YouthVoice
In Tanzania, the need for comprehensive sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) education is evident in the various challenges that young people face regarding their sexual and reproductive health. According to the Tanzania Demographic and Health Survey, the adolescent birth rate is high, with 27% of girls aged 15-19 having begun childbearing. This indicates a lack of access to contraception and family planning services, as well as insufficient SRHR education.
Moreover, the prevalence of HIV among young people in Tanzania is concerning, with an estimated 5.6% of people aged 15-24 living with HIV. This highlights the urgent need for comprehensive SRHR education to prevent the spread of HIV and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs).
Furthermore, gender-based violence and harmful traditional practices, such as child marriage and female genital mutilation, continue to affect the sexual and reproductive health and rights of young people, particularly girls, in Tanzania. According to UNICEF, 36% of girls in Tanzania are married before the age of 18, which often results in early and unintended pregnancies.
YouthVoice aims to tackle these issues by providing peer-led SRHR workshops that focus on empowering young people with the knowledge and skills they need to make informed decisions about their sexual and reproductive health. Our workshops are designed to be culturally sensitive and age-appropriate, addressing the specific needs and challenges faced by young people in Tanzania.
By equipping young people with the information they need to make informed decisions about their sexual and reproductive health, we hope to contribute to the reduction of adolescent pregnancies, the prevalence of STIs, and gender-based violence in Tanzania. Our workshops also foster a supportive community where young people can openly discuss and learn about SRHR in a safe and inclusive environment, free from stigma and discrimination.
The lack of comprehensive SRHR education in Tanzania is a significant problem that affects the health and well-being of young people. YouthVoice is committed to addressing this issue by providing peer-led workshops that empower young people with the knowledge and tools they need to make informed decisions about their sexual and reproductive health. By doing so, we hope to contribute to a future where every young person in Tanzania can enjoy their sexual and reproductive rights fully.
YouthVoice is a pioneering initiative aimed at empowering the youth in Tanzania with essential knowledge and skills on Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) through a series of engaging, peer-led workshops.
Our solution is unique because it is youth-led, meaning that the workshops are designed and facilitated by young people for their peers. This peer-to-peer approach fosters a sense of solidarity and makes the learning process more relatable and effective.
The workshops are structured to be interactive and participatory, providing a safe and inclusive space where young people can openly discuss and learn about SRHR. Topics covered in the workshops include:
1. Understanding SRHR: Providing clear definitions and explanations of sexual and reproductive health and rights, and why they are crucial for young people.
2. Comprehensive Sexuality Education: Covering essential topics such as anatomy, puberty, consent, contraception, and family planning.
3. HIV/AIDS and STI Prevention: Educating participants on how to protect themselves from HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted infections.
4. Gender Equality and Combating Gender-Based Violence: Raising awareness about gender-based violence, child marriage, and female genital mutilation, and promoting gender equality.
5.Empowerment and Decision-Making: Encouraging young people to make informed decisions about their sexual and reproductive health and providing them with the tools to do so.
Our workshops are designed to be culturally sensitive and age-appropriate, taking into consideration the specific needs and challenges faced by young people in Tanzania.
To enhance the impact of our workshops, we leverage technology to provide participants with access to additional resources and support. This includes a mobile app that serves as a platform for continued learning and engagement, offering accurate and reliable information on SRHR topics, as well as a community forum where young people can connect, share experiences, and support each other.
YouthVoice is a comprehensive solution that aims to fill the gap in SRHR education in Tanzania by providing youth-led, interactive workshops that empower young people with the knowledge and skills they need to make informed decisions about their sexual and reproductive health.
Through our innovative use of technology, we are able to extend the impact of our workshops and provide ongoing support to participants, ensuring that they have the resources they need to enjoy their sexual and reproductive rights fully.
YouthVoice specifically serves young people aged 15 to 24 in Tanzania, where there is a significant gap in sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) education. The youth in Tanzania face several challenges that compromise their ability to fully enjoy their SRHR, including high rates of HIV/AIDS, teenage pregnancies, gender-based violence, and child marriages.
Currently, many young people in Tanzania lack access to accurate and reliable information on SRHR. Traditional cultural norms and taboos around discussing sex and reproductive health further exacerbate the issue, leaving young people vulnerable and uninformed.
Our solution directly addresses this gap by providing youth-led, comprehensive SRHR workshops that are specifically designed to meet the needs of young people in Tanzania. These workshops empower young people with essential knowledge and skills, enabling them to make informed decisions about their sexual and reproductive health.
Here are some of the specific ways our solution will impact the lives of young people in Tanzania:
1. Increased Knowledge and Awareness: Participants will gain a clear understanding of their sexual and reproductive rights and learn about important topics such as anatomy, puberty, consent, contraception, and family planning.
2. Prevention of HIV/AIDS and STIs: Through our workshops, young people will learn how to protect themselves from HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted infections.
3. Reduced Rates of Teenage Pregnancies and Child Marriages: By providing access to accurate information on contraception and family planning, we aim to reduce the rates of teenage pregnancies and child marriages.
4.Empowerment and Improved Decision-Making: Our workshops will empower young people to make informed decisions about their sexual and reproductive health, and provide them with the tools they need to do so.
5. Fostering a Supportive Community: The use of our mobile app will create a community forum where young people can connect, share experiences, and support each other.
6.Promoting Gender Equality: Our workshops will raise awareness about gender-based violence, child marriage, and female genital mutilation, and promote gender equality.

To fully understand the needs of the young people we are serving, we have conducted extensive research, including surveys, interviews, and focus group discussions, to gather insights from the target population. This research has been instrumental in shaping our solution and ensuring it is tailored to meet the specific needs of young people in Tanzania.
Engaging with the community is a central part of our approach. We have formed partnerships with local organizations, schools, and community leaders to help us reach young people in different parts of the country. We also work closely with young people themselves, involving them in the design and delivery of our workshops to ensure they are relevant and effective.
Our workshops are co-created with young people, who provide valuable input on the content, format, and delivery of the sessions. We also conduct regular feedback sessions to gather insights from participants and use this feedback to continuously improve our solution.
