commodities, and services. This is a widespread issue that affects millions of young people both locally and globally.
One of the main challenges in Tanzania is the limited access to accurate and comprehensive SRHR information. According to the Tanzania 2011-2012 HIV/AIDs indicator survey, only 40% of young women and 50% of young men aged 15-24 have comprehensive knowledge about HIV/AIDS. This lack of knowledge is a significant barrier to young people's ability to make informed decisions about their sexual and reproductive health.
In addition to limited access to information, young people in Tanzania also face challenges in accessing SRHR commodities and services. The study also reports that only 32% of sexually active unmarried women aged 15-24 are using modern contraception. This low contraceptive prevalence rate is a result of multiple factors including lack of availability, affordability, and cultural norms and stigma surrounding contraceptive use.
Furthermore, the healthcare infrastructure in Tanzania is often inadequate to meet the needs of young people. There are often shortages of essential SRHR commodities, such as contraceptives and condoms, in healthcare facilities. Additionally, young people may face judgment or discrimination from healthcare providers, which can discourage them from seeking the care they need.
Youth Innovation Labs aims to address these challenges by providing a platform for young people to collaboratively develop and implement innovative solutions to improve access to SRHR information, commodities, and services in their communities. By empowering young people to be active agents of change, we hope to create a more inclusive and supportive environment for young people to access the SRHR care they need.
The scale of the problem is significant, with millions of young people in Tanzania and globally facing similar barriers to accessing SRHR care. Our solution has the potential to impact the lives of thousands of young people in Tanzania, and, if scaled, could benefit millions more around the world. By addressing the root causes of the problem, such as limited access to information and inadequate healthcare infrastructure, we hope to create lasting change that will improve the sexual and reproductive health and rights of young people for generations to come.
Youth Innovation Labs is a collaborative platform that brings together young people to co-create solutions for sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) challenges in their communities. Our solution is to engage and empower youth by providing them with the resources and support they need to innovate and take action on SRHR issues.
Here’s how it works:
Recruitment and Training: We recruit a diverse group of young innovators aged 15-25 from the local community. The innovators are then provided with training on SRHR topics, design thinking, and project management.
Idea Generation and Development: The young innovators work in teams to identify SRHR challenges in their community and develop innovative solutions to address these challenges. They are guided by mentors and have access to resources such as workshops and toolkits to help them develop their ideas.
Prototyping and Testing: The teams then create prototypes of their solutions and test them in the community to gather feedback and make improvements.
Implementation and Scale-Up: Successful solutions are then implemented in the community, with the potential for scale-up to other communities facing similar challenges.
One example of a solution that has come out of the Youth Innovation Labs is the development of reusable pads. The young innovators identified that many girls in their community miss school during their menstrual periods due to lack of access to sanitary pads. They developed a prototype of a reusable sanitary pad that is made from locally sourced materials, is cost-effective, and environmentally friendly. The reusable pads have been successfully tested in the community and are now being produced and distributed to girls in need.
In addition to the reusable pads and mobile app, our Youth Innovation Labs have spawned a plethora of innovative solutions tackling a range of sexual and reproductive health and rights challenges. For instance, we have a web platform that connects youth to local health services and professionals for reliable information and support.
Another team developed a chatbot that answers SRHR-related queries and provides anonymity to users seeking advice on sensitive topics. We also have an educational program that leverages virtual reality to teach comprehensive sexuality education in schools, breaking the barriers of traditional teaching methods. These innovations are testament to the creativity and capability of young people to address complex community challenges through technology-driven solutions when provided with the right resources and support
Our solution is technology-driven and leverages the power of digital tools to enhance the reach and impact of our interventions. The mobile app, for example, uses artificial intelligence to provide personalized SRHR information to users based on their needs and preferences.
Our solution primarily serves young people in communities where sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) education and services are limited or stigmatized. In many cases, these youths lack access to accurate information and resources to make informed decisions about their sexual and reproductive health. The stigma around discussing SRHR topics further exacerbates the issue, leaving young people vulnerable to health risks such as sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and unplanned pregnancies.
