Life on Wheels
Problem Description:
The problem we are addressing within the 4HerPower Challenge is the limited access to comprehensive sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) services among young people, particularly adolescent girls and young women, in Rwanda.
Scale of the Problem in Rwanda:
In Rwanda, the lack of accessible SRHR services in remote and underserved areas is a pressing issue. This challenge is exacerbated by several factors:
Geographical Barriers: Rwanda's topography and scattered population centers make it challenging for many young people, especially those in rural areas, to access healthcare facilities.
Cultural and Stigma-Related Barriers: Stigma and societal taboos surrounding SRHR topics often discourage young people from seeking essential care due to fear of judgment and social repercussions.
Lack of Awareness: Limited access to comprehensive sexuality education and awareness programs leaves many young people uninformed about SRHR matters.
Language Barriers: Rwanda's diverse linguistic landscape can create language barriers between healthcare providers and young people, hindering effective communication.
Local Statistics:
According to the Rwanda Demographic and Health Survey (RDHS) 2019-2020, the adolescent birth rate in Rwanda is 62 births per 1,000 girls aged 15-19, highlighting the need for comprehensive SRHR services and education.
The RDHS also indicates that only 63% of married adolescent girls use modern contraception, demonstrating the need to improve access to contraceptive methods.
Access to STI screening and treatment services remains limited in remote areas, contributing to the spread of sexually transmitted infections among young people.
Global Perspective:
While we are focusing our solution on Rwanda, these challenges are not unique to the country. Globally, there are millions of young people facing similar barriers to accessing SRHR services. According to the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA):
Approximately 1.2 billion young people aged 15-24 make up 16% of the world's population, and many of them lack access to SRHR services and information.
In low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) like Rwanda, limited access to SRHR services disproportionately affects adolescent girls and young women.
Scale of Affected Population:
In Rwanda, our solution targets young people, particularly adolescent girls and young women, who make up a significant portion of the population. While precise figures vary, we estimate that millions of young people in Rwanda are affected by these SRHR challenges.
Relevance to Our Solution:
Our solution, "Life on Wheels," directly addresses these factors contributing to the problem. By deploying mobile clinics that offer SRHR services and education to underserved areas, we aim to overcome geographical barriers, provide culturally sensitive care, and offer services in local languages. "Life on Wheels" also promotes comprehensive SRHR education and awareness to tackle the lack of information and stigma. Through our approach, we seek to empower young people to make informed choices about their SRHR, ultimately improving their overall well-being.
Our solution, "Life on Wheels," is a mobile healthcare initiative designed to improve access to sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) services for young people, with a specific focus on adolescent girls and young women in remote areas of Rwanda. It is essentially a healthcare service on wheels, providing a range of SRHR services directly to underserved communities.
What Is It?
"Life on Wheels" consists of specially equipped mobile clinics that travel to remote and hard-to-reach areas in Rwanda. These mobile clinics are staffed by trained healthcare professionals and equipped with the necessary medical supplies to offer a comprehensive suite of SRHR services.
What Does It Do?
Our solution does the following:
Deliver SRHR Services: "Life on Wheels" provides services such as contraception counseling, distribution of contraceptives (including long-acting reversible contraceptives), STI screening and treatment, menstrual hygiene education, and reproductive health counseling.
Empower and Educate: The mobile clinics aim to empower young people by offering them access to accurate information about SRHR, breaking down stigmas, and providing a platform for open dialogue. We offer counseling and educational materials to help young people make informed decisions about their sexual and reproductive health.
Overcome Geographical Barriers: By reaching remote and underserved areas, our mobile clinics eliminate geographical barriers that often prevent young people from accessing SRHR services.
Ensure Confidentiality: We prioritize confidentiality and privacy in our services, creating a safe and non-judgmental environment for young people to seek care.
How It Works:
When a "Life on Wheels" mobile clinic visits a community in Rwanda, it follows these steps:
Community Outreach: We engage with local communities to announce the clinic's visit, location, and services. This ensures that young people are aware and prepared to access SRHR services.
Service Provision: Trained healthcare professionals on board the mobile clinic offer a range of SRHR services, ensuring that young people receive the care they need. This includes counseling, screenings, and the distribution of contraceptives.
Education and Awareness: We conduct awareness sessions and workshops on SRHR topics within the community, educating young people about their sexual and reproductive health.
Language and Cultural Sensitivity: Our staff is trained to communicate effectively in local languages and respect cultural norms, ensuring that young people can access services comfortably.
Technology Used:
While "Life on Wheels" is primarily a mobile healthcare service, we incorporate technology to enhance its effectiveness. We use mobile applications and SMS to coordinate visits, communicate with communities, and provide educational materials. Additionally, we employ data analytics to assess the impact of our services and make improvements based on feedback and data.
