Aggregator food trading to eliminate middlemen
According to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), post-harvest losses in Sub-Saharan Africa can range from 15% to 50% depending on the crop and the specific context. While it's difficult to precise the exact number of farmers in Africa affected by post-harvest losses due to an unstable market, it's estimated that 500 millions of small-scale farmers across the continent are affected by this issue.
The lack of a stable market can make it difficult for farmers to sell their produce at a fair price, leading to lower incomes and higher levels of food waste. This have significant impacts on the livelihoods of small-scale farmers and their families, as well as on the broader food system and the environment.
Efforts are underway to address this issue, including the promotion of alternative marketing channels such as direct sales to consumers or participation in farmers' markets, as well as the use of technology and innovative solutions like aggregators to help connect farmers with buyers and reduce post-harvest losses. However, there is still much work to be done to ensure that small-scale farmers in Africa have access to stable markets and fair prices for their produce.
Food Bundles digital platform is a solution that enables aggregators to participate in the food distribution of a guaranteed market, while also providing small-scale farmers with a stable market and fair prices for their produce.
The Food Bundles platform provides a centralized platform for small-scale farmers to sell their produce directly to aggregators. The platform uses technology to connect farmers with buyers and enables them to negotiate prices and terms of sale directly. Through a network of aggregators who run operation, this helps eliminate the need for multiple middlemen in the value chain, ensuring that farmers receive fair prices for their produce.
Aggregators use their financial resources to participate in Food Bundles trading, after depositing their money in Food Bundles wallet, they purchase produce from farmers limited to the amount in their wallet found in Food Bundles platform. They vet quality, ensure that it meets the specific requirements of the buyers. This helps increase efficiency in the value chain and reduce food waste. They record the quantity accepted and the platform process digital payment to farmer mobile money.
The platform guarantees a market for the produce, which helps reduce post-harvest losses and provides a stable income for farmers.
The Food Bundles platform uses a combination of technologies, including mobile applications, online marketplaces, and data analytics, to facilitate transactions between its platform and farmers as well as the buyers. The platform also provides real-time information on market prices and demand, which can help farmers make informed decisions about what crops to grow and when to sell them.
The target population for the Food Bundles digital platform is small-scale farmers in Africa who are currently underserved by traditional markets and middlemen. These farmers often struggle to sell their produce at fair prices due to the lack of a stable market and the presence of multiple middlemen in the value chain.
By providing a centralized platform for farmers to sell their produce directly to aggregators, the Food Bundles platform aims to improve the lives of small-scale farmers by providing them with a stable income and fair prices for their produce.
The platform also helps reduce post-harvest losses by providing a guaranteed market for all aggregated produce and enabling farmers to negotiate prices and terms of sale directly with buyers. This can help increase the efficiency of the value chain and reduce food waste.
The exact income increase that small-scale farmers can expect from having access to a stable market through the Food Bundles platform will depend on a variety of factors, including the type of crop they produce, the local market conditions, and the prices negotiated with buyers.
However, studies have shown that by eliminating middlemen and providing farmers with direct access to buyers, small-scale farmers can often earn significantly higher prices for their produce. For example, a study by the International Food Policy Research Institute found that in Ghana, farmers who sold their produce directly to buyers through a mobile phone-based platform earned up to 50% more than those who sold through traditional channels.
In addition to higher prices, the Food Bundles platform can also help small-scale farmers reduce post-harvest losses and increase their productivity, which can further increase their income over time.

There are 20 aggregators, each supporting 550 farmers, we can estimate that the solution currently serves approximately 11,000 farmers.
The areas where financial capital is needed:
Product upgrading: In order to improve the Food Bundles platform and make it more efficient and user-friendly, financial capital may be needed to invest in software development, testing, and implementation.
Legal contract development: To ensure that the platform operates within legal frameworks and meets the needs of both farmers and aggregators, legal advice and support may be needed. This may require financial capital to pay for legal fees and consultation.
Asset acquisition: As mentioned earlier, acquiring assets such as cold trucks for the transport of food may require significant financial capital.
Marketing and outreach: In order to reach more small-scale farmers and aggregators, marketing and outreach efforts may be needed. This may require financial capital to pay for advertising, promotion, and other outreach activities.
Asset financing for the acquisition of vehicles such as trucks, vans, or other modes of transportation for the efficient distribution of produce from farmers to consumers could be a critical financial need for the Food Bundles platform. Transportation is a key factor in reducing post-harvest loss and ensuring that produce gets to market quickly and efficiently, which can ultimately benefit both small-scale farmers and consumers
- Human Capital (e.g. sourcing talent, board development)
- Product / Service Distribution (e.g. delivery, logistics, expanding client base)
- Technology (e.g. software or hardware, web development/design)
Food Bundles' solution of using an aggregator network model to participate in the trade of produce in a guaranteed market represents a new and significantly improved approach to addressing the problem of post-harvest loss and unstable markets for small-scale farmers.
By enabling aggregators to use their own funds to purchase produce from farmers, Food Bundles is able to create a stable market for small-scale farmers, which helps to reduce post-harvest loss and ensures that farmers receive a fair price for their produce. The platform also fixes prices to be paid to farmers, which provides further stability and transparency in the market.
This approach is unique in that it not only addresses the immediate problem of post-harvest loss, but also helps to create a more sustainable and equitable market for small-scale farmers. By empowering aggregators to participate in the trade of produce and providing them with a reliable platform to do so, Food Bundles is helping to create a more efficient and effective market for everyone involved.
In addition to the direct impact on farmers, Food Bundles' solution has the potential to catalyze broader positive impacts in the agricultural space. By providing a model for how small-scale farmers can participate in more sustainable and equitable markets, Food Bundles can help to drive broader changes in the agricultural sector, including increased investment in small-scale farming and more sustainable agricultural practices.
