The Volunteers Lab
The Volunteers Lab is trying to solve several problems facing young people in their community.
Failure of the current education system to create active citizens: The traditional education system focuses on rote learning and exam-based assessment, neglecting the development of essential life skills such as critical thinking, problem-solving, and creativity. As a result, young people are not being equipped with the necessary skills and knowledge to become active and engaged citizens.
Lack of skill-knowledge-value based knowledge among students: Many young people lack the necessary skills, values and knowledge to become active citizens and contribute to their community. This is partly due to the lack of emphasis on skill-based education in schools and colleges.
Lack of creative spaces for youth: Many young people lack access to spaces where they can express themselves creatively and develop their talents and skills. This lack of access to creative spaces can limit their potential and prevent them from becoming active and engaged citizens.
Lack of community engagement among youth: Many young people lack the opportunity to engage with their community and contribute to social issues. This can be due to a lack of awareness of social issues, lack of support and resources, and lack of opportunities to engage in community service.
Lack of support system to undertake social initiatives: Many young people lack the support they need to take on social initiatives, including funding, mentorship, and resources.
The scale of this problem varies depending on the community, but it is a global issue that affects millions of young people. In India, where we are based, there is a large population of young people, with about 356.4 million people aged 10-24 years. However, only a small percentage of this population is actively engaged in social issues and volunteerism. According to the National Sample Survey Office (NSSO), only 1% of India's population engages in any form of volunteer work.
The consequences of these problems can be severe. Young people who lack the skills and opportunities to become active citizens may become disengaged and disconnected from their community, leading to social and political apathy. This can have a negative impact on their personal and professional development, as well as on the social and economic development of their community.
When young people are not actively engaged in addressing social issues, communities miss out on the unique perspectives, energy, and creativity that youth can bring to solving problems. Additionally, a lack of youth-led initiatives can lead to a lack of innovation and sustainability in addressing social issues. This can also contribute to a lack of civic engagement and a lack of active and engaged citizens, which is essential for a healthy and thriving community.
The Volunteers Lab is an innovative solution to the problem of lack of youth engagement and empowerment in addressing social issues in their communities. The solution is innovative because it is the first of its kind by a youth-led social enterprise to promote volunteerism and empower youth.
The program provides an intensive training and development program for youth, who are looking to take action and deepen their understanding of a social issue they’re passionate about. The program focuses on the ideation stage of creating a youth-led social initiative, encouraging youth to brainstorm an idea for a social project, enterprise, service or product, and develop their leadership skills. This approach is unique and provides a new and significantly improved approach as it not only promotes volunteerism and empowers youth but also provides a comprehensive support system for youth to develop and launch their social enterprise, giving them access to helpful resources and mentorship.
The lab provides an ecosystem for youth to meet, learn and work together, creating a collaborative space for them to ideate, design, execute and outreach their social initiatives. This ecosystem is designed to foster creativity and innovation among youth, which can lead to more sustainable and impactful solutions to social issues.
The lab also provides a platform for youth to share their impact stories, which can inspire and motivate other youth to take action and make a difference in their communities. By providing young people with the necessary skills, resources, and support, the lab enables them to become active and engaged citizens, which can have a positive impact on the community and society as a whole.
In summary, The Volunteers Lab is an innovative solution that provides a new and significantly improved approach to the problem of lack of youth engagement and empowerment in addressing social issues in their communities, by empowering youth through capacity development, community engagement and providing them with a comprehensive support system to develop and launch their social enterprise. This can potentially change the market and enable broader positive impacts from others in this space, by inspiring more youth-led social initiatives and promoting a culture of volunteerism and active citizenship.
The target population of The Volunteers Lab is young people aged between 13–30 years, who are passionate about creating a positive change in their communities. They are typically underserved in terms of education, skills, resources and opportunities to engage in community service. Many of them feel that the traditional education system does not provide them with the necessary skills and knowledge to become active and engaged citizens. They lack access to creative spaces where they can express themselves and develop their talents and skills. They also lack the opportunity to engage with their community and contribute to social issues, due to lack of awareness, support, and resources.
The Volunteers Lab addresses these needs by creating an ecosystem for youth to be active global citizens. It enables the creativity of youth to engage in their community, empowers the skills of youth to enhance their capacity and encourages youth to create and lead social initiatives. The Lab also builds a creative space for youth to meet, learn and work together. Through the volunteer platform, it provides an easy and convenient way for volunteers to log their hours, update their progress, and share their impact stories.
The Volunteers Lab provides support through funding assistance, mentorship, training, and networking opportunities to help young people put their ideas into action. The program also uses monitoring and evaluation tools to measure the impact of the initiatives and share the success stories to celebrate the volunteering journey.
Overall, The Volunteers Lab provides young people with the skills, resources, and opportunities they need to become active and engaged citizens and make a positive difference in their communities.
Our team members are representative of those we serve as they are young volunteers themselves and have a deep understanding of the challenges and needs facing youth in their communities. They have 15 years of experience in volunteering and have engaged with over 100,000 youth volunteers across India. They have coordinated over 250 initiatives and have developed strong skills in volunteer management and program coordination. They also have a well-established network of stakeholders and partnerships that they can leverage to support and mentor youth in their own initiatives. They understand the importance of courage, compassion, collaboration, and co-creation, which are the core values of our organization, and they are able to relate to the youth they serve as they themselves were once volunteers.

