HelloDoula
Among developed countries, The United States has the highest growing maternal mortality rate. At approximately 17 maternal deaths per 100,000 live births, the United States maternal mortality rate is more than ten times higher than any other developed country. There are over 6.9 million women and almost 500,000 births across the U.S. who have low or no access to maternity care. Regardless of income or education level, Black women are three times as likely to die from pregnancy-related complications than white women. Overall, studies show that 84% of U.S. maternal deaths and pregnancy complications are preventable. Health disparities, lack of access to quality care, and limited education all contribute to the growing number of maternal health crises.
HelloDoula aims to bridge this gap by connecting families with diverse and experienced doulas and an AI-powered assistant that provides personalized educational and emotional support.
Research has shown that doula care is among the most promising approaches to combating disparities in maternal health. It has been proven to improve childbirth outcomes, decrease maternal mortality rates, increase care quality, and provide significant healthcare cost savings. Doula support and advocacy during pregnancy, birth, and postpartum have also been linked to reduced cesarean deliveries, prematurity, and the likelihood of postpartum depression. For this reason, 84% of U.S. states are either actively providing Medicaid coverage for doula care, in the process of implementing coverage or are taking some statewide action adjacent to Medicaid coverage for doula care.
HelloDoula, a B2B2C, aims to supplement Medicaid's efforts by building infrastructure for a doula care benefit for an audience they currently aren't serving – the 55% of the U.S. population with employment-based health insurance coverage.
We are excited for this impact to go beyond our communities and set the stage for a global change, as the maternal mortality crisis is not unique to the U.S. With the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 3 in mind, aiming to ensure health and well-being for everyone, our mission aligns perfectly. We're out to prove that responsible AI can be the driving force behind a revolution in healthcare. This isn't just about tackling a problem; it's about ensuring that every expectant mother gets the support and care she deserves, no matter where she's from. We're determined to be the catalyst for change, and we're ready to make a difference - not just in our communities but across the globe.
HelloDoula is a SaaS product and employer benefit that serves as an all-in-one platform connecting families with high-quality, diverse doula care. It encompasses several key components, all working together to make the pregnancy and childbirth experience as smooth and empowering as possible for both expectant families and the doulas serving them.
What it does
Personalized Doula Matching: It matches expecting families with the ideal doula based on their preferences and needs. Think of it as an intelligent matchmaking system that ensures compatibility between families and their doula caregivers.
AI-Powered Support: It features an AI-powered assistant that offers personalized guidance, education, and emotional support throughout the entire pregnancy journey. It's like having a knowledgeable friend available 24/7 to answer nonclinical questions and empower you throughout pregnancy.
Employer Benefits: We'll integrate a health benefit designed for employers to provide expecting workers and their families with financial support throughout their pregnancy.
Marketing Channel for Doulas: For doula providers, HelloDoula serves as a marketing channel, helping them connect with a diverse client base and grow their businesses. This is particularly important as many doulas struggle to earn a livable wage.
Streamlined Transaction Management: The platform also manages service transactions and reimbursements, simplifying the administrative process for families and doula caregivers.
How it works:
Employers offer doula care benefits to their employees through HelloDoula.
Expecting families at employers sign up on HelloDoula and fill out their profile and birthing needs.
The AI-powered system matches the expecting family with doulas who best fits their requirements. Doulas will be available on the platform to connect with the families and offer services.
Throughout the pregnancy journey, the AI assistant offers guidance, education, and emotional support to families via text.
All transactions and reimbursements are handled seamlessly through the platform for the doula.
Technology Used:
HelloDoula leverages AI technology for personalized matching, 24/7 support, and data management. The platform is accessible via a website, ensuring families and doula providers can easily connect and collaborate to create a positive and healthy birthing experience.
The target population for HelloDoula are expectant mothers and their families. This includes women of all backgrounds but with a specific emphasis on underserved communities that are most at risk (such as black, brown, and indigenous people) and locations with maternal deserts. By addressing the current gaps in care and support, our solution seeks to directly and meaningfully improve the lives of expecting families, reduce maternal mortality rates, and mitigate the impact of healthcare disparities.
