FemSTEM Paths by Civic Minds
Gender inequity in STEM education and professions is a pervasive issue with profound societal implications. It restricts women's earning capacity, exacerbates talent shortages in technical fields, and hampers innovation. In the United States, this disparity manifests early in life and progressively narrows the likelihood of women participating and thriving in STEM fields.
By middle school, boys are twice as likely to express interest in a STEM job, and by college, they are five times more likely to pursue a STEM career path. Even in the STEM workplace, male-dominated cultures, underrepresentation of women in leadership roles, and gender biases obstruct the successful retention and progression of women in STEM careers.
The COVID-19 pandemic has magnified these issues, with women in STEM fields leaving the workforce at double the rate of women in other sectors. Women entrepreneurs also face substantial obstacles in launching STEM-focused ventures, with less access to grants, loans, and equity-based funding than their male counterparts.
Our solution, FemSTEM, addresses the gender inequity problem within STEM education, particularly focusing on the 'leaky pipeline' phenomenon. This term refers to the decreasing proportion of women who continue in STEM from school to university and into employment. Our aim is to inspire and support girls and women in their STEM journey from K-12 education through to college and beyond. Through this, we will help address the underrepresentation of women in STEM, tackling the issue from its roots in the educational system.
Statistics from the National Girls Collaborative Project indicate that while girls and boys do not significantly differ in their abilities in mathematics and science, the percentage of women earning degrees in these fields is substantially lower. Our solution is targeted at this stark disparity, working to cultivate interest and encourage persistence in STEM subjects amongst girls and women. We believe our efforts can help to change the narrative and contribute to a more inclusive and equitable STEM culture.
FemSTEM is an innovative online learning platform that's specifically designed to engage, educate, and empower girls and young women in STEM disciplines. Using the power of AI and the project-based, interdisciplinary approach of the studio curriculum, we aim to close the gender gap in STEM fields from education to careers.
At its core, FemSTEM uses AI to create personalised learning paths for each student. The AI system analyses the student's strengths, weaknesses, interests, and aspirations, and designs a unique, engaging path through our robust STEM-focused curriculum. This ensures that every learner gets the right support and challenge at the right time, ultimately helping them to excel in STEM subjects.
Our curriculum features studio-based, interdisciplinary projects that mimic real-world problem-solving, encouraging students to apply their knowledge and skills in meaningful, impactful ways. For instance, our 'Social Robotics' studio engages students in designing and building custom robots, teaching them key concepts in robotics and emotional intelligence. Our 'Monumental Activism' studio allows students to dive into the social histories of their cities and design interactive installations, combining historical research with practical technology skills.
This two-pronged approach of personalised learning paths and immersive, real-world projects, backed by the cutting-edge technology of AI, makes FemSTEM a truly transformative solution. It's not just an education platform; it's a comprehensive, engaging ecosystem that fosters confidence, resilience, and a passion for STEM in girls and young women, preparing them to excel in STEM careers and become future innovators.
FemSTEM serves girls and young women in K-12 education across the United States, specifically those with an interest in STEM disciplines or those who have not yet discovered the potential excitement and opportunities in STEM due to lack of exposure or negative stereotypes.
To truly understand their needs, we continuously engage with students, teachers, and educational psychologists. We organize workshops, focus groups, and user testing sessions to gather feedback and insights. Moreover, we actively work with a diverse set of advisors who are experienced educators, administrators, and STEM professionals to ensure we're designing the platform and curriculum in a way that will resonate with and inspire our young learners.
FemSTEM impacts these girls and young women by providing them with an engaging, personalized STEM learning experience, helping them develop a passion for STEM subjects, build confidence, and see themselves as future STEM professionals. By offering real-world, project-based learning experiences, we help students see the relevance of STEM skills in various aspects of life and society, breaking down any preconceived notions they might have about these fields being 'too hard' or 'not for them'.
In addition, FemSTEM supports a more equitable representation of women in STEM fields by creating a learning environment that validates and uplifts female learners. By fostering a positive learning experience early on, we aim to increase the number of girls choosing STEM subjects in higher education, eventually leading to more women in STEM careers. Thus, FemSTEM is not only addressing immediate educational needs but also contributing to a larger societal shift towards gender equity in STEM.

- Government (B2G)
FemSTEM's plan for financial sustainability is designed around three key pillars: subscription revenues, strategic partnerships, and grants.
Subscription Revenues: The core of our revenue model is a subscription-based system, where schools, educational institutions, and individual learners pay a regular fee to access our platform. As we grow and increase the number of subscribers, we expect this to form a stable and sustainable revenue stream.
Strategic Partnerships: We aim to build partnerships with corporations and businesses in the STEM industry. They can participate by sponsoring schools, funding scholarships, or contributing to our curriculum with real-world challenges. These partnerships not only provide financial support but also add value to our curriculum, ensuring it stays relevant and up-to-date.
Grants: Although we do not rely solely on grants for our operations, we do see them as an important part of our financial plan, especially in the early stages. We will actively seek grants related to education, women in STEM, and technology to support the development and expansion of our platform.
Over time, as our subscriber base grows and our strategic partnerships expand, we expect to reduce our reliance on grant funding. The goal is to ensure that our platform is not only delivering significant social impact but also becoming a financially sustainable venture. We understand the importance of financial sustainability and are committed to achieving it while staying true to our mission of promoting gender equity in STEM.
While FemSTEM is still in its early stages, our team has already taken significant steps towards securing financial sustainability.
Strategic Partnerships: We have initiated conversations with potential industry partners who have expressed interest in sponsoring our platform and contributing to our curriculum. These partnerships may not only bring in funding but also strengthen the practical relevance of our curriculum.
Grant Applications: We have identified and applied to several grants focused on education, women in STEM, and technology. While we're yet to receive any grant funding, the positive feedback we've received encourages us.
Proof of Concept: Our team members have successfully implemented similar models in their previous ventures. For example, Nakiea Spaulding, our Director of Education, previously co-founded an educational startup that operated on a subscription model, securing several school contracts within its first year of operation.
These early indicators give us confidence in our financial sustainability plan. We understand that the road ahead involves continuous effort and adaptation, but we are optimistic about our ability to secure the necessary resources to make FemSTEM a success.