Our impact goal for the next year is to engage at least 10,000 youth in the community, empower 1000 youth to create and lead 100+ social initiatives, and provide a minimum funding assistance of $250 per initiative.
To achieve this goal, we plan to implement the following strategies:
Increase outreach: We will increase our outreach efforts to reach more young people in our community and raise awareness about the opportunities and benefits of youth engagement and volunteerism, through various mediums such as social media, events, and partnerships with schools, colleges, and other organizations.
Enhance capacity development training: We will enhance our capacity development training program to provide more in-depth training and development for youth, including training on critical thinking, problem-solving, leadership skills, and project management. This will enable them to develop and implement their social initiatives more effectively.
Increase mentorship opportunities: We will increase the number of mentorship opportunities for youth, providing personalized support and guidance to help them develop and launch their social enterprise. This will help them to overcome any challenges they might face and ensure that their initiatives are sustainable and impactful.
Increase funding assistance: We will increase funding assistance for youth-led social initiatives to provide more financial support to help them implement their ideas. We plan to provide a minimum funding assistance of $250 per initiative to support the youth-led initiatives.
Increase networking opportunities: We will increase networking opportunities for youth, providing them with the opportunity to connect with like-minded individuals and organizations who share their passion for social issues and volunteerism. This will help them to develop partnerships and collaborations that can enhance the impact of their initiatives.
Increase story-telling: We will increase the number of opportunities for youth to share their impact stories, which can inspire and motivate other youth to take action and make a difference in their communities. This will help to create a culture of volunteerism and active citizenship.
We will measure our progress towards this goal through metrics such as the number of youth engaged, the number of youth trained, mentored, and supported through funding, and the number of youth-led social initiatives launched and their impact.
Next five-year impact goal: To become a leading global organization in youth engagement and social impact, empowering 100,000 youth to create and lead 10,000+ social initiatives, and providing a minimum funding assistance of $1000 per initiative.
To achieve this goal, we will continue to refine and scale our current strategies and explore new opportunities for growth and impact. This may include expanding our outreach efforts to new regions, developing new partnerships and collaborations, and exploring new funding opportunities. We will measure our progress towards these goals through metrics such as the number of youth engaged, the number of youth trained, mentored, and supported through funding, and the number of youth-led social initiatives launched and their impact.

Our approach to incorporating diversity, equity, and inclusivity into our work involves creating a welcoming and non-judgmental environment for youth. We strive to maintain gender balance in our leadership team and provide equal opportunities for all members of our community to participate and lead social initiatives. To further promote diversity, we will conduct sensitivity training and awareness workshops for our team and partners. We also regularly engage in dialogue with our community and youth to understand and address their unique needs and perspectives. To eliminate any barriers that may prevent full participation and success of marginalized groups, we regularly review and evaluate our programs and processes. Our ultimate goal is to create an environment where all individuals feel valued, supported, and empowered to create positive change in their communities
The business model of Captains Social Foundation is based on a social enterprise model where we generate revenue through donations, grants, and sponsorships from individuals, organizations, and government bodies. Our key customers are young people and the community, and our beneficiaries are the marginalized and underprivileged sections of society. We provide capacity development training, mentorship, leadership opportunities, funding assistance, resources, tools, networking, and collaborative partnerships to young people to help them ideate, design, execute, coordinate, and outreach youth-led social initiatives. This helps them to become active and engaged citizens and contribute to addressing social issues in their communities. We also provide support and resources to youth-led social initiatives to ensure that they create impactful and sustainable solutions at an appropriate scale. Our services are in demand because they empower young people to take an active role in volunteering and making a difference in their communities, which is essential for personal and professional development and for the social and economic development of the community.

Our path to financial sustainability includes a combination of sustained donations and grants, as well as partnerships with organizations and companies that share our mission. We plan to establish partnerships with companies and organizations that are looking to engage in Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) activities and align with our mission. We also plan to apply for grants from foundations and other organizations that support youth-led social initiatives.
We plan to raise funds through events and campaigns to create awareness about our work and the impact we are creating in the community. In the long-term, our goal is to create a self-sustaining model where the youth-led social initiatives we incubate become independent and self-supporting, and can contribute a portion of their revenue back to the organization to continue our work.
Our plan to achieve financial sustainability has had some success so far, including the following:
In August 2022, we received a funding of INR 10 lakhs through an incubation program, which allowed us to engage 5000 volunteers in over 50000 hours of volunteering.
In October 2022, we conducted our first online fundraising campaign, which was successful in raising an amount of INR 2,10,714.