Ways in which they are currently underserved:
- Limited Access to Quality Care: In the U.S., an average of two women die every day from complications of pregnancy and childbirth, and two babies die every hour. There needs to be improved access to high-quality and comprehensive maternity care. Although doulas are non-clinically trained professionals, studies show that continuous, one-to-one support during labor, such as that provided by a doula, is associated with a
decrease in the use of medical interventions during the birth process.
- Financial Barriers: The cost of doula care and other support services can be a significant barrier for many families, preventing them from accessing the care and support they need. Creating a health benefit that employees can access during the childbearing years is essential when considering the health implications of receiving good maternal care, and that is what HelloDoula aims to provide.
- Racial and Socioeconomic Disparities: About 1 in 5 women report feeling mistreated while receiving maternity care, and nearly a third face discrimination, according to a new report from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The negative experiences are even more common for Black, Hispanic, and multiracial mothers: About 30% of Black and Hispanic mothers reported mistreatment during maternity care, and about 40% reported discrimination. HelloDoula AI matching system aims to provide every mother with personalized support that fits their needs.
How the solution addresses and prioritizes patient needs:
- Personalization: HelloDoula ensures that each expectant mother and family receives personalized support. The platform's AI matches them with a doula who aligns with their preferences, cultural background, and needs. This customized approach is central to addressing the unique needs of each patient.
- 24/7 Support: The AI-powered assistant provides round-the-clock nonclinical guidance, education, and emotional support. This availability addresses the unpredictability of pregnancy and childbirth and prioritizes the immediate needs of the patient, arming them with the support they need outside of the clinical setting.
- Affordability: Our B2B2C solution empowers employers to be part of the solution by making doula care and support accessible. Organizations like Walmart have introduced doula services to employees in a pilot program in four states — Georgia, Louisiana, Indiana, and Illinois — and as of October 2023 expanded their doula services benefit nationwide, proving a clear need and gap.
- Cultural Congruence: HelloDoula emphasizes the importance of culturally congruent care. By connecting families with doulas who share their cultural background and understanding, we ensure that patient's cultural needs and sensitivities are acknowledged and respected.
HelloDoula was established with a deep-rooted commitment to women's health and an unwavering dedication to addressing the alarming rise in maternal mortality rates in the United States, particularly within underserved communities. As women of color hailing from immigrant backgrounds, we co-founded this organization with the stark awareness that, regardless of our educational and professional accomplishments, we are not immune to the risks posed by this crisis.
We bring to HelloDoula over two decades of collective experience, including executive corporate roles in strategy, product development, community building, content creation, and human resources. We also served on boards with organizations like Doula for Everyone and Women's Health Magazine.
Our Team Lead, Co-Founder, and CEO, Ariel Belgrave, embarked on a purposeful transition from the corporate world to delve deeper into women's health. Since her departure from Meta in 2020, she has successfully bootstrapped and built a million-dollar health and wellness business. Ariel is a renowned health and fitness expert, executive wellness coach, and corporate wellness consultant known for her L.E.A.N Method that empowers women worldwide with sustainable health habits. Her work has gained recognition on platforms like Good Morning America and The Today Show, and she has collaborated with leading corporate companies to design wellness programs for women leaders.
Our Co-Founder and Chief Strategy & Operations Officer, Kati Fernandez, has a history of creating content and launching businesses, initially at Hulu and now at ESPN, all while championing women's rights and equality. She's consistently utilized her platforms to advance women's rights.
In our journey to build HelloDoula, we have actively engaged with the communities we aim to serve. This has included spending intimate time with birthing families, benefit providers, and community doulas, whose feedback has been instrumental in shaping our platform's prototype, design, and offerings. Our close proximity to these communities, both personally and professionally, positions us to better understand their needs and launch a solution that addresses the gaps in maternal health services.
Our team is also deeply intentional about our community partnerships. This is exemplified in our collaboration with a black-owned research and storytelling company specializing in design and digital products for the HelloDoula prototype.
- Creating and streamlining human-centered processes for delivering, providing equitable access to, managing and paying for healthcare.
- Creating user-friendly interfaces to improve communication between experts and patients, including providing better information, results, and reminders.
- Concept: An idea for building a product, service, or business model that is being explored for implementation
- Business Model (e.g. product-market fit, strategy & development)
- Human Capital (e.g. sourcing talent, board development)
- Product / Service Distribution (e.g. delivery, logistics, expanding client base)
- Technology (e.g. software or hardware, web development/design)
Our solution represents a paradigm shift in how doula care is accessed and provided. By leveraging technology, emphasizing diversity and inclusivity, and generating data-driven insights, we have the potential to catalyze positive impacts across the maternal healthcare space.
