Developing an Electronic Library for Kindergarten and Primary Schools Project will focus on establishing the DEKP Library as a solution
This solution seeks to solve the problem of learning difficulty among children in kindergarten and primary schools. Children between the ages of 3 and 12 years often have a problem in understanding learning materials due to differences in study time, understanding methods. Some children cannot understand video content and others cannot understand paper based content. Some understand audio based content and others understand video. However there is a shortage of online based materials that can lead to proper distribution of learning resources among children; In Uganda, it is very hard to find an electronic library for children and so children are often left struggling to read paper based content despite conditions such as disabilities like autism, blindness, deafness, down syndrome. The worst scenario is that the E-Content offered by available downloading platforms isn’t filtered, this is a danger to children who are bound to download adult related content in this generalized platform. This solution wants to establish a specialized electronic library for children that will solve all the above problems and render mental safety for Ugandan children and those in other parts of the world. Parents and teachers will also be able to use these platforms for solving homework problems and setting exams as well as learning during lessons.
An Electronic Library full of various information materials (E-Books, audio books, videos etc) will be established online by tastethewrite. This library will have child based specialized content and will be free from online adverts. In this platform, parents, teachers, guardians, and children who have computer knowledge will be able to download E-Content at a cheap or free cost. At the end of the say, an autistic and deaf child is able to access a video and understand, a blind child is able to access an audio and understand. A child who is slow at understanding paperbased content will understand an E-book.
- Pre-primary age children (ages 2-5)
- Primary school children (ages 5-12)
- Level 2: You capture data that shows positive change, but you cannot confirm you caused this.
The team leader is a guardian to two autistic nephews, 3 and 9 years who can not understand in class but rather find it easy to understand video content and facilitate their learning.
tastethewrite conducted research among 6 parents with children with disabilities. One autistic child found it difficult to read words on paper but rather preferred to watch videos have words to understand. Another parent had a daughter whose performance was bad but when learning videos from google play were used as an alternative, her performance became better. The four remaining parents had blind children who were still struggling to adopt reading braille printed content because in primary school they aren’t exposed to audio based learning methods. The children confessed that they would prefer audio.
Since the DEKP library will contain video, audio-visual materials, as well E-Books that will offer a solution to all the above.
The research studies conducted revealed that the solution is viable. In the Library, parents and teachers will be able to access content in all formats to use during learning; each child will be equally treated with the content that they can understand better. Parents will be able to use the content for home schooling since they are highly interested and the content will be a form of reference for home work, drawing, etc.
After discovering parents’ concerns, and matching with the needs that E-Library will solve, tastethewrite got to know that there is an urgent need to establish the DEKP Library.
There is need for urgent action in solving the problems children between the ages of 3 and 12 face in knowledge acquisition. Time flies and so do children grow. It is easy for a child to understand when she is young than when she is old. Scientists have often confirmed that young children understand better due to a still developing pre-frontal cortex that is highly flexible for learning. tastethewrite therefore focuses on ensuring that through equitable information distribution, that is the electronic library, children learn faster to avoid slow understanding when they grow. Furthermore there is need to cater for those with disabilities in order to enable them catch up with the normal children
What are the problems that children face while trying to understand content in Kindergarten and Primary Schools?
What are the alternatives to paper based learning methods in Kindergarten and Primary Schools?
How can children with disabilities understand better in school?
- Formative research (e.g. usability studies; feasibility studies; case studies; user interviews; implementation studies; pre-post or multi-measure research; correlational studies)
- Research will be conducted among teachers and parents to find out further details about learning disabilities among children between 3 and 12 years.
- Content will be matched according to the primary schools syllabus.
- An E-Library will be established with the various study content in different formats. The content will either be free or of a low price. The DEKP Library will offer provisions for parents and teachers to subscribe to content
tastethewrite will consult government officials on the need to set up an electronic library for schools at a cheaper cost to match the current curriculum. Meetings will be arranged with school leaders, teachers and librarians. The idea will be marketed on social media platforms such as Linkedin, Facebook, Twitter, You-Tube, Tiktok and as well the tastethewrite website https://tastethewrite.xyz/. The electronic library will be established with videos and books related to the Kindergarten and Primary School syllabus
Short term outcome
Parents and teachers will have alternatives to paper based learning methods for children between the ages of 3 and 12 years
