Cakap Goes To School
Our initiative enables two-ways English group class between qualified teachers and students at schools in underserved and remote areas.
Cakap Goes To School initiative aims to solve 3 problems:
Uneven distribution of quality education in Indonesia by providing online live learning high quality teachers are able to reach out students from anywhere
Low engagement of one-way, video based online learning, we provide two-way learning interaction
Ineffective online learning delivery due to curriculum not optimized for online learning and teachers not used to teach with online tools
During the Covid-19 pandemic, online learning has become the only main method of learning delivery for students in Indonesia. This sped up digital adoption of education which offers great potential to even out access to quality education for students in remote areas.
However as Covid-19 began to recede, there is a growing push to return back to full offline class. According to an interview, survey, and evaluation on the full year online learning by the Ministry of Education and Culture (MOEC), few challenges arose during the period.
Among them, which will be the first problems that we are aiming to solve, were low engagement during the online learning because of ineffective online learning delivery due to curriculum not optimized for online learning and teachers not used to teaching with online tools.
For example, according to Acting Director of the Center of Data and Technology of MOEC, Muhammad Hasan Chabibie, 87% teachers only used online learning as a method to deliver and collect assignments.
The second problem will be the fact that starting from 2013, English has been discontinued as a mandatory lesson at primary level hence we often find out low level command of English amongst students. Anecdotally we even have often been approached to teach local teachers English as their level of mastery on the subject was not good enough.
Our main target market for this initiative will be the 20 million middle and high school students, along with another 20.5 million of primary students as secondary targets.
The initiative will attempt to solve the problems through:
Optimized materials for online learning as well as qualified teachers experienced in teaching online
Two-way online class that emphasizes on interactivity and project-based curriculum that is adapted from CEFR or school curriculum
Learning dashboard (LMS) for teacher to log in class and individual reports as well as track the learning growth of students
We use our own proprietary video conferencing technology as well as well-known platforms such as zoom to deliver the class. The class itself will be up to 25 students for optimal learning and can be integrated into an intra- or extracurricular of the school. We mainly focus on middle and high school as the main target, though we are not opposed to including primary if opportunity arises.
By going directly to partner with schools, we aim to introduce and increase students' interest in English early as we believe that having mastery of English has been an increasingly essential skill to have in the 21st century for upward social mobility when these students enter the job market.
Cakap aims to help 5000 people living in areas that lack resources, especially those located outside Java island, like Nusa Tenggara Timur, Nusa Tenggara Barat and Maluku. Our goal is to make education and career opportunities more accessible to students and other people who could benefit through Cakap Goes To School program. We also want to offer courses that teach foreign languages in addition to what is already taught in school.

Yes we have. According to our internal research, we have found that our 1000 potential beneficiaries require the English language to communicate better with the global community and advance their skills & careers. The research also concluded that online learning requires less mobility, therefore reduces transportation costs and better hours of productivity. Our potential beneficiaries find these as the most convenient option to focus and learn better since they are flexible about which time and place to study.
Cakap has partnered with the pool of social organizations on national level such as Kasih Nusantara, Filantra and CT Arsa Foundation giving scholarships to students in underserved areas such as Nusa Tenggara Timur, Maluku, and Bali.
- Improving learning opportunities and outcomes for learners across their lifetimes, from early childhood on (Learning)
- Scale: A sustainable enterprise working in several communities or countries that is looking to grow significantly, focusing on increased efficiency
Our initiative aims to provide free or heavily subsidized live, two-way interaction classes to students at schools in underserved communities while remaining financially sustainable. We aim to solve the inefficiencies of transportation costs and mobility so the students can learn better, anywhere and anytime.
We have a pool of native teachers and tutors to help the students learn speaking better, more confident and more interactive in a fun and two ways learning environment. We estimate that Indonesians in 2045 are able to climb up better in careers nationally and have a global stage since Indonesia has a vision to become the fourth largest economy power in the world. Not just an excellent storyteller but also a game changer. As our Commissioner Mr. Gita Wirjawan has said that if Indonesians are open and able to communicate with the international community, imagine how many Satya Nadella will emerge from Halmahera or perhaps Koto Gadang will become famous again because of the next accomplished diplomat.
In the coming year, our organization intends to collaborate with 100 schools to provide language education to over 2,500 students. Our goal is to empower our graduates to secure employment, educational grants, and opportunities for further advancement in their chosen fields. Additionally, we aim to improve students' proficiency in English and foster greater confidence in their communication skills. To achieve these objectives, we propose to establish partnerships with local government officials and schools, beginning with stakeholder mapping and interviews to identify areas of need and potential collaborators. We will also conduct due diligence to research the social investment priorities of stakeholders and engage in lobbying and negotiation to secure agreements for our program. Once agreements are in place, we will implement our project using tools such as Gantt charts and logical frameworks, while also developing a theory of change and impact measurement strategies, such as the COM-B Model and Kirkpatrick Model, to assess behavioral change in our beneficiaries. We believe that a top-down approach is necessary to drive meaningful change, targeting decision-makers and regulators rather than individuals. Ultimately, our efforts aim to promote social mobility, increase access to quality education, and drive economic growth in alignment with our vision of Human Resource Excellence and Indonesia Emas 2045, a national vision of prosperity, justice, and sovereignty on the country's 100th anniversary in 2045.
Our proprietary technology enables 2-ways learning interaction among Students and Industry Experts across Asia Pacific to learn and improve specific skills at their own terms, from anywhere at any time.
We have launched an application namely Cakap that enables students to have the classes and access to any available courses. Through this application, students can register an account, have the class and access to learning modules, submit assignments and automatically receive a certificate of completion after completing the class.
We also provide a dashboard for participants or students and program partners to monitor students attendance and score. The key technology will be a reliable video-conferencing tech as the foundation of the live classes. We use our own video-conferencing platform, zoom or GMeet depending on requirements.
- Software and Mobile Applications
- Indonesia
We are currently serving more than 2000 beneficiaries by the end of 2022. For the next one year until the end of 2023, we’ll be serving more than 5000 beneficiaries throughout Indonesia.
1. Technology
Internet penetration rate although has become widespread to all areas in Indonesia and cheaper is still of low quality thus even though students have access to internet, it stills very slow.
To solve this, we are committed to partnering with telco and institutions to help spread fast data plan along with this initiative (e.g. bundle free data plan for CGTS students)
2. Cultural
Indonesia is historically reluctant to spend on education as most still focus on natural resources development rather than improving digital and 21st century skills.
To solve this, we partner directly with schools as an entry point and give them free group class to give them a demo of fun, engaging English learning as well as reminding them the economic benefits of learning English
3. Access to talent
We have found that the teachers in Indonesia especially outside first tiers cities have not enough mastery of English and digital literacy thus we need also develop the teachers to expand this initiative
To solve this, Cakap have started an initiative (Cakap Teacher Academy) to increase English and digital competency of teachers by giving 6-weeks boot camp lessons, in which those with high aptitude for teaching English will get hired by us
We currently partner with:
1. School partner
We are working with our school partner by providing free English group class and gathering data such as student engagement, learning delivery to improve our product and solution
2. Corporate CSR and NGO
We are working with corporate CSR and NGO to expand our school network and reach as well as funding to ensure the program’s sustainability.