Here's how our approach stands out:
- Personalized Matchmaking: We are developing the first platform that uses AI algorithms to match birthing families with doulas based on their specific needs, preferences, and cultural backgrounds. This personalized matchmaking ensures that each family receives tailored support, a huge improvement over the manual and limiting doula matching methods we see today.
- Diversity and Inclusion: We are committed to building a more diverse network of doulas, as over 80% of doulas in the U.S. are white and mainly limited to women with higher incomes who can afford to pay for doula services out-of-pocket. For many birthing families in underserved communities, having a doula who looks like them, shares their cultural background, or understands their values and traditions can create a sense of trust and comfort. Doulas who speak the same language as their clients can bridge communication gaps and ensure that families receive clear information and support during a critical period. This can lead to a stronger connection between the doula and the family, resulting in better emotional and psychological support during pregnancy and childbirth.
- Data-Driven Insights: Our platform will collect data on the effectiveness of doula care, which can be used to identify trends, best practices, and areas for improvement. This data-driven approach can catalyze broader positive impacts by providing valuable insights to healthcare providers, policymakers, and researchers working to reduce maternal mortality rates.
- Accessibility: By providing a digital and AI platform, we aim to make doula care and education more accessible to a broader range of families. This approach can change the market by democratizing access to quality doula services, making them available to a broader demographic, and, in turn, driving the adoption of doula care as an integral part of the maternal healthcare system.
- Scalability: Our SaaS model has the potential to reach a large number of birthing families across the US. As the platform grows, it could set a new standard for maternal care, encouraging other players to adopt similar technological solutions and focus on diversity and personalized care.
HelloDoula addresses UN Sustainable Development Goal 3 for Good Health and Well-Being by directly contributing to improving maternal health and well-being for expectant mothers and families.
Here's how our solution aligns with and supports this goal:
Reducing Maternal Mortality: Sustainable Development Goal 3 aims to reduce the global maternal mortality ratio. HelloDoula is critical in achieving this goal by providing personalized support and access to quality doula care.
Improving Maternal Health: Our solution promotes good health for expectant mothers by offering continuous and tailored support throughout pregnancy and postpartum. This includes guidance, education, and emotional support, which are essential components of ensuring the well-being of pregnant individuals and the reduction of postpartum depression.
Reducing Health Disparities: HelloDoula addresses healthcare disparities, especially for underserved communities and people of color. By providing culturally congruent care and support, our solution aims to reduce racial and socioeconomic disparities in maternal healthcare, aligning with the SDG's principle of leaving no one behind.
Promoting Mental Well-Being: Maternal health goes beyond physical well-being. HelloDoula's AI-powered support system offers emotional assistance, reducing anxiety, depression, and stress during pregnancy. This not only contributes to good health but also enhances the overall well-being of expectant mothers.
Accessible and Affordable Care: HelloDoula's B2B2C model provides financial access to doula care. This affordability ensures that more individuals can benefit from the support they need during pregnancy, furthering the goal of universal access to healthcare services.
Community-Centered Approach: We actively engage and involve the communities we serve in co-creating our solution. This community-driven approach ensures that HelloDoula is shaped by the input, ideas, and needs of the target population, thus promoting well-being and healthy lives according to SDG 3.
Our commitment to data quality and curation ensures that our AI-driven platform provides accurate, personalized, and trustworthy support to expectant mothers and families.
AI Components:
Personalized Doula Matching System: Our AI system uses algorithms to match expectant mothers and families with the most suitable doulas based on various factors, including geographical location, preferences, cultural background, and previous user interactions. This matching system ensures that each user receives the most relevant and supportive doula care.
AI-Powered Assistant: HelloDoula's 365-day AI-powered assistant provides continuous support to users. It uses natural language processing (NLP) and machine learning to offer personalized guidance, answer questions, and offer emotional support throughout the pregnancy and postpartum journey.
Data Analytics and Insights: We collect and analyze data from user interactions and feedback to gain insights into the effectiveness of our platform. This allows us to continually improve and customize the user experience and make data-driven decisions for feature enhancements.
