Data Haiti
The specific problem that Data Haiti is working to solve is the lack of access to quality civic education and training in Haiti. This problem is widespread and affects the entire population, especially young people who make up a significant portion of the population. According to UNICEF, Haiti has a population of over 11 million people, and more than half are under the age of 25. However, only a small percentage of young people in Haiti have access to quality civic education and training. Data Haiti will equip them with the knowledge, skills, and confidence they need to participate effectively in their communities and in decision-making processes.
Haiti is a country that has faced significant political, social, and economic challenges over the years, including natural disasters, political instability, poverty, and inequality. These factors have contributed to a lack of access to quality education and training, including civic education. As a result, many young people in Haiti lack knowledge and skills in critical areas such as leadership, problem-solving, communication, and decision-making. Data Haiti aims to address this problem by providing an innovative platform that is interactive, engaging, and relevant to their lives. Data Haiti is making it possible for them to access high-quality civic education and training regardless of their location or socio-economic status.
Data Haiti is working to scale up its solution to reach as many young people as possible across Haiti. The ultimate goal is to empower young people to become active and engaged citizens who can participate effectively in their communities and in decision-making processes. By providing access to quality civic education and training, Data Haiti is helping to build a more inclusive, democratic, and resilient society in Haiti.
Data Haiti is contributing to the broader goal of improving civic education and training globally. As noted in the Challenge overview, many countries face challenges in providing quality civic education. There is a need for technology-enabled solutions that can help bridge this gap, particularly in Haiti. Data Haiti's solution can serve as a model for other countries and organizations looking to improve civic education and training for young people.
Data Haiti is an open platform that integrates and visualizes statistical data on Haiti to support data-driven decision-making for citizens, government officials, civil society organizations, and investors. The platform will offer an engaging information tool for the country's long-term development policy by facilitating and promoting the access, understanding, and use of public data. It will use advanced and innovative data integration, visualization, and distribution technologies.
The platform will be implemented in three stages. In the first stage, the platform will focus on the analysis of Haiti's demography and environment at the different geographical levels of the country (departments, arrondissements, and communes). It will include data organized in geographical reports with interactive visualizations and descriptive texts to facilitate analysis for people with different levels of expertise. In the following stages, other data sources may be integrated, and new features will be added, such as an Application Programming Interface (API) and bulk data download functionality, and automated daily or monthly updates, according to the data availability.
Datawheel, a company recognized worldwide for its data integration, distribution, and visualization solutions, will develop the platform. Datawheel's technology and consulting services provide fast, rigorous, and innovative solutions that help organizations turn vast amounts of data into decision-driven insights for all audiences.
The platform's technology includes a powerful data integration system that allows the platform to connect to multiple data sources and aggregate the data into a common format. Data Haiti will use interactive visualizations that enable users to analyze and understand the data easily. The platform's user-friendly interface allows users to navigate the data and create their reports and visualizations.
Data Haiti will provide various benefits, including:
Easy access to reliable and up-to-date data for decision-making by citizens, government officials, civil society organizations, and investors.
Improved transparency and accountability in public decision-making by enabling data-driven analysis.
Promotion of data literacy and the use of data to inform public policies.
A valuable tool for investors to identify economic opportunities in the country and make informed investment decisions.
In summary, Data Haiti is an open platform that provides easy access to public data, enabling users to analyze and understand the data easily through interactive visualizations. The platform will promote data-driven decision-making, transparency, and accountability in public decision-making, and promote data literacy in Haiti.
The target population of our solution, Data Haiti, includes citizens, government officials, civil society organizations, and investors who need access to accurate and up-to-date statistical data on Haiti to make informed decisions. Currently, there is a lack of centralized, user-friendly platforms that provide easy access to such data, which can hinder the decision-making processes of these groups.
For citizens, Data Haiti will provide a platform where they can easily access data on Haiti's economy, environment, demographics, and other relevant factors at different geographic levels, including departments, arrondissements, and communes. This information will empower citizens to hold their government accountable and participate in civic life with a more informed perspective.
For government officials, Data Haiti will help improve the accuracy and efficiency of decision-making processes by providing them with access to comprehensive and reliable data on key issues affecting the country. This information will support the development of evidence-based policies and help them better allocate resources to meet the needs of the population.
For civil society organizations, Data Haiti will provide access to data that can be used to inform their work and advocacy efforts. By having accurate and relevant data, these organizations can better understand the needs of the communities they serve and tailor their programs and services to meet those needs.
For investors, Data Haiti will provide a tool to assess the potential for investment in the country's various sectors. This information can help them make more informed decisions and promote the country's economic development.
In summary, our solution serves a diverse range of stakeholders in Haiti by providing them with access to relevant and accurate data, empowering them to make more informed decisions, and ultimately contributing to the country's long-term development goals. By addressing the current lack of centralized, user-friendly data platforms, Data Haiti will have a significant impact on the lives of Haitians by helping to create a more informed and engaged society, more efficient government, and a more competitive economy.

