What is the name of your solution?

In-home Postpartum Care to Moorish Americans

Provide a one-line summary of your solution.

Postpartum care is essential to families suffering from lack of support and postpartum sadness

What specific problem are you solving?

We want to serve families in the Moorish American communities who are postpartum that give birth at home. We provide home kits and in home support in the community. Birthing folks in the Moorish American community experience high infant mortality rates as well as maternal rates because of lack of support and care in the hospitals. We typically have home births and would love to continue as long as we have the proper education, equipment and care.

What is your solution?

Our Solution is to continue to train more Moorish Americans to become doulas and provide home kits. The two solutions can maintain a healthy balance of support and expertise to the community.

Who does your solution serve, and in what ways will the solution impact their lives?

The solution directly impacts the Moorish Americans. The support you have during the postpartum period can influence the rest of your parenting experience. Knowing you have support lifts your spirits and helps you know you aren’t alone which decreases the chance of postpartum depression.

Which Indigenous community(s) does your solution benefit? In what ways will your solution benefit this community?

Moorish Americans aren’t seen fully as a recognized community. We are descendants born in America with roots in Morocco. We birth children who are seen as threats as soon as they arrive and the birthing folks have a really high mortality rate during birth and postpartum. Our postpartum doulas help families at home during their birth and healing time.

How are you and your team well-positioned to deliver this solution?

We are a group of birth workers who go to the homes of new and growing families to provide healing kits, cook meals, and teach moms about breastfeeding. We created an agency because of the many complaints we’ve heard from families who didn’t align with the doulas the interviewed. We believe it because of misaligned values of the birth workers. We intentionally seek out Moorish American families because the values are a bit different than what traditional doulas are used to serving.

Why are you applying to Solve?

The financial need is specifically for families who do not feel safe giving birth in hospitals and wish to be provided with home birth and postpartum kits.

The insurance companies don’t support home births so it’s really challenging to keep up with the needs of the families we provide service for.

How is your Team Lead connected to the community or communities in which your project is based?

We all participate in community baby showers to help better prepare families for materials they may need after baby. The community donates used clothes, and other necessities.