In simple terms, "Life on Wheels" is a mobile healthcare service that brings essential SRHR services and education directly to the doorsteps of young people in remote areas of Rwanda. Through trained healthcare professionals, technology, and community engagement, we aim to empower young people to make informed choices about their sexual and reproductive health, ultimately improving their well-being and access to SRHR services.
Our solution, "Life on Wheels," is designed to directly and meaningfully improve the lives of young people in remote and underserved areas of Rwanda, with a specific focus on adolescent girls and young women. These individuals face unique challenges in accessing sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) services, and "Life on Wheels" is tailored to address their needs comprehensively.
Target Population:
Our primary target population includes:
Adolescent Girls and Young Women: This group represents a significant portion of the population in Rwanda and often encounters barriers to accessing SRHR services. They may lack information about contraception, face social and cultural stigmas, and experience geographical isolation.
Youth in Remote Areas: "Life on Wheels" specifically aims to reach young people living in remote and hard-to-reach areas of Rwanda, where healthcare infrastructure is limited or non-existent. These communities often lack access to essential SRHR services.
Current Underserved Status:
The target population faces several challenges that contribute to their underserved status:
Geographical Barriers: Many young people in remote areas are geographically isolated from healthcare facilities, making it difficult to access SRHR services, including contraception and STI screening.
Cultural Stigmas: Social and cultural stigmas surrounding SRHR topics can discourage young people from seeking care, leading to unmet needs and misconceptions.
Lack of Comprehensive Education: The lack of comprehensive sexuality education and awareness programs leaves young people uninformed about SRHR matters, hindering their ability to make informed choices.
Language Barriers: Rwanda's diverse linguistic landscape can create language barriers between healthcare providers and young people, limiting effective communication.
Impact on Their Lives:
"Life on Wheels" aims to have a transformative impact on the lives of our target population:
Improved SRHR Access: By delivering SRHR services directly to their communities, we empower young people to access essential care without the need for long and costly journeys to healthcare facilities.
Confidentiality and Privacy: Our solution prioritizes confidentiality and privacy, creating a safe space for young people to seek care and information without fear of judgment.
Education and Empowerment: Through counseling, educational materials, and awareness programs, we equip young people with the knowledge and skills to make informed decisions about their sexual and reproductive health.
Cultural Sensitivity: "Life on Wheels" recognizes and respects cultural norms and linguistic diversity, ensuring that young people can communicate effectively with healthcare providers in their preferred language.
Reduced Stigma: By engaging with communities and promoting open dialogue, we work to reduce the social and cultural stigmas surrounding SRHR topics, encouraging young people to seek care and support.
In summary, "Life on Wheels" directly serves young people in remote areas of Rwanda who are currently underserved in terms of SRHR services. Our solution aims to positively impact their lives by providing accessible, confidential, and culturally sensitive SRHR services, education, and support. Through these efforts, we empower young people to make informed choices about their sexual and reproductive health, ultimately improving their overall well-being and quality of life.
Our team, composed of medical doctors, nurses, and clinical psychologists, is uniquely well-positioned to deliver the "Life on Wheels" solution to the target population in remote areas of Rwanda. Community Engagement: We actively engage with local communities through ongoing dialogue and partnerships with community leaders and organizations. We conduct needs assessments, focus group discussions, and surveys to gain insights into the specific SRHR needs and challenges faced by young people in remote areas.
Representative Team Composition: While our team may consist of medical professionals, we are not detached from the communities we serve. Our Team Lead and team members come from diverse backgrounds, and some have personal experiences that bring them closer to the target population:
Cultural Diversity: Our team members include individuals from various cultural backgrounds, allowing us to understand and respect the cultural nuances and preferences of different communities.
Youth Perspective: We have team members who belong to the same generation as the target population. They offer insights into the unique challenges faced by young people and can relate to their experiences.

Community Partnerships: We actively collaborate with local organizations, community leaders, and youth representatives to co-create the solution. This ensures that our services align with the specific needs and priorities of the communities.
Feedback Mechanisms: We have established feedback mechanisms, including regular community meetings and surveys, to gather input from community members. Their feedback helps us adapt our services and continually improve.
Youth Participation: Young people are actively involved in the planning and decision-making processes. We provide opportunities for them to voice their concerns, share their insights, and actively participate in shaping the services provided.
In summary, our team is not only composed of qualified medical professionals but is also deeply rooted in the communities we aim to serve. We understand the specific needs, challenges, and cultural dynamics of these communities, and our approach is guided by their input and ideas. By engaging with and listening to the communities, we ensure that "Life on Wheels" is not just a healthcare solution but a community-driven initiative that directly addresses the SRHR needs of young people in remote areas of Rwanda.
