76 million Indian households are engaged in dairy farming, 66% are marginal farmers. India has largest bovine population in world; milk productivity/animal in India is abysmally low (1/9th of the USA). Farmers income through dairying is low. Lack of preventive healthcare, proper nutrition, veterinary assistance, reproductive management for cattle are responsible for this. Lack of access to formal financial services like banking, credit, cattle insurance etc. are other major issues. Inefficiencies in the milk supply chain results in lack of transparency, less income for farmers. Farmers' income could be increased by leveraging information-technology to solve these issues.
18% of world's total milk production is produced in India. It has the world's largest bovine & the highest number of farms in the world. Indian milk economy is worth 77B USD. The overall Indian market is growing at 6.26% y-o-y while the demand has been growing at 8% y-o-y. To bridge this demand-supply gap technologies such as ours are required.
We serve rural dairy farmers. In India, 70% of rural households are engaged in dairying and there are 76 million households engaged in dairy farming. Milk processing companies are our primary customers and farmers are our primary beneficiaries. These companies are either private or are owned by member farmers (cooperative). The benefit of the premium quality milk and better efficiency enabled by our solutions are passed down by the dairy-processor companies to the farmers as better rates for milk. Our value-added services like real time digital payments, banking services, cattle insurance, feed fodder and veterinary services to farmers helps us meet all the needs of farmers. We apply analytics and machine learning to provide superior solutions to our farmers. Our customer centric, data-oriented approach sets us apart from the plethora of hardware providers who cannot provide customized consultative solutions to farmers. Our demonstrated ability to increase farmer income and profitability of milk processor companies have made us a clear winner among other solution providers. Hitherto, dairy farmers in India have not enjoyed such a technologically advanced and integrated solutions.
This makes us innovative in terms of technology, business process and the customers we serve.
We have applied our IoT stack in developing a range of solutions under the smartMoo brand. smartMoo runs on smartSDP, which acquires data via sensors that are embedded in Milking Systems, Animal Wearables, Milk Chilling Equipment & Milk Procurement Peripherals, and transmit the same to the Stellapps smartMoo Big Data Cloud Service Delivery Platform (SDP) where the different suite of applications analyze and crunch the received data before disseminating the Analytics & Data Science outcome to various stakeholders over low-end and smart mobile devices. These innovative solutions and state-of-the-art mechanization tools leverage IoT, Big-Data, Cloud, Mobility, and Data Analytics to improve Agri supply-chain parameters, including milk production & procurement, cold chain, animal insurance and farmer payments. Our smartMoo IoT router, in-premise IoT Controller and the smartMoo Cloud platform is capable of supporting data arising out of tens of millions of liters of milk through the milk production, procurement and cold-chain flow across millions of farmers.
We are trying to commoditize the hardware and shift the center of gravity to data and software on the cloud. This approach helps keep the capex component low and move towards a predominantly pay-as-you-grow service subscription model. Further we take a supply-chain view of the emerging markets dairy segment spanning production, procurement and cold-chain/logistics--not just limited to one node in the supply chain. This makes the data acquired across the supply chain very potent in delivering advanced machine-learning and analytics services to improve productivity, enhance quality, avoid pilferage and ensure cold chain protocol.

We have empowered 1.3 million farmers and 450,000 cattle with our technology. 3.5 billion litres of milk flows through our solutions annually. We have enabled 170+ milk-processing companies to improve their profitability with over 20000+ installations.
We have an extensive presence in 17 out of India's 29 states. We are planning to expand to another 5 states in the near future and cover 150,000 villages in next 3 years.
Based on current projections, we are set to serve 5 Million farmers in the next year and establish our solutions in 50,000 villages. Within the next 5 years, we will be growing these numbers to more than 25 million farmers.
We plan to aggressively expand our business to other emerging markets. Through OEM partnership with larger companies, we plan to ride on top of their marketing strength to grow fast outside India. We are also considering setting up channel partners and dealer networks to sell retail-oriented products like animal wearables (activity-meters). Apart from India, we have installations in France, Kenya and Nepal. In the next 5 years, we plan to scale our business to other developing countries in Africa and Asia.
As a startup working predominantly in rural areas, we are face challenges attracting top talent and retaining them. Deploying IoT solutions in rural hinterlands without internet, proper infrastructure and reliable electricity supply becomes a challenge. Convincing the traditional Indian dairy industry to adopt and pay for our futuristic solutions is another challenge. 40% of the Dairy segment in India is regulated (controlled by Govt. Milk Federations, Milk Unions and Cooperatives), working through the government bureaucracy for innovative products like ours is a risk.
We are dependent on aggregators, channel partners and dealer network to scale quickly into the rural hinterland and on large OEM partners to expand into other emerging markets (like south east Asia, Latin America & Africa). This dependency is a source of risk but by legally binding them through contracts, we can mitigate this risk. Protecting our intellectual property is another challenge.
By hiring motivated individuals who share the cultural values of our organization and following a referral system for recruitment, we have been able to mitigate the risk of attracting right talent. Our mooLite applications and solar powered solutions enable us to connect such villages with our solutions.
We adopt a consultative approach and address our solutions to solve the major challenges of customer milk processors to mitigate this risk.We work with regulatory bodies, build brand awareness and demonstrate the benefits of our solution to improve farmer income to address this challenge. We file patents and trademarks to ensure that our IP is protected.

We have the first movers' advantage of developing and deploying IoT and cloud solutions for farmers in India. We have built significant experience and expertise within the 8 years since our inception. We have also developed a good understanding of the unique challenges in the dairy industry and developed solutions suited for it. By handholding the traditional dairy sector and enabling it to become Tech Savvy, we have carved out our name and built trust within the organization. All this enables us to successfully achieve our mission of digitizing the dairy industry in India and abroad.
We partner with banks, insurance companies, veterinarians to come up with solutions designed to suite local contexts and thus deliver digital economy to farmers. We also partner with equipment manufacturers to procure hardware like weighing machines, milk analyzers etc. that we can integrate with our software solutions.
Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, ABB Technology Ventures, Qualcomm Ventures, Blume Ventures, Omnivore Partners and IIT Madras are our funding partners.
We reach farmers by selling to milk processing companies and cooperatives. Thus, we benefit farmers without them paying for our solutions. There are two parts to our revenue from a customer - the capital expenditure for hardware and the recurring service fees (for the cloud/analytics etc.). We also supply our solution in a zero-capex model where we charge a subscription fee to the customer. This enables easy adoption of our solutions.
As our platform matures and our IoT App Store takes shape, we also plan to monetize the transactions passing through our platform (e.g., charging for the API access into the platform). Given the platform nature of our core product, we plan to extend our products and wares into other verticals (e.g., factory / Industrial settings), other cold chain segments (we are already prototyping and trailing cold room management, pharma cold chain, grocery logistics cold chain etc.).
Our work is currently funded through investment money and our revenues. As we scale up our business, we will attain financial sustainability to fund our work through the revenues we generate.
