TuvutePamoja: Solving public health problems, together
Problem: What is the problem that we seek to address in one sentence?
Solution: A framework and platformto leverage the growing data science community in Nairobi to address public challenges, including in the public health.
How are we changing the world:
What is the scale of the problem in the communities you are working in,
and in the world?
How many people are affected?
What are the contributing factors to the problem that relate to your solution?
The community in Kenya. Africa needs to solve its problems, and this platform affords them with the opportunity to. There are two levels:
- The data science community
- The general population being affected by the health challenges
- Create a collaboration platform
- The platform can be used by individuals to post challenges in need of solutions to the community
- Build a community of solvers, that are willing to collaborate on public health challenges
- Create a reward system for the solvers to motivate them (eg, the challenge submitter can provide a reward)
- The challenges should be for the public benefit, and so we will target the governement, NGOs
- Create a vetting system for the challenges
- Support communities in designing and determining solutions around critical services
- Ensure all citizens can overcome barriers to civic participation and inclusion
- Concept
- New application of an existing technology
There are three areas our platform is innovative:
- The platform
- The community
- The challenges
Combining all the three creates a unique solution, that allows African Data Scientists to play a part in addressing their own challenges
- Artificial Intelligence for public challenges...modelling and prediction.
- Artificial Intelligence
- Machine Learning
- Big Data
- Social Networks
We have a vibrant Data science community, especially students who are looking for projects to learn and master their data science skills. This platform, and the community we plan to create will help solve the problems at hand.

Submitter pays a facilitation fee to support maintenance of the platform and provide reward to challenge winners.
By providing a platform to server governments, NGO's and international community interested in being part of a solution to African challenges, we can attract funding. Also, since the submitter may pay some money, the income from would be our path to financial sustainability.