Our Youth Innovation Labs empower these young individuals by providing them with the tools and knowledge they need to address SRHR challenges in their communities. Through the Labs, youths collaborate and co-create solutions that are tailored to their local context, ensuring that the innovations are relevant and effective. For instance, the reusable pads project addresses the issue of period poverty, providing young girls with an affordable and sustainable alternative to traditional menstrual products. Similarly, the mobile app connects users to accurate SRHR information, breaking the barriers of stigma and misinformation.
Our solution fosters a sense of community and support among the youth. By working together in the Labs, young people can share their experiences and learn from each other, creating a supportive environment that can help them navigate the complexities of SRHR challenges. The innovative solutions developed in the Labs are also shared with the wider community, sparking conversations and challenging the stigma around SRHR topics.
Our team is composed of passionate and dedicated individuals who have a deep understanding and connection with the communities we serve. We believe that this proximity is crucial in designing and delivering a solution that truly meets the needs of young people in these communities.
The Team Lead (Grace Samson), who grew up in one of the communities we are serving, has first-hand experience of the challenges faced by young people when it comes to sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR). This personal experience has shaped our approach, ensuring that we are always guided by the needs and perspectives of the community.
To understand the needs of those we serve, we engage with the community through regular consultations and workshops. These interactions allow us to gather valuable insights and feedback that inform the design and implementation of our solution. We also involve young people in the co-creation process, ensuring that their voices are heard and that they have a direct role in shaping the solution.
Our commitment to community engagement is evident in the way we have designed our Youth Innovation Labs. The Labs are not just a space for young people to develop their ideas; they are also a platform for dialogue and collaboration. By bringing young people together, we are creating an environment where they can learn from each other, share their experiences, and support one another in addressing SRHR challenges.
One example of how our solution is guided by the community’s input and agendas is the reusable pads project. This initiative was developed in response to the feedback we received from young girls in the community who highlighted the need for affordable and sustainable menstrual products. Similarly, the mobile app that provides accurate SRHR information was developed based on the needs expressed by the community for reliable and accessible information.
- Strengthen the capacity and engagement of young innovators in the development, implementation and growth of solutions addressing their SRHR needs.

As of now, our Youth Innovation Labs have engaged 12 young innovators who are actively working on developing their ideas, including reusable pads, to address sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) challenges in their communities. These innovators are not only creating solutions but are also becoming ambassadors for SRHR in their communities. By the end of 2024, we anticipate that our labs will have supported around 100 young innovators, thereby amplifying the impact and reach of our solution.
Our solution, Youth Innovation Labs, approaches the problem of sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) challenges in a unique and significantly improved way by providing a collaborative space for young people to co-create solutions that are tailored to their communities' needs. This bottom-up approach ensures that the solutions are culturally relevant, accessible, and effective in addressing the specific SRHR challenges faced by the community.
Our model is innovative because it leverages the power of collaboration and co-creation, bringing together young innovators from diverse backgrounds to work together in developing solutions. This diversity of perspectives and experiences enriches the ideation process, leading to more comprehensive and effective solutions. The young innovators are not just passive recipients of knowledge or services; they are active participants and drivers of change, empowered to take control of their sexual and reproductive health and rights.
One of the innovations that has come out of our lab is the development of reusable pads. This is a significant improvement over disposable pads, which are not only costly but also contribute to environmental degradation. The reusable pads are affordable, eco-friendly, and culturally acceptable, making them an ideal solution for young women in our community.
Our solution has the potential to catalyze broader positive impacts by serving as a model for other communities facing similar SRHR challenges. The collaborative and co-creative approach can be adapted to different cultural and social contexts, ensuring that the solutions developed are relevant and effective in addressing the specific challenges faced by each community.
Also, our solution could change the market by introducing innovative and sustainable products like the reusable pads, which have the potential to disrupt the market dominated by disposable pads. The success of the reusable pads could encourage other innovators and companies to explore and develop more sustainable and affordable SRHR solutions, leading to a shift in the market towards more eco-friendly and culturally relevant products.
