The Saturday School is an arts-integrated beyond-school lab on a mission to impact high-need regions with k-12 educational gaps.
Problem Statement:
The problem at hand is the significant educational disparity in reading proficiency among students in California, particularly in Black and Brown communities. The data reveals that a disproportionate number of students, approximately 48% of elementary, 61% of middle school, and 52% of high school students, struggle with reading below grade level. This disparity highlights the urgent need for innovative interventions that go beyond traditional school settings to address the gaps in education.
The Challenge: The consequences of low reading proficiency have far-reaching implications beyond academic performance. In Black and Brown communities, these disparities contribute to perpetuating the school-to-prison pipeline, limiting opportunities, and reinforcing systemic inequities. Urgent intervention is necessary to disrupt this cycle and create pathways toward brighter futures for these students.
Objective: By implementing innovative interventions that target reading proficiency and address systemic inequities, we aim to break the cycle of educational disparity and pave the way for academic success, socio-economic mobility, and social justice for students in Black and Brown communities.
Significance: The urgent need to address the gaps in education is crucial for creating a more equitable society. By focusing on innovative interventions beyond traditional school settings, we can provide tailored support, empower students to overcome educational disparities, and open doors to opportunities that will positively impact their futures.
By recognizing the pressing challenge of low reading proficiency and its disproportionate impact on Black and Brown communities, we can work towards implementing effective solutions that improve academic outcomes, disrupt systemic inequities, and foster a brighter future for all students.

Discrete intensive literacy interventions are implemented, offering personalized instruction and support to enhance students' reading proficiency. These interventions focus on specific areas of improvement, empowering students to catch up to grade level and build a strong foundation for future success.
3. Family Engagement: The Hoop of Harmony method places great importance on family engagement as a catalyst for student achievement. The Saturday School establishes a supportive network that nurtures students' educational growth by actively involving parents and families. Workshops, resources, and collaborative opportunities are offered to empower parents to play an active role in their child's learning journey, creating a shared commitment to educational excellence.
4. Safe Learning Zones in Non-Traditional Spaces: The Hoop of Harmony method recognizes the value of utilizing non-traditional school spaces as "safe learning zones" within local communities. By transforming community spaces, such as libraries, community centers, and cultural institutions, into vibrant learning environments, The Saturday School provides accessible and inclusive learning opportunities. These safe learning zones create an environment where students and families feel comfortable exploring and discovering knowledge, fostering a sense of belonging, curiosity, and engagement.
Implementing the Hoop of Harmony method and utilizing non-traditional school spaces as safe learning zones, The Saturday School opens new doors for students and families to experience education beyond traditional classrooms. This approach promotes creativity, critical thinking, and cultural enrichment while nurturing strong family bonds and community connections. Foundational:
Our research approach included conducting extensive literature reviews and comprehensive desktop research to gain valuable insights into the challenges faced by our students and the existing approaches used to address them.
Through literature reviews, we delved into academic papers, industry reports, and other relevant publications to understand the existing knowledge related to our solution's domain. This process allowed us to identify gaps in current solutions and develop a unique approach to solving our students' educational challenges.
Additionally, we conducted comprehensive desktop research to gather data and statistics specific to the problem we aimed to solve. This research involved analyzing publicly available datasets, reports, and case studies that provided us with a deeper understanding of the extent of the issue and its impact on our students and other stakeholders.
The research and studies at The Saturday School have provided valuable insights into our solution and significantly informed our work moving forward. Our findings have shed light on the prevalent issue of literacy, not only in California or the United States but as a global-wide concern. We have recognized that literacy is a costly problem that disproportionately impacts communities of color and low-income communities.
One key revelation from our research is the existence of numerous "literacy" solutions available in the market. However, despite these options, the gaps in formal education persist, and none of the existing solutions are closing these gaps fast enough. This realization has emphasized the need for additional approaches beyond traditional classroom settings to address the educational disparities and effectively enhance literacy skills.
Our research has highlighted the significance of after-school options as viable solutions for closing educational gaps. By offering supplementary education programs outside regular school hours, we can provide targeted support and personalized instruction to students most need it. This understanding has reinforced our commitment to the mission of Saturday School and inspired us to develop comprehensive and accessible after-school programs that focus on literacy improvement.
Furthermore, our research has emphasized the scalability and repeatability of our work. Literacy is a universal challenge, transcending geographic boundaries and language barriers. Recognizing this, we have positioned our solution to be adaptable across subjects, languages, and lands. This approach allows us to effectively address literacy gaps within local communities and on a broader scale, ultimately contributing to a global effort to improve literacy rates.
The insights gained from our research have played a pivotal role in shaping our work moving forward. They have fueled our determination to create innovative educational programs that are tailored to the specific needs of communities disproportionately affected by literacy challenges. We have used this knowledge to develop the Hoop of Harmony strategy as an intervention that hopes to be evidence-based, culturally responsive, and inclusive.
One key reason for strengthening the evidence base of our solution is the pervasive nature of the literacy issue. Literacy is a prevalent problem in California, the United States, and across the world. To address such a complex challenge, we must continually gather data and research findings to inform our approach and adapt our programs to diverse contexts.
Additionally, literacy is a multifaceted problem that disproportionately impacts communities of color and low-income communities. Strengthening the evidence base allows us to understand better the specific needs and challenges faced by these communities. By conducting further research, we can identify effective strategies to address the unique barriers they encounter and tailor our programs accordingly.
Furthermore, while numerous "literacy" solutions are available, the gaps in formal education persist, and progress in closing these gaps remains slow. By strengthening the evidence base, we can evaluate the effectiveness of our programs and method to determine how they contribute to bridging these gaps. This continuous evaluation and improvement process ensures that our efforts are focused on outcomes and that we can provide tangible evidence of our solution's impact.
Another crucial aspect is the cost-effectiveness of our solution. As literacy is a costly problem to tackle, it is essential for us to demonstrate the cost-effectiveness of our programs. By strengthening the evidence base, we can assess the return on investment of our interventions, measure the long-term benefits for the students and communities we serve, and make informed decisions about resource allocation and program expansion.
Moreover, as we aim to develop scalable and repeatable solutions, it is imperative to gather strong evidence to support our scaling efforts. Strengthening the evidence base allows us to evaluate the scalability and replicability of our programs across subjects, languages, and different geographical locations. It helps us identify best practices, refine our approaches, and ensure that the quality of our programs is maintained as we expand our reach.
In summary, the need to strengthen the evidence base of our solution at Saturday School is driven by the pervasive nature of the literacy issue, the disproportionate impact on marginalized communities, the slow progress in closing gaps, the cost-effectiveness of our interventions, and our goal to develop scalable and repeatable programs. By continuously conducting research, evaluating outcomes, and gathering data, we can refine and improve our programs, address the specific needs of different communities, and demonstrate the effectiveness and impact of our solution.
