Empowering Communities Through Data in Nigeria
Let’s say you learn that a significant solar project, road or dam is going to be built close to where you reside. Most likely, you would be interested in learning every aspect of the project and how you may influence the final decision.
However, all too frequently, the planning and finance for these projects aren’t finalized before the community finds out about them, leaving them less time to offer feedback on the project and its possible effects.
The information flow between governments, development banks, business players, civil society, and communities required to shift in order to enhance how a community may educate itself about and participate in the present development process. Civil society organization and activists need to have access to data for development and train on data analysis and visualization
Improving data literacy: One of the first steps in empowering communities through data is to improve data literacy among community members, This can be achieved through training programs, workshops, and other educational initiatives that teach community members how to collect, analyze, and use data to inform decision-making.
Promoting data-driven decision-making: Once communities have the necessary data literacy skills, it is important to promote data-driven decision-making.This can be achieved by providing access to data tools and platforms, encouraging the use of data in decision-making processes, and providing training and support for community members who want to use data in their work.
In order to share easily available information about the newest proposed developments with the communities that live and work nearby, we developed the iTech Alert System.

The iTech Alert System team verifies the project details after a project enters our database and then creates a summary, or “snapshot,” of each project. To the communities that want the information the most, we send these snapshots along with the original project documentation by email, secured mobile messaging, in-person delivery. We always need assistance analyzing projects, disseminating snapshots, and bolstering community-led reactions because the iTech Alert System database expands by roughly 6–9 projects every day. The project summaries have been translated into approximately 100 different languages because accessibility is crucial.

Our solution simply put, is a way for people to contribute to the betterment of society using their expertise in data science. We exist to empower the world’s social change makers by making their data speak to them more clearly, thus allowing them to do what they do best even better.