Underlying Data:
User Data: HelloDoula collects and securely stores user data, such as user profiles, preferences, and interactions with the platform. This data helps us understand the unique needs and preferences of each user, enabling personalized support and matching.
Diverse Doula Database: We maintain a comprehensive database of various doula providers, including their qualifications, areas of expertise, and cultural backgrounds. This data is critical for the personalized doula matching process.
Cultural Sensitivity Data: To provide culturally congruent care, we incorporate data on cultural norms, practices, and healthcare beliefs from various communities. This data helps our AI assistant provide culturally sensitive guidance and support.
Conversational Data: All interactions between users and the AI assistant are logged and analyzed. This data helps us understand the evolving needs and emotions of patients, enabling us to offer more relevant support over time.
Healthcare Guidelines and Research: We integrate medical and healthcare guidelines into our AI systems, ensuring that our support and guidance are evidence-based and align with best practices within the guidelines of a doula's role.
Acquiring Good, Curated Data:
User-Generated Data: User profiles and conversational data are collected directly from platform users. By encouraging detailed profiles and actively engaging users with the AI assistant, we ensure the data is up-to-date and specific to the needs of our users.
Doula Verification: Doula profiles are verified and curated to ensure accuracy. Doula providers must meet specific criteria and undergo a validation process to be listed on our platform.
Data Privacy: We prioritize data privacy and security. User consent and data protection measures are implemented to safeguard the data we collect.
Feedback Mechanisms: We actively seek user feedback to improve data quality. Users can rate doula providers and report issues, allowing us to maintain a curated list of high-quality doulas to refine our matching and support algorithms.
External Data Sources: We also consider incorporating external data sources, such as medical databases and research studies, to enrich the knowledge base of our AI assistant and ensure the provision of evidence-based information.
We acknowledge the importance of addressing and mitigating potential risks associated with AI technology, particularly within the healthcare sector and the sensitive user data we handle. As we transition from the concept stage to the execution stage, we will implement proactive risk assessment and mitigation measures to ensure our operations align with our mission of providing meaningful and responsible support to expectant mothers, their families, and the employers we serve.
Here are the steps we will take to uphold ethical standards and mitigate risks:
Privacy and Security:
Data Encryption: Robust encryption methods will protect user data, ensuring its security in transit and at rest.
Access Controls: Access to sensitive data will be strictly limited to authorized personnel.
Regular Audits: We will conduct security and vulnerability assessments to identify and address potential security risks.
Compliance: We will adhere to all relevant data protection laws, including HIPAA in the United States, to ensure the privacy and security of healthcare information.

Pilot Programs and Regional Focus: Our primary objective is to launch pilot programs in regions with the most significant healthcare disparities. By partnering with employers such as Sonic, Target, General Motors, Walgreens, CVS Health, and others, we can strategically focus on areas where our platform can have the most impact, benefiting both employees and birthing families.
Next Five Years (5-Year Impact Goals):
National Expansion: Over the next five years, HelloDoula envisions substantial growth and a transformation of maternal healthcare in the United States. We are determined to expand our reach to serve expectant mothers and families in all 50 states through employer partnerships.

1. Leadership Team Diversity:
Our leadership team is intentionally diverse, reflecting different backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives.
2. Team Diversity and Equity:
We actively seek team members from diverse backgrounds to ensure that our collective expertise is representative of the populations we serve. This diversity strengthens our ability to understand and address unique needs and disparities.
3. Cultural Competency:
We are committed to fostering cultural competency within our team. This includes ongoing education and training on the cultural norms, healthcare practices, and sensitivities of the communities we serve.
4. Community Engagement:
We actively engage with community organizations, healthcare providers, and doula associations. These partnerships help us maintain a deep understanding of the communities we serve and ensure that our platform aligns with their needs.
5. Accessibility and Affordability:
We work to make doula care more accessible and affordable. By collaborating with employers and insurance providers, we aim to reduce financial barriers and promote equitable access to these essential services.
6. Inclusivity in AI Design:
We ensure that our AI algorithms are developed and tested with diverse datasets and user input to minimize bias and discrimination. We regularly assess and address any potential biases that may arise.
7. Policy Advocacy:
We actively engage in policy advocacy to promote policies that support diversity, equity, and inclusivity in healthcare, including doula care coverage for underserved communities.
