Comic Health Tales
The problem of insufficient access to comprehensive sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) information is glaringly evident in Tanzania, which is indicative of a broader global issue.
In Tanzania, statistics show the stark reality that adolescents face regarding their SRHR. According to the Tanzania Demographic and Health Survey, 27% of girls aged 15-19 have begun childbearing. Furthermore, the adolescent birth rate stands at a troubling 120 per 1,000 girls, ranking among the highest in the world. Child marriages are also prevalent, with 36% of girls married off before the age of 18. These statistics paint a picture of the dire consequences that arise from a lack of comprehensive SRHR education and services.
Moreover, young people in Tanzania, especially girls and young women, face additional barriers in accessing SRHR information and services. These include cultural taboos, stigmatization, and economic disparities, which often result in young women having limited agency over their own bodies. Limited access to comprehensive sexuality education, coupled with transportation barriers and economic exclusion, further compounds the problem, leaving many young women without the essential care they require.
The problem is not restricted to Tanzania. Globally, the World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that approximately 12 million girls aged 15-19 years, and at least 777,000 girls under 15 years, give birth each year in developing regions. This is compounded by the fact that 214 million women of reproductive age in developing regions who want to avoid pregnancy are not using modern contraceptive methods. This lack of access to modern contraceptive methods is largely due to a lack of information and services, as highlighted by the Guttmacher Institute. The global nature of this issue is further emphasized by the fact that child marriages, female genital mutilation, and other harmful practices continue to be prevalent in many parts of the world, further infringing on the SRHR of young women and girls.
The lack of access to accurate SRHR information, commodities, and services, combined with inadequate healthcare infrastructure, cultural norms, and stigmatization, among other factors, pose significant obstacles to young people realizing their right to the highest attainable standard of health. These challenges prevent young people, especially young women and girls, from making informed choices about their sexual and reproductive health and well-being, thereby limiting their ability to fully participate in society and contribute to their economies.
This lack of access to comprehensive SRHR information and services is a violation of young people's rights and has long-term implications for their health and well-being, as well as for the development and progress of societies and economies at large. It is crucial to address this issue head-on and work towards providing young people, especially girls and young women, with the tools and information they need to make informed choices about their sexual and reproductive health, ultimately empowering them to lead healthier, more fulfilling lives.

Comic Health Tales aims to provide a comprehensive and engaging solution to the lack of sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) information through the medium of comic books. Our solution is simple: use relatable stories and vibrant illustrations to educate young people on SRHR topics in an easily digestible format that is both engaging and informative.
Our comic book series, Health Heroes, will consist of several episodes, each addressing specific SRHR themes, such as puberty, contraception, consent, and gender-based violence. The storylines will be relatable to young people, showcasing characters who face similar challenges and questions regarding their SRHR. By following the characters' journeys, readers will gain valuable insights and information on these critical topics.
To ensure the comic book series is accessible to all, we will distribute both physical copies and digital versions. The digital version will be available for free download on our website, while physical copies will be distributed to schools, libraries, and community centers in Tanzania and eventually other parts of the world.
Our comic book series will also include interactive elements such as quizzes and reflection questions at the end of each episode to help readers assess their understanding and reflect on the lessons learned. Additionally, we will incorporate QR codes that link to further resources, such as educational videos and articles, for those who wish to delve deeper into specific topics.
Furthermore, we aim to utilize technology to enhance the learning experience. For example, we are exploring the possibility of developing an app that would allow users to access the comic book series on their mobile devices. This would also enable us to incorporate augmented reality elements, such as interactive 3D models and animations, to further explain complex SRHR topics.
We are currently in the process of writing the comic book series and hope to publish it by the end of 2023. Our team consists of experienced comic book writers, illustrators, and SRHR experts who are dedicated to producing a high-quality product that is both educational and enjoyable.
Our solution primarily serves young people aged 10-25 in Tanzania, with plans to expand globally. This demographic is often underserved when it comes to sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) information. Cultural taboos, lack of comprehensive sex education, and limited access to youth-friendly health services are some of the barriers they face in obtaining accurate and relevant SRHR information.
