AI-based translator for interactions with the deaf-mute communit
The deaf-mute community, a community a bit forgotten by society, a community that suffers from our same problems, such as: gender violence, wage gaps. We talk about the cost of their disability, a cost that more than 70 million people must assume just for being born without the ability to communicate like the rest of society, and of course, society does not strive to understand them.
We are going to create a translator especially to understand the Deaf-Deaf community, through Computer Vision
With this solution, we are giving "Speech" to this community, we are giving them the opportunity to express themselves, to communicate more easily with society, we are even talking about a real inclusion since it will be society who will incorporate us in their language.
In this instance, I am the only one enrolled in this initiative, however, I have a multidisciplinary team, among which we contemplate: a person who speaks sign language, a person who handles computer vision models, a person who handles time management, methodologies, etc. We are and we are able to achieve this goal.
In the first instance we wanted to apply to this Challenge in order to prove ourselves, however, in case we are not selected, we intend to work with our university to carry this out. Regarding the community, as we said before, we work with a person who speaks sign language who is a psychologist, and she is the one who showed us her need to bring society closer to true inclusion.
- Other: Addressing an unmet social, environmental, or economic need not covered in the four dimensions above.
- Concept: An idea being explored for its feasibility to build a product, service, or business model based on that idea.
We must set an example of inclusion, we must show the world that the problems associated with wage gaps, gender violence, domestic violence, rape, will not stop until we really focus on all communities, and how can we not focus on a community that can not speak or express themselves, much less communicate to the world how difficult it has been to live with such a disability?
Our proposal is Social, it comes to generate impact, it comes to set an example of inclusion, it comes to teach companies that people with disabilities are not disposable and are suitable for work.
We have approximately 3 types of evolutions. In the first instance we want the translator to be able to work with image recognition, after that, we will continue to strengthen its functionalities, for example: click on a word and it will show an image of how to say that word in sign language.
The main technology is artificial intelligence, specifically in the area of computer vision. Subsequently, we will seek to implement systems such as the translator DeepL to fortify the translations.
- Artificial Intelligence / Machine Learning
- Audiovisual Media
- Software and Mobile Applications
- Chile
We will initially focus on the sign language institute, where our first feedback will be from experts and students, to carry out a process of constant redesign (using the SCRUM methodology) and later on, to show it to companies so that thwy can train their employees, since in Chile there is a "labor inclusion law" that allows the companty to obtain a seal of inclusion
At this moment, we have problems of funding and support, so we want to apply to this Challenge. However, we can apply together with our university, considering that we may not hace enough support, let alone the resources
In this moment, we dont have any partners
customer segments: Mainly for company workers, then general public
Value propositions: Sign language translator that allows interaction with deaf-mute people through cutting-edge technologies.
Relationship with the client: New seal of inclusion for companies, which not only includes people with mobility difficulties, but also those who have a speech disability. General training with a discount to retain them.
Channels: we want to promote awareness in people, and for this we will do it by delivering a service and also downloading a mobile application
Sources of income: mainly through the training service for employees and the premium option of the application
Key resources: sign language teachers, people with knowledge of artificial intelligence, people belonging to a university or government entity, computers
Key activities: make ourselves known in the student-academic space to make ourselves known. Programming in artificial intelligence is fundamental.
Key partners: Instituto lengua de señas, Some university that believes and trusts in our project, would like to create partnerships with Sence (Chilean entity)
Cost structure: payment of professionals (salaries), transportation in case of requesting training for employees, costs associated with light-internet (since it requires a long time connected to the internet and electricity)
The development of the application is not very expensive, so we initially hope to receive donations like the ones provided by this Challenge. We also hope that some university trusts this beautiful project to be able to receive some of its resources and thus develop it more precisely. We want to be able to reach the Chilean government so that it is a new way of establishing inclusion seals and giving way to soda-mute people to actively participate in the business sector.