HelloDoula operates with a dedicated, diverse team passionately committed to addressing maternal healthcare disparities. With a diverse team of women of color founders, we bring a wealth of lived experiences and professional backgrounds, fostering a purposeful approach in forming partnerships that reflect the communities we aim to serve. For instance, our creative partners in prototyping HelloDoula represent a black-owned research, strategy, and innovative storytelling company specializing in design and digital products.
Incorporating employers into our mission is pivotal for expanding our client pool of birthing parents and making a significant impact. Our strategy includes identifying like-minded employer partners who value maternal healthcare and family-friendly benefits, customizing benefit packages to align with their unique needs and resources, and piloting our platform with 1-2 mission-aligned employers in 2024. These pilots will serve as models, demonstrating HelloDoula's ability to improve employee satisfaction, reduce stress among expectant parents, and potentially lower healthcare costs. Data-driven results will showcase the platform's value to other potential employer partners, while employee engagement, collaborative partnerships, and advocacy efforts will further strengthen these relationships.
Equally critical is the establishment of relationships and collaborations with doulas. This involves partnerships with doula training organizations and community-based doulas:
Partnerships with Doula Training Organizations: We will form strategic partnerships with established doula training organizations, integrating HelloDoula into their certification process. This ensures certified doulas are well-prepared to offer high-quality support to expectant parents.
Community-Based Doula Partnerships: Collaboration with community-based doulas, deeply connected to their communities, will ensure HelloDoula's services are culturally sensitive and aligned with diverse population needs.
Doula Directory Development: Our goal is to create a robust doula directory, offering a diverse and comprehensive range of doulas within the HelloDoula platform.
AI-Powered Matching Program: HelloDoula's AI-powered software will effectively pair doulas with expectant parents based on their unique preferences and needs.
Doula Support and Training: We are dedicated to providing ongoing support and training to doulas within our network, further enhancing their skills and knowledge.
Doula Advocacy and Empowerment: HelloDoula not only matches doulas with parents but also empowers them and advocates for their recognition and value within the healthcare system.
Feedback and Continuous Improvement: Collaboration with doulas and doula training organizations fosters an open feedback loop, crucial for refining our platform and services to better meet the needs of both doulas and expectant parents.
These collaborations with doula training organizations and community-based doulas ensure a diverse, qualified, and supportive network of doulas. This is fundamental in achieving our mission of effectively pairing doulas with expectant parents, providing them with the care and support they need during their pregnancy and childbirth journey.
To fund our mission and work at HelloDoula, we've developed a multifaceted approach to generate revenue while ensuring our services remain accessible and equitable. Here's how we plan to bring in money:
Employer Partnerships:
As part of our strategy to onboard employers, we will establish partnerships with organizations that recognize the value of doula care. Employers can choose to cover the costs of HelloDoula's services as an employee benefit. This not only benefits their workforce but also provides a source of revenue for HelloDoula.
Transaction Fee for Implementing Matching:
Doulas who are part of the HelloDoula network can be charged a nominal transaction fee for each successful match or engagement with an expectant parent. This fee could be a percentage of the total cost paid by the employers. This fee can cover the administrative costs of matching doulas with parents, ensuring a seamless and personalized experience.
Grants and Philanthropic Funding:
We will actively seek grants and philanthropic funding from foundations, organizations, and individuals who support our mission to improve maternal healthcare and reduce disparities. Grants and donations will play a vital role in sustaining our operations and expanding our product development and reach.
Data Insights and Research:
HelloDoula can generate revenue by providing anonymized, aggregated data insights and research findings to healthcare institutions, researchers, and policymakers. These insights can help improve maternal healthcare practices and address disparities.
Affiliate Partnerships:
Partnering with organizations that align with our mission, such as companies offering maternity and baby-related products, can result in affiliate marketing opportunities. When our users make purchases through these partnerships, HelloDoula earns a commission, creating a passive income stream.
Sponsorships and Advertising:
In some cases, we may consider sponsorships and advertising opportunities with organizations that share our values and mission. This can include organizations looking to promote maternal health-related products and services.
By diversifying our revenue streams and balancing income-generating activities with our commitment to accessibility and equity, HelloDoula aims to fund our work sustainably. This multifaceted approach allows us to provide high-quality doula care while addressing maternal healthcare disparities in underserved communities.
