The specific problem we are solving within the Gender Equity in STEM Challenge is the underrepresentation and gender disparity of girls in STEAM education. Despite progress in recent years, a significant gender gap still persists in the fields of science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics. This imbalance not only limits opportunities for girls but also hinders the overall progress and diversity of the STEM workforce.
In the communities we are working in within the US, the scale of the problem is substantial. According to the National Girls Collaborative Project, women constitute only 28% of the science and engineering workforce. The gender disparity is even more pronounced in certain STEM fields, such as engineering and computer science, where women represent only around 20% of the workforce.
These statistics highlight the urgent need to address the gender equity gap in STEM education. By ignoring the potential of half the population, we miss out on diverse perspectives, innovative ideas, and the full range of talent that can drive scientific and technological advancements.
Factors contributing to the problem of gender disparity in STEM education include societal stereotypes, lack of representation, limited access to resources and opportunities, and biases within educational systems. Girls often face cultural and societal pressures that discourage their interest in STEM subjects, perpetuating gender norms and reinforcing the perception that these fields are male-dominated.
Our solution, Surf Skate Science, directly tackles these contributing factors. By implementing this comprehensive financial sustainability plan, we can continue to deliver our program, keep it affordable for all, and provide scholarships to those in need. We remain committed to our mission of promoting gender equity in STEAM education and ensuring that financial constraints do not hinder access to quality educational experiences for students.
Our plan to achieve financial sustainability has yielded successful results through the acquisition of grants, revenue generation, and partnerships. Here are some examples of our accomplishments:
1. Grants: We have received significant grants that have played a crucial role in supporting our operations and program affordability. For instance, the Vela Ed Fund awarded us a grant of $360,000, which has provided substantial financial backing for our initiatives. Additionally, Stand Together granted us $25,000, enabling us to expand our outreach and impact. We have also secured a $10,000 grant from the Sheckler Foundation, which has contributed to the success of our programs.
2. Revenue Generation: Our revenue streams have proven successful in sustaining our work. The sales of our educational learning kits have not only provided valuable resources for students but have also generated revenue that supports our operations. The income generated from tuition fees for our in-person classes and workshops has further contributed to our financial sustainability.
3. Partnerships: We have formed partnerships with various organizations, including Jane Goodall's Roots and Shoots, Engineering Week, and others. These partnerships have resulted in smaller grants and funding opportunities that have supported specific projects and initiatives. By collaborating with like-minded organizations, we have been able to leverage their resources, expertise, and networks to further our financial sustainability goals.
The combination of grant funding, revenue generation, and strategic partnerships has been instrumental in our journey towards financial sustainability. These successes have allowed us to continue delivering our programs, keep them affordable for all, and provide scholarships to families facing financial constraints. As we move forward, we remain dedicated to diversifying our funding sources and securing additional grants, investments, and partnerships to support our long-term financial sustainability and maximize our impact.