This MVP is currently serving as a low-touch and interactive version of some of the future features of Data Haiti.
I've participated in one of the previous Solve programs to support the formation of Cambridge HEART, and it was rewarding experience. I learned a lot from the Unbundle policing community and I was able to help the HEART team implement some of the best practices and resources I took from the experience. The program was very-welled structured and communal learning experience is priceless.
I'm now even more excited to participate for a personal project and I look forward to an even more engaging experience.

Our solution is innovative because it takes a comprehensive approach to civic education that combines learning experiences with opportunities for community building and collective action. We aspire to unlock the potential of technology to captivate learners in relevant and impactful ways, equipping them with the vital skills and knowledge essential for active participation in civic life.
Our platform utilizes a combination of interactive online modules, peer-to-peer learning, and real-world projects to help learners develop key civic competencies, such as assessing credibility of information, engaging across differences, understanding one’s own agency, and engaging with issues of power, privilege, and injustice. Through a mix of virtual and in-person interactions, learners are able to build relationships and networks with others who share similar interests and goals.
By helping learners develop key competencies and skills necessary for effective civic engagement, our platform could change the market by setting a new standard for how civic education is delivered and experienced. We believe that our solution has the potential to not only improve the lives of individual learners, but also contribute to a more informed, engaged, and equitable society.
As we look ahead to the upcoming year, our main focus is to make a lasting impact by engaging at least 10,000 users through our innovative platform. Our objective is to provide them with impactful social and emotional learning experiences so that they are better equipped for active participation as citizens. We also aim to partner with at least 50 educational institutions and community-based organizations to integrate our solution into their curricula and programs.
Our objective for the next five years is to achieve our impact goal of reaching over 1 million users and establishing Data Haiti as the foremost provider of accessible and innovative civic and social-emotional learning resources geared towards Haiti. Join us as we foster growth and promote positive change in this beautiful country! We also aim to establish partnerships with at least 500 educational institutions and community-based organizations globally.
To achieve these goals, we plan to:
Continuously improve our platform: We will seek feedback from learners, educators, and partners and use it to refine and improve our platform. We will also incorporate new features and content based on emerging trends and needs in the field of civic and social-emotional learning.
Build strategic partnerships: We will establish partnerships with educational institutions, community-based organizations, and other stakeholders to increase our reach and impact. Through these partnerships, we will integrate our solution into existing curricula and programs, and provide professional development opportunities for educators to effectively implement our platform.
Conduct impact evaluations: We will regularly evaluate the impact of our solution on learners' civic and social-emotional learning outcomes. We will use these evaluations to refine our approach and demonstrate the effectiveness of our platform to potential partners and funders.
Advocate for broader systemic change: We recognize that the need for civic and social-emotional learning goes beyond our platform. Therefore, we will advocate for broader systemic change to ensure that all learners have access to high-quality civic and social-emotional learning experiences. We will engage policymakers and education leaders to promote the integration of these topics into curricula and programs.
In order to ensure the growth and success of our platform, we are dedicated to securing funding from a variety of sources (foundations, impact investors, and government agencies). This diverse approach to funding will not only help us expand but also ensure long-term sustainability. We understand the importance of securing resources from multiple sources to continue making an impact in our community. Our primary objective is to secure sustainable funding that will enable us to serve and impact the community at large effectively. We will also explore revenue-generating models, such as licensing agreements with educational institutions and organizations.