As we are in the concept stage, our operating costs primarily focus on the critical phases of product design, business operations, and development. These costs are essential in building a robust and effective platform to deliver on our mission to improve maternal healthcare. As of now, our financial focus is on these key areas, and we are working diligently to optimize our budget.
Product Design (Approximately $15,000):
Most of our operating budget is allocated to the product design phase. This phase involves creating the user interface, user experience, and overall design of the HelloDoula platform. Innovation is pivotal in ensuring the platform is user-friendly, accessible, and aligned with the needs and preferences of both doulas and expectant parents.
Platform Development (Approximately $120,000, subject to estimates):
The bulk of our operating costs are directed towards the development of the HelloDoula platform. This involves building the software, implementing features, ensuring security, and making the platform fully functional. The estimated cost is around $120,000, though we seek estimates from multiple trusted partners and potential organizations to ensure cost-efficiency and high-quality development.
Business Operations (Approximately $10,000):
Beyond product design and platform development, we recognize the importance of creating an infrastructure for HelloDoula. These expenses cover administrative and legal costs, professional services, and more that will help establish us as a legitimate organization. Allocating resources to business operations is critical to ensuring long-term sustainability and growth.
We have kept our overhead costs low, and both co-founders are not drawing a salary at this stage. This cost-saving measure allows us to direct a significant portion of our budget towards the core development of the platform. We aim to build the software and venue in the coming year fully. This milestone is crucial as it will enable us to confidently approach partnerships, both on the employer and doula organization side. A fully functional platform will not only demonstrate the value and feasibility of our solution but also provide a tangible service that employers and doula organizations can integrate into their programs and offerings.
In our grant application for 2024, we are seeking funding at the maximum limit of $100,000. We have carefully selected this amount based on our budgetary needs and the critical initiatives we aim to undertake in the upcoming year.
Here's how we arrived at the decision to request $100,000:
Budget for 2024:
As outlined in our operating costs, we have allocated a significant portion of our budget to product design and platform development. The estimated cost for platform development alone is approximately $100,000+. This financial support is crucial to ensure the successful and timely completion of the platform.
Strategic Initiatives:
In 2024, we plan to pilot and test our platform with 1-2 employers, expand our partnerships with doula training organizations, and actively engage in doula advocacy efforts. These initiatives require financial resources to execute effectively, which our team is happy to take on.
Impact and Sustainability:
Securing the maximum grant amount of $100,000 will not only allow us to continue our work but also position us for a more significant impact. It will enable us to fully develop the HelloDoula platform and seek partnerships with employers and doula organizations, ultimately making a more substantial and sustainable difference in maternal healthcare.
We will use this funding for platform development, and ultimately, it will help us trigger the rest:
Pilot Programs: Pilot programs with 1-2 employers, demonstrating the value of HelloDoula within the workplace. Through our professional relationships, we can bring on brand partners.
Doula Training Integration: We will invest in the integration of HelloDoula into doula training organizations and support doulas through this partnership.
Doula Advocacy and Outreach: We will take on doula advocacy efforts and raise awareness about the importance of doula care.
Operational Expenses: We will maintain and cover operating costs for running the organization, including marketing, outreach, and administration.
Overall, the $100,000 grant will be instrumental in achieving our goals of developing our platform, protecting and expanding our impact, and contributing to improving maternal healthcare for underserved communities. We have thoughtfully considered this amount to ensure we can continue our mission effectively and make a substantial difference in 2024.

Many of these partners are already supportive of robust family and maternity benefits. These connections will help us expand our reach and grow HelloDoula, ensuring our mission to provide accessible doula care reaches a broader audience.
Among these opportunities, we are most excited about the mentorship and educational programming components. These elements align perfectly with our commitment to continuously improve and learn as co-founders. They will empower us with the tools, insights, and knowledge needed to further develop HelloDoula and drive meaningful change in maternal healthcare.
Overall, the Cure Residency offers a holistic support structure that not only addresses our immediate needs but also fosters long-term growth and success. We are excited about the potential of this opportunity to significantly advance our work and make a lasting impact in the maternal healthcare space, and we believe it has the potential to be truly life-changing for us as founders and for the communities we aim to serve.
