DAID solution for IDPs
There are 373000 household Internally Displaced People (IDPs) in North Darfur state of Sudan fled from their original places and settled in 27 IDPs’ camps and IDPs’ gathering areas in 18 North Darfur state localities/provinces, due to Darfur crisis which started in 2003. In addition to second displacement in 2012 and 2013 due to second war accrued in Darfur region between Arab militia (Rapid Support Force) and Darfur rebels which resulted displacement of 163970 household and settled in the same camps and gathering areas. All these groups are settling in North Darfur state in 21 IDPs’ camps and 6 IDPs’ gathering areas.
After The political shift that occurred in Sudan in December 19th, 2019 which changed the old government with new, and Peace agreement concluded in Juba 30/10/2020 between new government of Sudan and rebels, also reduction of the humanitarian assistance in the IDPs’ camps and gathering areas beside the dire economic conditions has pressed the IDPs to go back to resume farming and pursue alternative livelihoods security mechanisms, in attempt to normalize life in the original villages and settlement areas.
The process of their returning back to their original places needs 536970 house to be built for them in North Darfur state only, and building of these houses needs to cut around 1,610,910 big trees to burn 536970 groups of building bricks for them, one group of bricks (60,000 to 80,000 bricks) for each household. Cutting of 1,610,910 big trees will causes deforestation and other climate and land challenges and risks, while burning bricks will result high carbon and this will causes health problems to all North Darfur citizens due to inhaling smoke from burning bricks and Environmental Pollution and other environment challenges.
The solution will introduce a new technology called Stabilized Soil Block (SSB) housing. The (SSB) produced by SSB machine and it is a simple machine used to make blocks for building houses instead of bricks. The production of these types of blocks need only sand, little percentage of cement and water. Doesn’t need cutting trees for burning, it is environmentally friendly, ‘woodless’ technology, it is high productive machine easy to handle and use. The machine is in different sizes and capacities and easy to access. The way of producing these types of blocks and building house is very easy in terms of financially cost, time and manpower.
The solution will Capacitate and train 20 IDPs’ youth in one IDPs’ camp as first step to equip them with knowledge and skills on the concept and use of Stabilized Soil Block (SSB) Making. These 20 trained youth to raise the awareness of IDPs’ communities on impotence of using the new technology and adapt to more extreme weather and create low-carbon housing for their communities. Provision of 5 SSB machines to these trained youth to familiarize themselves in SSB and then use them to serve the community in the next steps.
This solution will serve 373000 household Internally Displaced People (IDPs) in North Darfur state and it will change their behaviors and ideas towards their housing solutions and will facilitate and urge the process of returning to their original places to normalize life in the original villages and settlement.
