RealGrow
Real Grow aims to fight the healthcare crisis in India, especially in northern states by promoting organic farming.
In India, cancer rates are growing especially in agricultural states such as Punjab, Haryana, and Rajasthan. These diseases are mainly caused by inorganic farming. Inorganic farming requires the use of fertilizers and pesticides causing depositions of uranium, cadmium, lead into the soil, vegetation, water bodies, and groundwater. Regions such as the Malwa belt are the most affected by this issue as the cancer cases have doubled since 2019 and more than 80k cancer rates are recorded in 2022.
This is a significant issue in the communities we are targeting as in India, more than 50 percent of deaths from cancer are recorded in agricultural states making them the most vulnerable. On a global level, The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), a specialized agency of the World Health Organization (WHO), has classified several pesticides as known or probable human carcinogens. These include glyphosate, which is the active ingredient in the widely used herbicide Roundup, and the insecticides malathion and diazinon.
As these issues increase and cause permanent damage to land and water, no preventative measures are being taken. The lack of healthcare facilities and awareness makes it a growing issue.
RealGrow is an agricultural non-profit that aims to fight India's cancer crisis by encouraging organic farming and people battling cancer. RealGrow makes this possible by:
1) Social Media and Blogs: RealGrow's social media page has posts spreading awareness about organic farming, healthcare, the environment, and organic food.
2) Membership: RealGrow collaborates with organic store owners and farmers by writing blogs on our website and promoting them on our social media page. This is essential as we discovered that the majority of organic farmers claim that they don't have an established market or know how to use social media. In exchange, they pay a monthly fee where 80% of it donated to cancer patients in the state cancer welfare society.
3) Our website is meant for the use of farmers seeking help, resources, and forms to start organic farming. Our page provides a brief way to start organic farming attached with the required forms and a help page to ask for any guidance. People looking for organic produce can also get in touch with our members through our website.
RealGrow is an initiative for both the environment and people.
The target population for RealGrow are rural populations with a high cancer rate who are often located in remote areas with limited access to healthcare facilities and services and organic farmers with a limited market.
Many rural organic farmers face challenges when it comes to healthcare, including lack of awareness about preventive healthcare practices, limited access to healthcare facilities and services, and high healthcare costs. Moreover, many farmers are exposed to pesticides and other harmful chemicals that increase the risk of cancer and other diseases.
RealGrow could address these challenges by providing guidance and resources tailored to the needs of farmers. For example, RealGrow could offer. educational workshops on topics such as preventive healthcare, healthy eating, and sustainable agriculture practices outside of our social media platform.
RealGrow could also collaborate with local non-profits that are working on providing healthcare providers to expand awareness in rural areas. Additionally, RealGrow could leverage technology to connect farmers with necessary resources.
By addressing the needs of farmers, RealGrow could improve the health and well-being of this underserved population, while also promoting sustainable agriculture practices and supporting local economies.
For Real Grow, the team's proximity to the target communities in India would be a critical factor in designing and delivering a successful solution. The team lead and the team members have a deep understanding of the communities they are serving, their needs, and their cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds since the leader is a junior researcher in healthcare along with having a similar cultural background.
Real Grow could engage with the local communities and farmers through various means, such as interviews, surveys, and consultations with local leaders and experts. The team plans to establish partnerships with local organizations, community-based groups, and farmers' associations to ensure that the solution is developed in a way that meets the specific needs of the target population.
The team aims to work with the communities to identify the most pressing issues related to cancer prevention and organic farming and design a solution that is both feasible and meaningful to the target population. The solution is to be based on the communities' input, ideas, and agendas to ensure that it is culturally appropriate, effective, and sustainable.
Real Grow also tries to incorporate feedback mechanisms into the solution to enable continuous monitoring and evaluation through local surveys. This would allow the team to refine the solution based on feedback from the target communities and ensure that it remains relevant and effective in addressing their needs.
Overall, Real Grow demonstrates a strong commitment to working closely with the target communities and ensuring that their voices are heard throughout the design and implementation process. This would help to build trust and ensure that the solution is embraced and owned by the communities it serves, leading to a higher likelihood of success and impact.

