The problem we are addressing in the Gender Equity in STEM Challenge is the gender gap and lack of representation of girls in emerging technology fields, including virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), artificial intelligence (AI), and spatial audio. This issue persists across communities in the United States, leading to the underrepresentation of girls in STEM.
National statistics reveal that despite comparable levels of achievement in science and mathematics, girls' interest and representation in STEM decline as they progress through middle school, high school, and college. As a result, there is a significant gender gap in emerging technology fields, limiting the opportunities and participation of girls. Additionally, with the projected elimination of 300 million jobs due to AI, there is a pressing need to create new jobs and businesses.
Our workshop series directly tackles this problem by providing hands-on experiences and insights into VR, AR, AI, and spatial audio. Through presentations, demonstrations, and interactive activities, we immerse teens in these technologies to spark their curiosity, ignite their passion for emerging technologies, and bridge the gender gap.

Additionally, participants can visit our tech hub and access more advanced equipment.

In the meantime, we will leverage the state-of-the-art tools that the library already possesses during the workshops.

In addition to leading a diverse team that created a Pulitzer Prize-winning VR product, she has actively participated in STEM education initiatives, advocating for inclusivity and diversity in emerging technology fields. Bianca has also worked as an afterschool STEM teacher in Baltimore and served as a coach for hackathons, pitches, and debates for K-12 students. Our team comprises individuals ranging in age from their late 20s to their 70s, with some team members residing outside of Maryland, including deep South states like Alabama.

While FutureTech Explorers is still in its early stages, we have made significant strides in implementing our financial sustainability plan. As a result, we have achieved notable accomplishments, including:
Grant Funding: We are grateful for the grant we received from you, as it has been instrumental in covering the initial costs associated with curriculum design, workshop materials, and facilitator training. This funding has provided us with the necessary resources to develop and pilot our workshop series beyond the initial Enoch Pratt pilot.
Workshop Revenue: Through our partnership with Enoch Pratt, we anticipate generating $2,400 in workshop fees during our pilot phase. These fees will cover some operational expenses related to curriculum development and facilitator compensation. Generating workshop revenue is a key component of our sustainability plan, and we are encouraged by the progress we have made thus far.
Sponsorship: We are currently discussing securing sponsorship with a local technology company. If successful, this sponsorship will provide us with in-kind support in the form of virtual reality headsets and equipment for our workshops. Additionally, by receiving this sponsorship, we will have access to the necessary technology resources at a reduced cost, enhancing our program delivery without placing a significant financial burden on our organization.