- Strengthen the capacity and engagement of young innovators in the development, implementation and growth of solutions addressing their SRHR needs.

- Pilot: An organization testing a product, service, or business model with a small number of users
As of the current stage of our pilot program, "Life on Wheels" has directly served approximately 200 individuals in the communities where our mobile clinics have been deployed. These individuals have accessed a range of sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) services, including contraception counseling, STI screening, menstrual hygiene education, and reproductive health counseling. We are committed to expanding our reach and impact as we continue to refine and improve our services.
Our solution, "Life on Wheels," is innovative in several key ways, fundamentally transforming the approach to addressing sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) challenges in remote areas of Rwanda:
Mobile Clinics: Our innovative approach involves the use of mobile clinics that travel to remote and underserved communities. This brings SRHR services directly to the doorstep of young people, eliminating geographical barriers. The mobility of our clinics is a new application of an existing concept, effectively bridging the gap in healthcare access.
Two-Way Translated Communication: We leverage technology to provide two-way translated communication between healthcare providers and young people in their preferred languages. This innovative use of technology ensures effective, confidential, and culturally sensitive communication, overcoming language barriers that have traditionally hindered healthcare access.
Personalized SRHR Education: "Life on Wheels" employs machine learning and natural language processing to offer personalized SRHR education and counseling. By tailoring information and support to individual needs, we empower young people to make informed choices about their sexual and reproductive health. This personalized approach is a new application of technology in the SRHR space.
Community Engagement: Our solution actively engages with communities, including young women and girls, to co-create and refine our services. This approach fosters a sense of ownership and ensures that our solution is aligned with the specific needs and priorities of the target population. It catalyzes broader positive impacts by promoting community participation and empowerment.
Youth Leadership: "Life on Wheels" embraces the leadership and involvement of young women and girls within our team. This not only demonstrates our commitment to youth engagement but also serves as a model for broader youth participation in SRHR initiatives. By showcasing the effectiveness of youth-led solutions, we inspire others in this space to prioritize youth leadership.
Market Transformation: Our approach challenges the traditional healthcare delivery model by decentralizing SRHR services. As a result, we have the potential to change the market by demonstrating the feasibility and impact of mobile clinics and technology-driven, community-centered SRHR solutions. This can inspire other organizations and governments to adopt similar approaches, leading to a shift in how SRHR services are delivered.
In summary, "Life on Wheels" is innovative through its use of mobile clinics, technology-driven communication, personalized education, community engagement, and youth leadership. By leveraging these innovations, we not only address the SRHR needs of young people in remote areas but also inspire broader positive impacts in the SRHR space, transform the market, and catalyze a shift toward more accessible and youth-centered healthcare solutions.

- Individual consumers or stakeholders (B2C)
We will explore a fee-for-service model for specific SRHR services in a manner that generates revenue without creating financial barriers to access for our beneficiaries. This approach will be implemented thoughtfully, prioritizing affordability and equitable access.
1. Grant Funding and Donations:
We will actively seek grants from international development agencies, foundations, and philanthropic organizations that support initiatives focused on sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) for young people.
Donations from individuals and corporate partners who share our mission and values will also play a crucial role in funding our programs.
2. Government Partnerships and Service Contracts:
Collaborations with the Rwandan government at both the national and local levels are integral to our sustainability plan. We aim to secure service contracts to provide SRHR services and education in partnership with government healthcare facilities and educational institutions.
By aligning our services with national SRHR priorities, we can access government funding and resources to support our operations.
3. Fee-for-Service Model:
In certain cases, we may explore a fee-for-service model for specific SRHR services that can generate revenue while ensuring affordability for our beneficiaries. This approach would be implemented thoughtfully to avoid any financial barriers to access.
4. Social Enterprise Initiatives:
We will explore opportunities to establish social enterprises, such as the sale of SRHR-related products or services, with the profits reinvested into our mission. For example, we could produce and sell reusable menstrual products to generate income and promote menstrual health awareness.
5. Impact Investment and Partnerships:
We will seek strategic partnerships with impact investors who are aligned with our mission and can provide financial support while also offering expertise and resources to scale our operations.
These partnerships may include collaborations with businesses that have a shared interest in advancing SRHR and youth empowerment.
6. Sustainability through Youth Leadership:
Our youth leadership programs will not only empower young people but also provide opportunities for them to contribute to our financial sustainability. As they become advocates and educators, they can mobilize resources, raise awareness, and attract funding through their own initiatives.
7. Diversification and Risk Management:
To ensure financial resilience, we will diversify our revenue streams to reduce dependence on any single source of funding.
We will establish robust financial management and risk mitigation strategies to navigate potential challenges and uncertainties.
8. Monitoring and Adaptation:
