An all in one STEM learning kit to practice innovations with technology
Developing countries like Sri Lanka are in deep economic issues in the present world context. One of the main reasons behind this is the less effectiveness in the workforce related to the modern context. The country has less than 30% students following STEM for higher education while growing sectors like ICT are struggling with less workforce. Participation of girls in STEM is in the range of 20's among undergraduates. These factors need to be improved with wide accessibility and promotion of STEM from a younger age.
Practicing the technology innovations for STEM education has inherent problems for both students and educators. Innovation and creativity are two of the most required skills for the future generation specially with technology due to changing dynamics in the job market and the industry.
1. Current products or solutions doesn't cater students with different knowledge levels and capabilities
3. Difficulty in using hardware and software systems
3. Technical complexity
4. Cost of the devices (Specially in developing countries)
5. Have to buy different components for different applications
6. Doesn't guide students actually to innovate but rather replicate some projects
7. Cannot practice a range of technologies using the same product
8. Create future innovators to solve problems and achieve economic prosperity
9. Create future tech-entrepreneurs and job creators in the developing countries
There are few students in every class who are interested in technology innovations, the challenge now is to find ways to educate all students with these skills.
Magicbit is a versatile innovation platform with hardware, software, lessons as a complete learning kit for students to practice technical innovations in STEM education in the areas of programming, robotics, Internet of Things, electronics and Artificial Intelligence.
The goal is Magicbit learning kits are to educate all students equally with easy to use and cost effective education platform using activity based learning.
- Primary school children (ages 5-12)
- Poor
- Low-Income
- Middle-Income
- Level 1: You can describe what you do and why it matters, logically, coherently and convincingly.
Foundational research : We have conducted initial research with students teachers and literature to understand the needs, gaps and the impact.
Formative research We have done user surveys, interviews, pilot feedbacks, workshops to understand the effectiveness of the learning kits.
We have learnt that our product has over all positive feedback and impact on students but there are a lot of areas to improve on usability, student expectation and easiness.
We do monthly student survey's to measure our work and incorporate the changes to product as monthly releases to make the solution batter.
As the learning platform is made with community feedback we observe an improvement in the feedback.
However there are non engaging and users who not consistently use the platform. We are trying understand the ways we can increase the effectiveness and usability of the STEM learning kits.
We have been working on this solution to strengthen the STEM education sector in Sri Lanka since 2019. Our initial platform was launched in 2021 and now the user base is growing. In 2023 we were involved in convincing the government to include STEM as part of the curriculum. Now we need more researched approach to make the solution comprehensive.
1. What are the bottlenecks in adopting STEM learning solution-Magicbit ?
2. What are the evaluation criteria for effectiveness of a Magicbit STEM product?
3. Why is the Magicbit platform has become successful in introducing innovation with technology for learners?
- Formative research (e.g. usability studies; feasibility studies; case studies; user interviews; implementation studies; pre-post or multi-measure research; correlational studies)
Magicbit platform has a user base of 4000+ in Sri Lanka and this number is growing. We hope more scientific approach to identify the gap between user expectations and solution is the key to improve the product. This will help to improve the mass adoption of STEM in the country among students and teachers.
We are on a constant mission to improve the Magicbit platform to meet the learning objectives. Therefore we are ready and capable of changing the products and learning programs according to the findings of the research.
Short term outcomes: Change the product as per end user expectation within next 6 months and release the new version.
Long term outcomes: Establish a framework to continuously measure the outcomes of the learning experience
