StoryHub
In Tanzania, young people face significant challenges in accessing reliable and accurate information on sexual and reproductive health (SRH). This lack of information and education can lead to negative outcomes, such as unintended pregnancies, sexually transmitted infections (STIs), and unsafe abortions.
The scale of the problem is substantial. The adolescent birth rate in Tanzania is 151 per 1,000 girls aged 15-19, compared to the global average of 44 per 1,000. Additionally, 27% of girls in Tanzania are married before the age of 18, which can hinder their access to education and increase the risk of health complications related to pregnancy and childbirth. Furthermore, 65% of young women in Tanzania have an unmet need for modern contraception.
Globally, the issue remains critical, with an estimated 21 million girls aged 15-19 years becoming pregnant and approximately 12 million giving birth each year. Moreover, approximately 3,000 girls and women die daily due to complications related to pregnancy and childbirth.
The factors contributing to these issues include a lack of comprehensive sexuality education, cultural taboos surrounding discussions of sex and reproductive health, and limited access to SRH services. These factors are particularly pronounced in low- and middle-income countries like Tanzania, where healthcare infrastructure is often inadequate, and societal norms can be more conservative.
Thus, it's evident that the lack of accurate and reliable information on SRH is a significant global problem that needs urgent attention, particularly in countries like Tanzania, where the young population is disproportionately affected.

Our solution, StoryHub, is a crowdsourced storytelling platform that enables young people to share their experiences and stories related to sexual and reproductive health (SRH). The platform fosters a sense of community and support, empowering users to make informed decisions about their SRH.
StoryHub works as follows:
User Submission: Users can submit their stories and experiences related to SRH through the platform. These stories can be anonymous, allowing users to share their experiences without fear of stigma or judgment.
Community Engagement: Once a story is shared, other users can engage with the content by leaving comments, sharing their own experiences, or offering support and advice. This fosters a sense of community and support among users.
Resource Center: In addition to user-generated content, StoryHub will also provide accurate and reliable information on SRH. This information will be sourced from credible organizations and experts in the field.
Moderation and Safety: The platform will have strict moderation policies to ensure that the content shared is respectful, supportive, and informative. Any content that violates these guidelines will be removed.
Technology: StoryHub will leverage cutting-edge technology to provide a seamless user experience. The platform will be accessible via web and mobile devices, ensuring that users can access the content from anywhere in the world.
During the development of StoryHub, we conducted interviews with 100 young people, and the overwhelming response was that they are willing to share their stories and learn from the experiences of others. This indicates a strong demand for a platform like StoryHub, where young people can connect, share, and learn from each other in a supportive and non-judgmental environment.
Our solution, StoryHub, serves young people, particularly those aged 15-35, who are seeking information and community support around sexual and reproductive health (SRH). This group is often underserved in terms of access to accurate and reliable information on SRH, as well as in terms of platforms that provide a safe and supportive space to discuss these topics.
In many communities, including those in Tanzania, discussions around SRH can be taboo, leading to a lack of reliable information and support. This can result in young people making uninformed decisions about their SRH, which can have serious consequences for their health and wellbeing. Furthermore, the lack of a supportive community can lead to feelings of isolation and shame, particularly for those who have experienced sexual violence or other traumatic events related to SRH.
StoryHub addresses these needs in several ways:
Access to Information: By providing a resource center with accurate and reliable information on SRH, StoryHub ensures that users have access to the information they need to make informed decisions about their health.
Community Support: Through the user-generated content and community engagement features, StoryHub provides a supportive community where users can share their experiences and learn from each other. This sense of community can help to reduce feelings of isolation and shame, and foster a sense of empowerment among users.
Anonymity and Safety: StoryHub allows users to share their stories anonymously, which is particularly important for those who have experienced trauma or stigma related to SRH. This feature ensures that users feel safe and supported when sharing their experiences.
Moderation and Safeguarding: With strict moderation policies, StoryHub ensures that the content shared on the platform is respectful, supportive, and informative. This creates a safe and positive environment for users to engage with the content and with each other.
The team at StoryHub is uniquely positioned to deliver this solution because we are deeply rooted in the communities we aim to serve. Our Team Lead, [Name], has firsthand experience with the challenges and stigmatization that young people face regarding sexual and reproductive health (SRH) in Tanzania. Idda's personal journey and interactions with friends and family who have faced similar struggles have ignited a passion for creating a platform that empowers and supports young people in their SRH journeys.
Our team is comprised of individuals who have either personal or professional experience with the SRH landscape in Tanzania and globally. This intimate understanding of the challenges faced by our target population ensures that we are developing a solution that truly meets their needs. We have worked closely with the communities we serve, conducting interviews and focus groups to understand their specific needs and concerns. Through this process, we have learned that many young people are eager for a platform like StoryHub, where they can share their stories and learn from others.
In addition to our community engagement efforts, we have actively sought input from the young people we aim to serve. During the development phase of our platform, we conducted interviews with over 100 individuals who expressed a willingness to share their stories and learn from others. Their input has been invaluable in shaping the features and content of StoryHub, ensuring that it is a user-centric platform that truly meets the needs of our target population.
Furthermore, we have established partnerships with local NGOs and community leaders to help us reach and serve our target population effectively. These partners have provided insights and support that have been critical in the development and implementation of StoryHub.
At StoryHub, we are committed to continuous learning and improvement. We recognize that the needs of our target population may evolve over time, and we are dedicated to adapting our solution accordingly. We will maintain an open dialogue with our users and partners, seeking their input and feedback to ensure that StoryHub continues to meet their needs and exceeds their expectations.