We are measuring progress towards our impact goals through both quantitative and qualitative indicators. Some of the specific indicators we are using include:
We'll be monitoring the number of active participants and students who are actively involved with Data Haiti's resources and content, keeping a record of it over time.
Engagement metrics: We will monitor user engagement with our platform, including time spent on the platform, searches/queries, and other relevant metrics.
Surveys: We are conducting pre- and post-surveys with learners to assess changes in knowledge, skills, attitudes, and behaviors related to civic action and social-emotional learning.
We will conduct a series of case studies on diverse user groups to gather qualitative data. This data will assist us in gaining a comprehensive understanding of how our solution significantly enhances their lives. Through these case studies, we aim to closely examine the experiences of our users and gather valuable insights.
As a part of our commitment to providing exceptional service, we will actively solicit feedback from our partners. We value the input of all stakeholders, including educators, community organizations, and other valuable collaborators. Regularly collecting feedback will enable us to better understand their experience using our platform and identify new opportunities for growth and development. We're committed to creating an exceptional experience for all of our partners, and we believe this feedback is critical to achieving that goal.
Our assessment of the impact of Data Haiti on communities will involve monitoring the frequency with which Data Haiti users and learners engage in civic actions, as well as the tangible outcomes of these actions on their respective communities. We will collect and advertise testimonials. We will also track changes in social and political outcomes in communities where our program is being implemented.
Tracking progress on these indicators will allow us to accurately evaluate the impact of our program and consistently improve our approach based on data-driven insights.
- Activities: Develop and distribute an online curriculum on civic action learning, including educator support for classroom-based approaches and community-building opportunities for out-of-school, community-based approaches.
- Rephrased: Our users will gain a better understanding and heightened awareness of civic skills and knowledge. They will learn how to assess information credibility, and effectively engage with people that have different viewpoints. They will comprehend and use their own influence and meaningfully engage with matters related to power, privilege, and injustice. This will equip them with crucial life skills that will serve them well beyond the classroom.
- Outcomes: Increased core social-emotional learning skills among learners, including self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision-making.
- Impact: Increased civic engagement among learners, as demonstrated through participation in real-world problem-solving, building networks, organizing plans for collective action, and exploring prosocial careers.
Collecting data is crucial to support this theory of change. To achieve this, we could keep track of the number of users who engage with the platform (DAU/MAU). Additionally, we could monitor the level of engagement and participation in civic action, as well as the shifts in attitudes and beliefs toward civic engagement. Lastly, we should gather feedback from both learners and educators to evaluate the curriculum's effectiveness. This data could then be used to refine the curriculum and improve its impact over time.
Data Haiti will leverage big data and cloud-based infrastructure for the web app. The web app will be mobile-friendly and accessible to its target audience.

We do not generate revenue through our core activities, but we seek funding and partnerships to support our operations and expand our reach.
Our primary customers are educators, schools, and community-based organizations that work with young people ages 13-24. We provide access to our online learning platform, which includes modules on civic action, social-emotional learning, and prosocial career exploration. We also offer professional development and training services to educators to help them effectively integrate civic action learning into their classrooms and programs.

These services include custom program design, implementation support, and evaluation services. The revenue generated from these services supports our mission and helps us to continue providing access to our learning platform and services to underserved communities.
Our goal is to continue building partnerships and securing funding to support our mission and expand our reach to more learners and educators. Our organization is committed to empowering the younger generation to become more involved and take ownership of the issues that affect our society. These partnerships could include revenue-sharing agreements or service contracts.
Licensing and subscription fees: We plan to offer our platform as a paid service to organizations that want to use it as part of their own educational programs. This could include licensing fees for access to our curriculum and activities, as well as subscription fees for ongoing support and updates.
Consulting and training services: We plan to offer consulting and training services to schools and organizations that want to improve their own civic education programs. This could include custom curriculum development, teacher training, and program evaluation.
Sale of products: We plan to sell related products like books, games, or other educational resources that can be used in conjunction with our platform.
By diversifying our revenue streams and building sustainable partnerships with schools, community organizations, and other stakeholders, we believe we can achieve financial sustainability while continuing to provide high-quality civic education and engagement opportunities to our target population.
