SCHOOL CINEMA - Film-based program that supports Life Skills & SEL among students & educators.
All schools and education systems realize the importance of Life Skills, Social Emotional Learning (SEL) & Mental well-being to be included as part of the schooling process. Conventional solutions and learning processes fail to effectively engage students and create an impact with learning.
School Cinema is a first-of-its-kind program in the world that introduced Film-Pedagogy as part of the school curriculum. It uses entertaining films and thought-provoking activities in the form of workbooks/digital LMS to support the development of Life Skills, SEL etc. The School Cinema-based life skills curriculum prepares children for the challenges and opportunities of adult life, promoting responsible, independent, and productive members of society.
School Cinema uses films to teach life lessons for students from Kindergarten through to Grade 10 (5-16 years of age)
School Cinema is introduced as part of the school curriculum. Students watch entertaining short films made on various themes like - gender bias, conflict, religious/cultural sensitivity etc. The school teacher/counselor who implements the program then leads a discussion and conversation around the film. The students then do the activities on the Cinema Workbook or digitally on LMS. Every class/grade has a 10 films on various issues that are developed based on the psycho-social development of students from Kindergarten to Grade 10.
Films are a great medium to teach as they combine storytelling + emotions + entertainment + audio/visual all together making it very impactful. Everyone loves watching films so the program is very popular with students & educators/parents alike.

Formative & Summative Research
Published in Internal Journals
Formative Research: Formative research is conducted during the development or implementation phase of a program to gather feedback, identify areas for improvement, and make necessary adjustments. Here are some examples of formative research that LXL Ideas conducted:
a. Focus Groups: LXL Ideas organized focus groups with students, educators, and parents to gather their perceptions, opinions, and suggestions related to the School Cinema program. This feedback helps identify strengths, weaknesses, and areas for improvement.
b. Pilot Studies: Prior to the full-scale implementation of School Cinema, LXL Ideas conducted pilot studies in select schools to assess the program's feasibility, acceptability, and potential impact. The feedback collected during these pilot studies informs adjustments to the program content, delivery methods, or support materials.
c. Surveys and Questionnaires: LXL Ideas administered surveys or questionnaires to gather quantitative data on participants' perceptions of the program, including their satisfaction levels, perceived benefits, and suggestions for improvement. This information helps shape program enhancements and modifications.
Summative Research: Summative research was conducted after the program implementation to evaluate its overall effectiveness and impact.
a. Pre- and Post-Assessments: LXL Ideas administered pre- and post-assessments to measure changes in students' social and emotional skills, academic performance, or behavior after participating in the School Cinema program.
b. Comparative Studies: LXL Ideas conducted comparative studies to compare the outcomes of students who participated in the School Cinema program with those who did not. This helps determine whether the program had a significant impact on targeted outcomes when compared to a control group.
c. Qualitative Interviews and Observations: LXL Ideas conducted qualitative research, such as interviews or observations, to gather in-depth insights into the experiences, perspectives, and changes observed among students, educators, and parents.
The School Cinema research showed that it is important to have quality value-based content for increasing the scope of learning. Specifically when it comes to instilling life skills and imparting values to empower adolescents to deal with concerns they face. Lack of trained manpower and over-emphasis on academics are the primary reasons why schools find it difficult to equip children with skills to handle life issues, which could range from a simple understanding of the value of telling the truth to deal with far more serious issues like bullying or academic stress.
The school cinema program is very effective not only with children but with teachers & parents as well. The schools are very happy with the overall impact of the School Cinema program and its components.
It was also found that 90% of students liked the Cinema book. Their overall experience of school cinema fell under the good, very good and excellent categories.
All the hypotheses for Self-Esteem, Conformity, Emotional Maturity and General well-being were supported by the results. The results state that movies shown to the experimental group brought a positive change in the levels of all four variables measured in the study.
The results of the Mann- Whitney U Test show that there is a significant difference in the pre and post-test. Thus the results of the study support the alternate hypothesis that ‘School Cinema has had a positive effect on Attitudes, Social intelligence and Emotional Maturity of the students’ stating that the post group have shown high levels of emotional maturity, social intelligence and positive attitude towards parents, peers, schools, society and life.
Participating in the LEAP project right now will be a good step as the program is scaling up exponentially. We are on track to have 1 Million+ students from 4-5 countries in the academic year 2023-24.
There is a big need to bring entertainment into education, School Cinema does that very effectively. School Cinema is both physical & digital, it can be implemented both in-school and online. It can be led by a facilitator or self paced learning. The model of School Cinema is relevant to students across the world and we hope to scale. In addition to Life Skills, SEL etc. the model of Film Pedagogy can be used to teach other topics as well in future.
With the current trends in education, participating in the LEAP project or similar research endeavors is necessary to fill knowledge gaps, and ensure continuous improvement. The timing may be advantageous due to increased interest, timely relevance, and technological advancements that facilitate research in the field of education.
The role of film in promoting cultural understanding and empathy among students in diverse classrooms
The ethical considerations of using films as a medium of education, including issues related to representation, bias, and cultural appropriation.
- Formative research (e.g. usability studies; feasibility studies; case studies; user interviews; implementation studies; pre-post or multi-measure research; correlational studies)
- Summative research (e.g. correlational studies; quasi-experimental studies; randomized control studies)
Prove the hypothesis that ‘School Cinema is an effective program to support Life Skills, SEL & Mental Wellbeing among students.’ and ‘Films are great tool to engage students’
School Cinema can use the research findings to create more targeted and effective films and content that caters to the specific needs of students. For instance, if the research shows that the program has a more significant impact on the emotional maturity of high school students than middle school students, the organization can develop more relevant content relatable to older students.
We can also use the research findings to develop teacher training programs that can help educators better understand the importance of emotional intelligence, social intelligence, and positive attitudes and how they can facilitate the development of these skills in students. Teachers can also be trained to use the School Cinema program more effectively in their classrooms.
Research findings can also be used to create parent engagement programs that help parents understand the importance of emotional intelligence, social intelligence, and positive attitudes in their children's development and how they can support their children in developing these skills. Resources can be created for parents to use at home, such as discussion guides and activities that complement the School Cinema program.
Overall, the School Cinema program aims to improve students' mental health and allow them to be strong, respectful and confident citizens.