Our solution currently serves a community of 30 users who are actively testing our platform. These early adopters are integral to our process as they provide valuable feedback that helps us refine and enhance our platform to better meet the needs of our target population.
In addition to our online platform, we have conducted physical gatherings where approximately 100 people have come together to share their stories and experiences related to sexual and reproductive health. These gatherings have not only provided an opportunity for community-building and support but have also served as a rich source of insights that inform the development of our solution.
Through these interactions, we are learning directly from the people we aim to serve, ensuring that our solution is truly user-centric and designed to address the specific needs and challenges faced by young people in the context of sexual and reproductive health.
StoryHub is an innovative solution because it tackles the problem of lack of sexual and reproductive health (SRH) information and support for young people through a unique crowdsourced storytelling platform. Rather than taking a traditional top-down approach, where information is disseminated from experts to the youth, our platform empowers young people to share their experiences and stories, fostering a sense of community and support.
Our platform is innovative in its approach to SRH education and support:
Crowdsourced Storytelling: By allowing users to share their experiences and stories, we create a rich database of real-life situations and solutions that can be used by other young people facing similar challenges. This peer-to-peer support system is a unique approach to SRH education.
Community Building: The platform brings together young people from various backgrounds to create a supportive community. This community aspect is vital, as it helps to reduce the stigma and isolation that many young people feel when dealing with SRH issues.
Technology Utilization: Our platform leverages technology to reach a wider audience. Through the use of an online platform, we can connect young people from different geographical locations, making our solution accessible to those in remote areas.
Inclusive Design: The platform is designed to be inclusive and user-friendly, ensuring that it is accessible to all young people, regardless of their background or level of education.
The innovation in our solution lies in its ability to catalyze broader positive impacts. By creating a community of young people who are knowledgeable about SRH issues, we are fostering a generation of advocates who can influence others in their communities and drive positive change. Additionally, the stories and experiences shared on the platform can be used by policymakers and other stakeholders to make informed decisions regarding SRH programs and policies.
The use of technology, combined with the crowdsourced storytelling model, positions StoryHub as a game-changer in the SRH education space. We are not just providing information; we are creating a community of informed and empowered young people who can support each other and advocate for better SRH services and policies. Our solution has the potential to change the market by shifting the focus from traditional top-down education models to a more collaborative and inclusive approach that puts young people at the center of the solution.

At StoryHub, we believe that every story matters. We recognize that sexual and reproductive health experiences vary widely based on a myriad of factors, from socio-economic conditions to cultural backgrounds, to individual identities. For this reason, diversity, equity, and inclusivity are not just buzzwords for us but are deeply embedded in our ethos.
Diversity: Our leadership team is a reflection of the communities we serve. We hail from different ethnicities, gender identities, sexual orientations, socio-economic backgrounds, and educational experiences. This diversity ensures a broader spectrum of perspectives in our decision-making processes, leading to richer, more comprehensive outcomes.
Equity: While diversity is about representation, equity is about ensuring everyone has the necessary resources to succeed. Recognizing that not all individuals start from the same point due to historical and systemic inequalities, we've implemented support structures within our platform. For instance, we've ensured that those without robust internet access can still share their stories and experiences by offering offline modes and community center-based access points. This way, every voice, irrespective of their economic background, gets a chance to be heard.
Inclusion: Beyond the technical aspects of our platform, we've prioritized creating an environment where all stories are treated with respect and dignity. Moderation guidelines are in place to ensure that the platform remains a safe space for everyone. Our platform’s guidelines and user interface are co-designed with our users, ensuring that everyone feels not just represented, but also deeply involved in shaping the platform's evolution.
Ongoing Efforts:
Feedback Loops: Regular feedback sessions are conducted with our user base to ensure the platform remains relevant and accessible.
Training: All team members undergo periodic training sessions on unconscious bias, cultural competency, and gender sensitivity. This ensures that our internal environment and external offerings are constantly aligned with our DEI principles.
Community Partnerships: By partnering with local organizations that cater to marginalized communities, we ensure that their unique challenges and requirements are incorporated into our platform.
Our commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion is an ongoing journey. We constantly seek to learn, adapt, and improve, making sure that StoryHub is not just a platform for stories but a reflection of the varied and rich tapestry of experiences that shape sexual and reproductive health narratives around the world.