Our impact goal at Food Bundles is to transform the lives of small-scale farmers in Africa by creating a more sustainable and equitable market for their produce. We plan to achieve this impact goal by:
Scaling our solution to reach 1000 aggregators across three different markets in Africa. By expanding our network of aggregators, we can increase the number of farmers who have access to a stable market for their produce, thereby reducing post-harvest loss and increasing their incomes. 1000 aggregators supporting 250 farmers each, that would mean we are impacting a total of 250,000 farmers across three different markets in Africa. We will increase their incomes by 50%, this would lead to a significant improvement in their livelihoods and help to reduce poverty in their communities.
Providing technical assistance to farmers to help them improve their productivity and reduce post-harvest loss. We plan to do this by partnering with local agricultural extension services to provide training on best practices in farming and post-harvest management.
Increasing access to financial services for small-scale farmers by leveraging our platform to provide access to credit and other financial services. This will help farmers to invest in their farms and increase their productivity, while also providing a more reliable source of income.
By achieving these impact goals, we believe that we can transform the lives of small-scale farmers in Africa by creating a more sustainable and equitable market for their produce. We will measure our impact by tracking the number of farmers who participate in our platform, the amount of produce that is sold through our platform, and the increase in incomes for small-scale farmers. We are committed to making a transformational impact on people's lives and believe that our solution has the potential to achieve this goa
- 1. No Poverty
- 2. Zero Hunger
- 8. Decent Work and Economic Growth
- 11. Sustainable Cities and Communities
- 17. Partnerships for the Goals
Here are a few specific indicators that we are using to measure our progress:
Number of aggregators and farmers engaged: We will track the number of aggregators and farmers who are using the Food Bundles platform to sell and purchase produce, respectively. This will help us understand the reach of our solution and whether we are effectively engaging with our target audience.
Reduction in post-harvest losses: We will measure the amount of post-harvest loss before and after our intervention to understand the impact that our solution is having on reducing losses in the value chain.
Increase in income for farmers: We will track the increase in income for farmers who are using the Food Bundles platform to sell their produce. This will help us understand whether our solution is improving the livelihoods of small-scale farmers.
Customer satisfaction: We will regularly collect feedback from both buyers and farmers who are using the Food Bundles platform to understand their satisfaction levels and identify areas for improvement.
Growth in revenue: We will track our revenue growth to understand whether we are achieving our financial sustainability goals and whether our business model is working effectively.
The theory of change for Food Bundles is that by providing a stable market for farmers through the use of aggregator networks and our digital platform, we can significantly reduce post-harvest loss and increase the incomes of small-scale farmers in Africa. Our activities involve onboarding and training aggregators, facilitating transactions through our digital platform, and providing support to farmers on best practices for harvesting, storage, and transportation.
Our immediate outputs include the establishment of a network of aggregators, the use of our digital platform for transactions, and the adoption of best practices by farmers. Our longer-term outcomes include a significant reduction in post-harvest loss, an increase in farmer incomes by 50%, and the creation of a sustainable and scalable model that can be replicated in other markets.
We believe that our solution will have an impact because it addresses the root causes of post-harvest loss and low farmer incomes, which are primarily due to an unstable market and lack of access to off-taking contracts. By guaranteeing a market for farmers and fixing prices, we can provide them with a stable source of income, reduce post-harvest loss, and increase food security in the region. Additionally, by empowering aggregator networks and providing them with the necessary tools and training, we can create a sustainable model that can be replicated and scaled across different markets.
The core technology that powers Food Bundles is a combination of USSD and Android platforms, as well as a web-based dashboard for administration purposes. The USSD platform is used by farmers to declare their harvest, which enables them to receive information about market prices, receive payment, and track their sales. The Android platform is used by both aggregators and buyers, allowing them to access information about available products, prices, and payment options. The web-based dashboard is used by administrators to manage the platform, track sales and payments, and generate reports.
The USSD platform allows for a simple and easy-to-use interface that farmers can access using even basic mobile phones. This makes it possible for farmers in rural areas, who may not have access to more advanced technology, to participate in the platform. The Android platform provides a more advanced interface for aggregators and buyers, allowing them to access more detailed information about products and transactions. The web-based dashboard provides administrators with a comprehensive view of the platform, enabling them to manage operations more efficiently and make data-driven decisions.
Overall, the combination of these technologies enables Food Bundles to provide a comprehensive solution that is accessible to farmers, aggregators, buyers, and administrators, facilitating a more efficient and transparent food value chain.

we have implemented several strategies to promote diversity, equity, and inclusivity in our work:
Focused recruitment: We actively seek to recruit women and youth as aggregators in our network, as these groups are often underrepresented in the agricultural sector. By providing training and support, we hope to empower more women and young people to become successful entrepreneurs in the agricultural value chain.
Gender distribution in management: We aim to have gender balance in our management team, with equal representation of men and women in leadership positions. This helps to ensure that diverse perspectives are represented at all levels of the organization, and that decisions are made with the input of people from different backgrounds and experiences.
Inclusive training and support: We provide training and support to our aggregators and farmers in a way that is inclusive and accessible to everyone. This includes providing materials in local languages, ensuring that training venues are accessible to people with disabilities, and offering flexible training schedules to accommodate different needs.
Community engagement: We work closely with local communities to ensure that our program is responsive to their needs and priorities. This includes engaging with women's groups, youth groups, and other community-based organizations to understand their perspectives and involve them in program planning and implementation.
Overall, we believe that promoting diversity, equity, and inclusivity is not only the right thing to do, but also essential for the success and sustainability of our program. By empowering a diverse range of people to become successful entrepreneurs in the agricultural value chain, we can create positive social and economic impacts that benefit everyone.