- Pilot: An organization testing a product, service, or business model with a small number of users
Financial barriers: RealGrow's business model involves charging local organic farmers to promote their products and donating the proceeds to cancer patients. If RealGrow is having a difficult time growing, it could be due to insufficient revenue streams from farmers as we charge low fees and a lack of fundraising resources available to operate the nonprofit.
- Market Barriers: There may be challenges in finding markets for locally produced organic products. RealGrow may need to invest in market research and establish partnerships with retailers and distributors to ensure that there is demand for the products they are promoting so we can also help farmers find the right sources for them.
- Cultural Barriers: There are some cultural barriers to the adoption of organic farming practices in Punjab which has heavily relied on inorganic farming for the past 50 years and gets government support for purchasing pesticides and fertilizers but lacks support when it comes to organic farming making it unaware about sustainable practices. Along with the deteriorated soil quality, it may be difficult to grow organic food without relying on inorganic practices creating a restraint from farmers. RealGrow needs support to convince farmers and be a more reliable source for farmers who want to switch to organic farming.
- Financial (e.g. accounting practices, pitching to investors)
- Human Capital (e.g. sourcing talent, board development)
- Public Relations (e.g. branding/marketing strategy, social and global media)
RealGrow's approach of promoting organic farming and donating the proceeds to cancer patients is a unique and innovative way of addressing two critical issues in India - health and agriculture. By focusing on organic farming, RealGrow is promoting sustainable and healthy agricultural practices that have significant long-term benefits for both the farmers and the consumers.
Moreover, RealGrow's solution is different from traditional donation-based models that rely on charity and external funding. Instead, it is a sustainable, self-funded model that empowers farmers to improve their livelihoods while also contributing to a social cause. By charging farmers for promotional services, RealGrow is providing them with a tangible benefit in the form of increased visibility and marketing support, which can help them expand their customer base and increase their incomes.
RealGrow's solution could catalyze broader positive impacts from others in the space by demonstrating the viability of a sustainable business model that combines social impact with financial sustainability. This could encourage other non-profits and social enterprises to explore similar models in other sectors, thereby driving broader innovation and impact.
In terms of changing the market, RealGrow's approach could encourage a shift towards organic farming practices in India by raising awareness and promoting the benefits of organic products. This could help to create a more vibrant and sustainable market for organic products, which could have significant economic and environmental benefits. By catalyzing a shift towards organic farming, RealGrow's solution could also contribute to addressing issues such as soil degradation, water scarcity, and climate change, which are significant challenges in the Indian agricultural sector.
Overall, RealGrow's solution represents a unique and innovative approach to addressing critical social and environmental challenges in India. By combining sustainable business practices with social impact, RealGrow is demonstrating the potential for a new type of non-profit model that could drive positive change in multiple sectors.

One of RealGrow's target is to work with local newspaper services to promote farmers.

By providing financial support to cancer patients, we hope to alleviate some of the financial burden associated with cancer treatment and improve their overall quality of life. We want to raise at least 20-30K INR within a year to be able to provide medicines or sponsor a treatment.
Raise awareness about the benefits of organic products: RealGrow aims to raise awareness about the benefits of organic products, such as their health benefits and environmental sustainability. By promoting the consumption of organic products, we hope to create a more vibrant and sustainable market for these products, which could have significant economic and environmental benefits. We aim to collaborate with organic brands such as 24 organic mantra and organic India, and local stores
To achieve these impact goals, RealGrow plans to continue to work closely with local farmers to provide them with the resources and support they need to expand their businesses and adopt sustainable agricultural practices. We will also continue to partner with local hospitals and cancer organizations to identify cancer patients in need of financial support and to ensure that our donations are directed to those who need it most. Additionally, RealGrow plans to continue to raise awareness about the benefits of organic products through targeted marketing campaigns and educational programs. By working towards these impact goals, RealGrow hopes to make a significant contribution to improving the lives of people in India while promoting sustainable agriculture practices.
