The core technology powering this solution is the application’s virtual reality game; EcoSystem. The name comes from its intention to illustrate the effects of climate change on people and their households.
When users open the game, they are allowed to customise their character’s features which represent objects in nature and the household. The "eye" feature symbolises the type of bulb used in the player's home, which based on the user's choices may contribute to emissions, while the "hair" feature represents the type of carbon sink plants in the player's garden.

These analogies act as tricks that ensure that people see and learn that nature and everything around affects them.
A player's decisions will impact the climate, CO2 level, general health (physical and mental health), water safety, finances, and temperature in their environment. The game, therefore, works by rewarding and reprimanding users’ health, security, and finances based on their in-game choices. The game also allows them to see how much each decision they make on household amenities costs. They are led to see their “home” and how the choices they have made during character customisation would start to affect their system. Every 24 hours, they perform “Water missions” to earn money and expend water. While performing these missions like having a bath, they are prompted by tempting pop-ups to spend a longer time in the bathroom and expend more water. This finally results in a bill that would be deducted from your current in-game balance. The missions are typically launched in the ‘Kitchen’ and ‘Bathroom’ scenes. The missions aim to accustom players to learn to adapt to a sustainable lifestyle which subconsciously flows from their virtual world to their real world.
When the climate and other measurements of a user’s health have been compromised, a system override function would be activated and full health can only be restored by 20>#/b### of the player’s initial capital. The initial capital for every user is 10,000 in-game currency and the cost would therefore be 2,000 of the currency.
A user with an inability to complete payment due to insufficient funds would have the cost deducted in advance, leaving the user indebted to the game. By paying attention to every aspect of this game, we are putting a human face on the problem of climate change by showing not just how it affects the environment but also how it affects people as inhabitants of the planet.
The game harvests the self-centred nature of humans and makes climate change all about them, therefore urging them to act.
