Olio Solution
According to the UN-Habitat estimates, about 3 billion people,40 percent of the world’s population, will need adequate housing, and 100 million people worldwide are homeless. In Ethiopia, slums constitute 79.1% of the housing stock. In the capital city Addis Ababa, about 80 % of the population cannot afford housing construction costs that meet minimum standards. The problem is more severe in rural areas due to high material costs. For example, a single block cost increases by more than 60% for every 200 km away from Addis Ababa. Conventional Brick firing causes green gas emissions and deforestation, and the cement Industry is responsible for 7% of total emissions.
Before multiple global challenges like Covid-19 and the war in Ukraine, the construction sector is the primary job-creating sector. Due to high oil, cement, and other construction input prices, the sector is not creating enough jobs.
We provide an affordable, durable, manually operated portable machine to produce interlocking compressed earth bricks for more cost-effective and environmentally-friendly construction. It can also be reconfigured to create paving bricks and charcoal briquettes and is designed to be operated by a layperson with minimal training. The machine requires little maintenance and is easy to assemble and transport.
The interlocking compressed earth bricks production process involves mixing at least 5 percent cement or lime stabilizer with soil and a minimal amount of water. The Mixturrs are compressed using steel hand press machines or mechanical press machines to produce good-quality bricks. Compared with burned bricks, the benefits of this technology include greater energy efficiency and savings on money and firewood. Other benefits include the ability for local production, flexible sizing, labor intensiveness that can create jobs, and good stability and strength.

Olio Enterprise's interlocking earth brick-making machine is innovative for several reasons:
1. Use of locally sourced materials: The machine uses locally sourced materials such as soil, sand, and cement to produce interlocking earth bricks. This reduces the cost of building materials and promotes sustainable practices by reducing the need for traditional building materials like wood and concrete.
2. Interlocking design: The bricks produced by the machine have an interlocking design that eliminates the need for mortar or cement to hold them together. This reduces the amount of cement needed for construction projects, which can help to mitigate the environmental impact of building projects.
3. Cost-effective: The machine is designed to be affordable and accessible to small construction enterprises, entrepreneurs, and communities in Ethiopia and the broader African market. This makes it possible for these groups to compete in the market by reducing their costs and increasing their efficiency.
4. Eco-friendly: The machine produces interlocking earth bricks that are ecofriendly and sustainable. The bricks are made from locally sourced materials and require minimal cement, which reduces the environmental impact of construction projects.
5. Additionally, Olio's focus on providing training and support to local entrepreneurs and businesses helps to create a sustainable ecosystem that benefits the wider community.
Overall, Olio Enterprise's interlocking earth brick-making machine is innovative because it promotes sustainable practices, reduces the cost of building materials, and is accessible to small construction enterprises, entrepreneurs, and communities in Ethiopia and the broader African market.
Our company has set a goal to increase the production capacity of our current model fourfold over the next two years, resulting in approximately 120 machines manufactured per year under normal business conditions. We aim to generate total revenue of £250,000 by selling machines, training, and consultancy services. To achieve this goal, we require an investment, grant, or loan of approximately £40,000. Our recent trends over the last six months, including manufacturing 15 machines and raising over £10,000, securing space for our workshop and office, and other activities, demonstrate that we are well-positioned to achieve this target. Our company has ambitious goals of increasing our machine production capability to 500 pre year after 5 years, help build tens of thousands affordable houses, generating over £1,000,000 in revenue, and creating thousands of job opportunities for local entrepreneurs. We are confident that we can achieve these goals, especially with our ongoing discussions with the Development Bank of Ethiopia regarding financing. The progress is moving in the right direction, and the only pending issue is the final certificate for intellectual property rights. We plan to expand our product exports beyond Ethiopia because our innovative technology can help address many countries' housing and energy needs.

Olio Enterprise measures its progress toward its impact goals through various metrics related to its business operations and the impact of its technology. Some of the key metrics that Olio Enterprise may use to measure its progress include:
- Several machines delivered per year: Olio Enterprise may track the number of interlocking earth brick machines they provide to their customers yearly. This metric reflects the demand for their technology and their ability to meet that demand.
- Several houses are built with the bricks produced by the Olio Enterprise technology: Olio Enterprise may track the number of homes built using interlocking earth bricks made by their machines. This metric reflects the impact of their technology on the construction industry and the lives of people who benefit from safe and sustainable housing.
- CO2 emission cut per year: Olio Enterprise may track the carbon dioxide emissions avoided yearly by using interlocking earth bricks produced by their machines instead of traditional building materials like wood and concrete. This metric reflects their technology's environmental impact and commitment to sustainability.
- Several job opportunities created: Olio Enterprise may track the number of jobs created due to their technology and business operations. This metric reflects their impact on the local economy and commitment to creating jobs and stimulating economic growth in local communities.
- Customer satisfaction: Olio Enterprise may also measure customer satisfaction through surveys or other feedback mechanisms. This metric reflects the quality of their technology and their ability to meet the needs of their customers.
Olio Enterprise's solution to the problem of expensive and unsustainable building materials is to produce interlocking earth bricks using locally sourced materials such as soil, sand, and cement. These bricks are designed to be eco-friendly, cost-effective, and easy to use, making them an ideal solution for small construction enterprises, entrepreneurs, and communities in Ethiopia and the broader African market.
The interlocking design of the bricks eliminates the need for mortar or cement to hold them together, reducing the amount of glue needed for construction projects. This helps mitigate the environmental impact of building projects by reducing the amount of carbon dioxide emissions produced during manufacturing.
Using locally sourced materials, Olio Enterprise can reduce the cost of building materials and promote sustainable practices by reducing the need for traditional building materials like wood and concrete. This makes it possible for small construction enterprises, entrepreneurs, and communities to compete in the market by reducing costs and increasing efficiency.
The core technology that powers Olio Enterprise's solution is their interlocking earth brick-making machine. This machine is designed to produce interlocking earth bricks using locally sourced materials such as soil, sand, and cement.
The machine works by mixing the soil, sand, and cement with water to create a mixture that is fed into the machine. The device compresses the mixture into interlocking earth bricks using a hydraulic press, eliminating the need for mortar or cement to hold the bricks together.
The interlocking design of the bricks allows them to be easily stacked and locked together, creating a strong and stable structure without the need for additional materials. This reduces the amount of cement needed for construction projects, which can help mitigate building projects' environmental impact.
The interlocking earth brick-making machine is designed to be affordable and accessible to small construction enterprises, entrepreneurs, and communities in Ethiopia and the broader African market. This makes it possible for these groups to compete in the market by reducing costs and increasing efficiency.
