A way to address lack of ergonomic surgical training for surgical residents to promote career longevity
AI driven real-time posture feedback tool for surgeons, residents and residents to monitor their posture during learning phase and fixing posture related issues at earlier stage.
This is an app based tool that utilizes phone/ipad/table/laptop camera live to give feedback to surgeons when they learn to do a specific surgical task to posture their bodies better.
This uses Open sourced image/body coordinates to calculate the musculoskeletal disorder scores with visual feedback.
Every year hospitals loose an estimated 15 Million USD due to surgeon absence contributed by MSD in surgeons. This is a downside estimate with general surgeons at center; specializations like neurosurgery are more expensive (for the hospital) and with years of experience, however show worrying trends of surgeons quitting much earlier.
there is also data that shows that poor operating ergonomics and surgeons' prolonged exposure to it affects the procedure recommended to patient and hence the patient outcome.
The current tools include microbreaks and "mindfulness"
While redesigning ORs or surgical tools may be a solutions, its a low hanging fruit that is costly for the already poor learning curve of hospital staff and does little to eliminate the fact that surgeries are collaborative processes and everyone is wildly a different height.
In summary, one robust solution is to target the muscle memory of surgeons to position themselves best the OR.
team consists of graduate students in biomedical engineering with training in AI, human centered design, at columbia university and team of surgical residents at NY Presbytarian.
- Developing and refining models that use high-quality data to predict and personalize a person’s future health risks with plans to prevent or reduce these risks.
- Creating and streamlining human-centered processes for delivering, providing equitable access to, managing and paying for healthcare.
- Prototype: A venture or organization building and testing its product, service, or business model, but which is not yet serving anyone
- Human Capital (e.g. sourcing talent, board development)
- Monitoring & Evaluation (e.g. collecting/using data, measuring impact)
- Technology (e.g. software or hardware, web development/design)
