KeluarGuard: Youth and Parent SRH Empowerment

"KeluarGuard," is an innovative project aimed at prioritizing infrastructure to enhance youth access to Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH) information, commodities, and services. KeluarGuard focuses on empowering parents with the knowledge and skills to facilitate age-appropriate SRH conversations with their children. Hence, the challenge we seek to tackle is twofold:

Lack of Comprehensive SRH Education for Young People: In Indonesia, youth face a critical information gap when it comes to sexual and reproductive health. This knowledge deficit leads to uninformed decisions, and increased vulnerability to health risks, unintended pregnancies, and sexually transmitted infections. The consequences of this problem extend to society, affecting individual lives and straining public health systems and economic productivity.

Inadequate Parental Guidance: Many parents are ill-equipped to initiate SRH conversations with their children due to cultural taboos, lack of knowledge, or fear of misguiding their children. As a result, youth are deprived of essential SRH information, and parents who want to guide their children lack the resources and skills to do so effectively.

 As a comprehensive platform designed to address these challenges head-on, KeluarGuard  will:

1. Provide parents with easily accessible, culturally sensitive, and age-appropriate SRH information;

2. Serve as a hub of knowledge, offering guidance on how to have open and constructive conversations about SRH with children as young as seven years old, and;

3. Empower parents to become effective educators and mentors, bridging the knowledge gap for their children.

Furthermore, KeluarGuard extends beyond immediate beneficiaries. It aims:

1. Reduction in unintended pregnancies and sexually transmitted infections among youth;

2. Improved overall SRH outcomes;

3. Empowerment of parents plays a pivotal role in shaping their children's attitudes and behaviors, and;

4. Alignment with global efforts to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Goal 3 (Good Health and Well-being) and Goal 5 (Gender Equality).

What is KeluarGuard?

KeluarGuard is a user-friendly platform that leverages technology to empower parents to provide their children with accurate and age-appropriate SRH education. It offers accessible information, age-appropriate content, interactive tools, and guidance for parents, all within a secure and supportive online environment. By bridging the knowledge gap and fostering open dialogue, KeluarGuard plays a crucial role in ensuring that young people have the information and support they need to make informed decisions about their sexual and reproductive health.

How Does KeluarGuard Work?

Accessible Information: Parents and caregivers can access the KeluarGuard platform through a website. It's designed to be simple to navigate and available in local languages for easy understanding. It also incorporates youth testimonies that will give parents more perspective on how youth wish to be treated when engaging in SRH conversation among families;

Age-Appropriate Content: KeluarGuard provides a wealth of age-appropriate SRH information tailored to various age groups, starting as young as seven years old. Parents can select the content that suits their child's age and comprehension level;

Guidance for Parents and Youth: KeluarGuard offers guidance to parents on how to initiate SRH conversations with their children. It provides tips, conversation starters, and strategies to create a comfortable and open dialogue. For youth, KeluarGuard also guides how they can access this guidance, both Parents and Youth need to complete self-assessments which will help KeluarGuard tailor the guide based on their needs. 

Community Support: KeluarGuard fosters a supportive online community of parents, where they can share their experiences, ask questions, and learn from each other.

Technology: The platform leverages advanced technology, including AI-driven chatbots, to answer common questions and provide instant support to parents. It also incorporates user feedback to continuously improve the user experience.

Data Privacy: KeluarGuard places a strong emphasis on data privacy and security. All user information is kept confidential, ensuring a safe environment for parents and children.

Why is KeluarGuard Important?

Empowering Parents: KeluarGuard empowers parents to become primary educators in their children's SRH journey, helping them make informed decisions about their bodies and relationships;

Age-Appropriate Learning: By tailoring content to different age groups, KeluarGuard ensures that parents and youth receive information that matches their level of maturity, reducing confusion and anxiety;

Open Dialogue: The platform fosters open and non-judgmental conversations about SRH within families, creating a supportive environment where children feel comfortable asking questions and seeking guidance.

Knowledge Sharing: Parents can learn from each other's experiences, creating a sense of community and solidarity in navigating the challenges of SRH education.

KeluarGuard's target population includes parents, caregivers, and youth in Indonesia who are currently underserved in terms of accurate and age-appropriate SRH education. The solution addresses their needs by empowering parents to become primary educators, providing age-appropriate learning resources, fostering open dialogue within families, and creating a supportive community for knowledge sharing and solidarity.

As youth, we understand how hard it is to get the right information regarding SRH that we need as soon as we are hitting puberty. Having no one to talk to, including parents, makes it even harder to navigate choices to make when we are getting closer to being an adult. Being involved in 2030 Youth Force Indonesia which focused on ensuring youth meaningful participation in the implementation of SGDs, we are faced with the bigger phenomenon where the impacts of not having the right SRH knowledge could lead youth, even at an early age to experience child marriage, unwanted pregnancies, and STD infection.

While SRH on the internet is in abundance, we are faced with the next challenges. If we were back to 7 years old and facing a mountain of information, then how could we effectively sort that information to match our needs? Hence, we concluded that parents' roles are vitally needed. With 3 years of managing SRH projects, especially in child marriage issues, we believe that our understanding of youth needs in SRH could empower parents with the knowledge and skills to facilitate age-appropriate SRH conversations with their children and ultimately bring the family-oriented SRH education that the children needed.

Up until this point, we already created the website's simple interface, even though it is still in an offline state and prepared the self-assessment form to be tested with target beneficiaries.

KeluarGuard offers a comprehensive set of features to ensure accessible and age-appropriate SRH education. Through a user-friendly website, parents and caregivers can easily navigate the platform. Age-specific SRH content, beginning as early as seven years old, allows parents to select materials suited to their child's age and understanding. Guidance is readily available for parents, offering tips and conversation starters to foster an open and comfortable dialogue. KeluarGuard also creates a supportive online community for parents to share experiences and learn from one another. Leveraging advanced technology, the platform utilizes AI-driven chatbots to provide instant support and constantly enhances the user experience based on user feedback.