In Tanzania, only 10.4% of schools provide comprehensive sexuality education, and nearly 60% of young people aged 15-24 have an unmet need for family planning. Moreover, Tanzania has one of the highest adolescent pregnancy rates, with approximately 21% of girls aged 15-19 either pregnant or have given birth. This lack of SRHR information not only affects young people's health and wellbeing but also has broader social and economic implications, such as increased school dropout rates and limited future opportunities.
Our comic book series, Health Heroes, aims to address the gap in SRHR information by providing young people with accurate, age-appropriate, and culturally sensitive information in an engaging format. The stories will feature relatable characters who navigate the complexities of adolescence, providing readers with practical knowledge and strategies to make informed choices regarding their sexual and reproductive health.
The impact on the lives of young people will be significant. With increased knowledge and awareness, they will be better equipped to make informed decisions about their bodies and relationships, leading to improved health outcomes. For example, by understanding the importance of contraception and having access to accurate information about different contraceptive methods, young people will be able to prevent unintended pregnancies and sexually transmitted infections (STIs).
By addressing topics such as consent and gender-based violence, our comic book series will empower young people to advocate for their rights and the rights of others. This is particularly important in Tanzania, where gender-based violence is prevalent, with nearly 40% of women aged 15-49 having experienced physical or sexual violence.
Our solution will also have broader societal benefits. By promoting gender equality and empowering young people with the knowledge and tools they need to make informed choices, we can contribute to reducing school dropout rates, improving economic opportunities, and ultimately fostering more inclusive and sustainable communities.
Anisia Kebyela, our founder and team lead, was born and raised in Tanzania, and from a young age, she witnessed the challenges that young people, particularly girls, face when it comes to accessing accurate and reliable sexual and reproductive health information. She recalls the story of her close friend, Amina, who became pregnant at the age of 15 due to a lack of knowledge about contraception. Amina’s dreams of becoming a teacher were dashed as she had to drop out of school to care for her baby.
This personal experience has fueled Anisia’s passion for improving the sexual and reproductive health education available to young people in Tanzania and around the world. Anisia is not just an advocate for this cause; she is part of the community she serves and deeply understands the cultural, social, and economic barriers that prevent young people from accessing the information they need.
Anisia has assembled a team that is equally passionate about this cause and has a diverse range of skills and experiences that are crucial to the success of the project. The team includes educators, health professionals, and creative artists who are working together to create a comic book series that is not only educational but also culturally sensitive and relatable to the target audience.
We are committed to ensuring that our solution is meaningfully guided by the communities we aim to serve. We have conducted focus group discussions and surveys with young people in Tanzania to understand their needs and preferences when it comes to SRHR information. We are also collaborating with local NGOs and community-based organizations to ensure that our comic book series is culturally sensitive and relevant to the target audience.
We have engaged young people in the design and development process of the comic book series. They have provided input on the storylines, characters, and messaging to ensure that it resonates with them and addresses their needs. We are also planning to pilot the comic book series in selected schools and communities in Tanzania and gather feedback from young people and educators before launching it globally.
- Prioritize infrastructure centered around young people to enhance young people’s access to SRH information, commodities and services.

- Pilot: An organization testing a product, service, or business model with a small number of users
As of now, our comic book series is still in the writing and development phase, and we expect to publish it by the end of 2023. Therefore, we have not yet distributed any copies or served any individuals directly with our solution.
However, once launched, we have a strategic plan in place to distribute approximately 500 copies of our comic book series to 20 secondary schools across the region. This will enable us to directly reach and impact the lives of 1,000s of young people who attend these schools. In addition, we will utilize various online platforms and social media to further disseminate the comic book series and reach an even wider audience. This will allow us to extend our reach and positively impact the lives of young people both locally and potentially globally.
Our goal is to provide young people with the knowledge and information they need to make informed decisions about their sexual and reproductive health, and we believe our comic book series is a unique and innovative way to achieve this. Through engaging storytelling and relatable characters, we aim to break down the barriers that often prevent young people from accessing the SRH information they need. By doing so, we hope to contribute to the improvement of SRH outcomes for young people and foster a more informed and empowered generation.
Comic Health Tales brings an innovative approach to sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) education by utilizing comic books as a medium to deliver vital information in an engaging and relatable manner. By combining storytelling with educational content, we are able to capture the attention of young people and deliver SRHR information in a format that is both entertaining and informative.
