For example, we use animations, to simplify complex concepts and promote positive attitudes toward social issues i.e, Gender-based Violence, teenage pregnancy, rights of people living with disabilities, etc.
Representation matters in education. By using characters and storylines that students can relate to, we create a sense of cultural representation and identity, helping students to see themselves in the learning material. This can improve student engagement and retention, leading to better learning outcomes.
Africa lags behind in using storytelling and media technology in the education sector. However, digitization in Africa is providing an opportunity for social change. The digitization of Africa is not only helping to bridge the digital divide but is also driving economic growth and social change. The production of educational content is also becoming a driving force for change in Africa.

The success of Tai Tanzania demonstrates that the use of media technology can be effective in promoting social change, empowering students, and creating a brighter future for all.

African adolescents are a diverse and dynamic group of young people who are shaping the future of the continent. They are between the ages of 10 and 19, and they represent the largest generation of young people in history. According to the United Nations, there are over 225 million adolescents in sub-Saharan Africa, and this number is expected to grow to over 300 million by 2050. Despite their potential, adolescents face significant challenges in accessing education, healthcare, economic opportunities, and technology. These challenges are particularly acute for marginalized girls, young women, and people living with disabilities.
Access to quality education is one of the biggest challenges facing African adolescents. By next year, our impact goal is to empower 15 million young minds in Tanzania and Kenya with creative educational content to drive positive change and address the challenges of their communities. Key issues that we focus on are gender equality, sexual and reproductive health, menstrual hygiene, the rights of people living with disabilities, and climate change.
To achieve this goal, we plan to:

To measure the impact of our educational content, we will collect data on the number of users and engagement levels on our online portal. We will also conduct surveys and focus groups to assess changes in knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors among the target audience. Additionally, we will track tangible outcomes such as increased enrollment in schools, decreased rates of teen pregnancy, and increased participation in community development initiatives.
In five years, we plan to empower 45 million young minds in East African countries ( by expanding our partnerships with media houses, increasing the number of implementation partners, and cementing our partnerships with government agencies such as the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Health. To scale up our online portal, we will invest in server upgrades, technological improvements, and additional technical staff to manage the platform and provide user support.
We anticipate that challenges may arise in terms of funding, stakeholder engagement, and cultural sensitivities. To address these challenges, we will diversify our funding sources, maintain open communication with our partners and stakeholders, and ensure that our educational content is culturally appropriate and respectful of local customs and traditions. Tai Tanzania uses a unique approach to developing and delivering
educational content preferring to package relevant information
in the form of engaging animated stories. This is especially effective
given the primary target group of young people. The use of digitally
animated content also lends itself well to an increasingly tech-driven
society in which most people have access to mobile phones and
the internet which is easier to disseminate and engage a wider
base of beneficiaries. Tai uses a tried and tested process for
developing educational content as described below.
Tai Tanzania’s methodology is simple. Once a topic has been
selected as the focus for educating the target group, the content is
gathered and developed through a participatory process that
involves key stakeholders.
This step involves basic data gathering on a particular topic through a
combination of desk research, literature review, and key informant interviews. The goal at this step is to define the issue that will become the focus of subsequent steps in the process. Tai pays attention to making sure that both the scope and substance of the issue defined is a true reflection of the youth experience and that the topic is one that young people and society both care about.
Storytelling and media production expertise is then employed to transform the content into relatable stories that are packed in either digital or print formats. Once production is complete, Tai engages the target group through video showings, debates, and dialogue forums in schools to ensure that young people are not just receiving information but are also engaging with it and retaining knowledge in a safe, open, and free space.
To maximize scale and reach, Tai will be employing social media
platforms in the future to reach more youth through remote
engagement techniques. On the social front, engagement is
achieved remotely using traditional media like a radio as well as
in-person outreach activities. Below is a step-by-step description
of what Tai Tanzania employs to develop and disseminate animated
education content.
To ensure impact measurement, Tai Tanzania conducts baseline surveys, pre, and post-tests as well as end-line surveys. Currently, we are using an independent M&E consultant to ensure that we get quality M&E reports. The reports are then shared with our stakeholders i.e funders, board members, government, and our beneficiaries.
Being among MIT Solve participants will give us the opportunity to access various learning opportunities, including workshops and webinars, which can help us build our knowledge on improving our theory of change. We can learn about different methodologies, frameworks, and tools to help us develop a more robust and evidence-based theory of change.
