Developmental Milestones for the Disabled in Communities
To boost the livelihoods of the most marginalised
disabled people through innovative, educative and technological community based
empowerment programs that support social inclusiveness at all levels of society.
DMDC, applies home grown solutions in solving problems for marginalised groupings through capacity building projects that embrace technological advancements such as Facebook and Whatsapp. This helps to hamper dependence and serves as informal employment and reduces the consequences of destituteness in communities.
About 15% of the world's population lives with some form of disability, of whom 2-4% experience significant difficulties in functioning. In Zambia, about about 2 million women and men or 15 per cent of the population, have a disability. The problem is that disabled people are living in poverty and are among the most stigmatized and marginalised people on earth. They often live in isolation and are excluded from their communities, from the education system, from healthcare and other vital services. Sometimes, they’re even hidden away by their families. One of the contributing factors include fear of being stigmatised.
In a quest to directly and meaningfully improve lives, The target population sample encompasses all disabled people who are highly marginalised in our local community setup. Just as the saying goes like ' A disability is not an inability', after assessing their needs, and depending on the physical challenges one may present with, participants are asked to choose from a variety of activities to perform such as gardening, poultry, aquaculture and animal husbandry which serve as an informal employment inculcative of educational content on the aforementioned activities psychologically consumable. This boosts the self-esteem of the participants in a community fostering social inclusiveness and shared prosperity.
