The Covid-19 pandemic increased the prevalence of mental health by 25% (World Health Organization, 2022). In addition, more than 19 million Indonesians aged over 15 years experience mental emotional disorders, and more than 12 million residents aged over 15 experience depression (Riskesdas, 2018). There are several problem solving that are often done, such as: (1) telling stories with friends (98.7%); (2) avoiding problems (94.1%); and (3) looking for information on how to solve problems from the internet (89.8%). However, some also end up hurting themselves (51.4%), or even become desperate and want to end their life (57.8%) (Kaligis, et.al, 2021).
Mental health services in Indonesia are considered to be lacking because there are only 0.29 psychiatrists and 0.18 psychologists per 100,000 residents. In addition, residents also want mental health services to guarantee confidentiality (99.2%), objective (98.5%), continuity (99.2%), and can be accessed online (84.5%). The existence of a negative stigma against mental health in the community also hinders seeking help at health services (Kaligis, et.al, 2021). This is exacerbated by several problems in accessing mental health services in Indonesia. One of them is the cost to access mental health services which is not cheap. The national cost for mental disorders (schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression and anxiety) in Indonesia reaches Rp. 87.5 trillion in a year (Puspitasari, et.al, 2020).
In Indonesia, the lack of knowledge regarding the importance of sustainable mental health treatment, the bad stigma that develops in society, and the high costs are problems for dealing with mental disorders. At the individual level, the things above greatly affect the ongoing treatment. In addition, mental health treatments of this kind require ongoing therapy. At least, every mental health problem requires more than 1x professional therapy. These things gave rise to mental health innovations based on artificial intelligence technology with various advantages compared to existing innovations.
There are two issues that we have outlined, mental health for Indonesians and access to mental health services. In addition, we have also conducted short interviews with people who work in the Mental Health Services Bureau. The result is that they still use conventional and expensive medical methods to treat patients. Based on this, it is necessary to create a system in the form of an application that can help young people know more about the importance of mental health.
Main feature:
1. Personal assistant: become a storyteller and be able to know the emotions the user is feeling (scanning). Edelweif can provide suggestions according to user needs.
2. Positive content: contains articles and content about mental health that are easy for users to understand. There are also games that can improve the mental health of users.
3. Report: after using the scanning feature, Edelweif will provide a report on the user's mental state, both daily and weekly.
4. Professional assistance: Edelweif will provide recommendations when the user's mental state is in a certain state.
This application can certainly be accessed and enjoyed by all people in Indonesia. For this start, the contents of the application are quite diverse, ranging from articles related to mental health, knowledge related to the ins and outs of mental health, to consulting services with professionals. The app is named "Edelweif" (here's one of the social media links: https://instagram.com/edelweif?igshid=YmMyMTA2M2Y=).
Edelweif is designed with artificial intelligence that will help young people to solve mental health problems. At a later stage, Edelweif will become a 24/7 mental health assistant. With its artificial intelligence, Edelweif will be able to perform face screening from its use (with commands from the user). Edelweif knows what kind of emotion the user is feeling, through facial screening. Users can also chat with Edelweif, and responses will be given according to what the user feels.
Edelweif can also provide suggestions and recommendations to solve problems that are being faced by users. For example, when the user feels anxious, it will be seen through facial expressions and Edelweif gives suggestions to take a deep breath or drink water. Edelweif will also provide reports regarding the mood/mental state of the user and provide suggestions for doing things that can improve mental health. Users can arrange for reports to be sent daily or weekly.
If a user is detected to have a serious mental health problem, Edelweif will recommend professional staff to handle it. Data and secrets from users will be safely stored in a database with double security.
Even though this idea is still new, Edelweif has already received support from Microsoft Corporation in the form of technology and credit facilities of USD 150,000 for development. We are sure that with additional support from various stake holders, Edelweif will develop more quickly and become a joint solution for dealing with mental health problems. An artificial intelligence application that can be used by all people in Indonesia.
After consulting with Microsoft Corporation, we are confident that Edelweif can be realized at an early stage. This stage is to fill out the application with information related to mental health and related content that is easy to understand. This is done while continuing to develop Edelweif's artificial intelligence. The timeframe needed to develop an early stage Edelweif is 6 months. this time
it will be enough with effective use and work to develop Edelweif. Some steps that need to be done as follows:
1. Recruit a research team to find information related to mental health
2. Recruiting a graphic design team for content creation purposes
3. Look for other sources of funding
- Enable continuity of care, particularly around primary health, complex or chronic diseases, and mental health and well-being.
- Indonesia
- Prototype: A venture or organization building and testing its product, service, or business model, but which is not yet serving anyone
Edelweif is not innovation-based concept, but it's was realized with several positive contents in social media, such as instagram. The positive contents help everyone can be more understand about mental health and the important for. This is the profile link of Edelweif instagram account within several contents https://instagram.com/edelweif...
Currently there are no users (Indonesian residents) who use the Edelweif application because it is still in the prototype stage. But referring to the results of the 2018 Basic Health Research (Riskesdas), the target market for this innovation is the Indonesian population aged > 15 years. This is because people aged >15 years are prone to mental health disorders. The size of the target market for the Edelweif application is 208 million+ Indonesian residents.
We have formulated three main goals for the development of Edelweif:
1. Get support from various stake holders and the government to carry out further research related to ethical elements, such as searching for samples of human facial expressions
2. Obtaining funding for the creation and development of mobile applications
3. Applying innovation as a whole to the Indonesian people
- Business Model (e.g. product-market fit, strategy & development)
- Financial (e.g. accounting practices, pitching to investors)
- Human Capital (e.g. sourcing talent, board development)
- Legal or Regulatory Matters
- Public Relations (e.g. branding/marketing strategy, social and global media)
- Technology (e.g. software or hardware, web development/design)
- 3. Good Health and Well-being
- A new application of an existing technology
- Artificial Intelligence / Machine Learning
- Behavioral Technology
- Imaging and Sensor Technology