Our solution is unique in that it leverages the universal appeal of comic books to educate and empower young people on SRHR. The comic book series will cover a range of topics, from puberty and menstruation to consent and healthy relationships, providing comprehensive and age-appropriate information that is often lacking in traditional educational settings.
One of the innovative aspects of our solution is the use of relatable stories that reflect the experiences and challenges faced by young people in Tanzania and around the world. The characters and situations in the comic books are designed to be representative of the target audience, making the content more relatable and impactful.
The comic book series also has the potential to catalyze broader positive impacts in the SRHR space. By providing young people with accurate and accessible information, we can contribute to improved SRHR outcomes and empower young people to make informed decisions about their bodies and relationships. Additionally, the comic book series can serve as a valuable resource for educators, parents, and caregivers, providing them with a tool to facilitate conversations about SRHR with young people.
The market for SRHR education is currently dominated by traditional methods such as classroom-based learning and pamphlets. Our solution brings a fresh and innovative approach to the market, leveraging the popularity of comic books to deliver SRHR education in a format that is more appealing to young people. We believe that our solution has the potential to change the market by providing a new and effective way to reach young people with vital SRHR information.
Comic Health Tales brings an innovative and impactful solution to the challenge of SRHR education. By leveraging the universal appeal of comic books and combining it with relatable stories and comprehensive information, we are able to deliver SRHR education in a format that is both engaging and effective. We believe that our solution has the potential to catalyze positive change in the SRHR space and contribute to improved outcomes for young people in Tanzania and around the world.
Our impact goals for the next year include:

- Reach at least 10,000 young people with our SRHR educational content, through both the comic book series and associated online platforms.
- Establish partnerships with local organizations and government bodies to support the distribution and promotion of the comic book series.
In order to achieve these goals, we will focus on finalizing the content and design of the comic book series, securing funding for printing and distribution, and developing a comprehensive marketing and outreach strategy. We will also work to build relationships with key stakeholders, including schools, youth organizations, and government bodies, to support the distribution and promotion of the comic book series.
Our impact goals for the next five years include:
- Expand the distribution of our comic book series to reach at least 100,000 young people across Tanzania.
- Develop and launch additional comic book series covering a range of SRHR topics, including LGBTQ+ issues, gender-based violence, and more.
- Establish Comic Health Tales as a leading resource for SRHR education in Tanzania and the East African region.
In order to achieve these longer-term goals, we will focus on scaling our operations, developing new content, and building partnerships with a wider range of stakeholders. We will also work to leverage technology to increase the accessibility of our content, including developing digital versions of the comic book series and creating online platforms for SRHR education.
Ultimately, our goal is to contribute to improved SRHR outcomes for young people in Tanzania and around the world, empowering them to make informed decisions about their bodies and relationships. By providing accessible, relatable, and comprehensive SRHR education, we believe that we can help to address the root causes of poor SRHR outcomes and support young people in realizing their full potential.
Our solution aims to improve sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) outcomes for young people in Tanzania through education. The theory of change behind our comic book series is as follows:
- Activity: Develop and distribute a comic book series that provides relatable stories while educating young people on SRHR.
- Output: Young people in Tanzania have increased access to accurate and relatable SRHR information through the comic book series.
- Outcome: Improved knowledge and understanding of SRHR among young people in Tanzania.
- Impact: Improved SRHR outcomes and respect for SRHR rights among young people in Tanzania.
Our comic book series will provide young people with SRHR information in a format that is engaging and relatable. By using storytelling and illustrations, we aim to make SRHR education more accessible and enjoyable, breaking down the barriers that often exist when it comes to discussing these topics.
The need for improved SRHR education in Tanzania is supported by data that shows high rates of teenage pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections among young people. According to the Tanzania Demographic and Health Survey, 27% of women aged 15-19 have already begun childbearing, and the prevalence of HIV among young people aged 15-24 is 3.1% for females and 1.2% for males.
Furthermore, our solution is informed by the experiences and needs of young people in Tanzania. Through interviews and focus group discussions with young people, we have identified a gap in the availability of relatable and engaging SRHR education materials. Our comic book series is designed to fill this gap and provide young people with the information they need to make informed decisions about their bodies and relationships.
