Kompis Waste Bank
Indonesia has a big problem with Waste Management; we are the second largest plastic contributor to the ocean. Waste Bank is an Indonesia’s local wisdom initiative to collect recyclable waste using commercial bank model. The waste bank is established and managed by the community. People deposit recyclable waste instead of money to the nearest waste bank. The waste deposits convert to money and save as deposits at the waste bank. We create mobile apps for the waste bank, which could help manage waste bank professionally and reduce waste, especially plastic waste to the ocean and landfill. People could earn money through the deposits, and it could be exchanged to e-wallet payment and gold savings.
Indonesia considers as the second largest contributor to plastic waste to the ocean. This because we have no knowledge and lousy waste management system. If everyone has a good education on waste management and how to reduce, reuse, and recycle their waste, then we can have a clean ocean and green environment. Unfortunately, this is already becoming people’s behavior without caring about the environment. We need to increase their awareness and at the same time, change their lifestyle. In 2008, There was an initiative built by the community called “waste bank.” The waste bank is just like a commercial bank, but people deposit their clean recyclable waste in exchange for money. We create mobile apps to support waste bank management and utilize the deposits to motivate people. Currently, there is 7000 waste banks in Indonesia with 1.4 Billion Rp. transaction in 2017. However, they can be increased if we have an app to support and connect waste banks across Indonesia. This could provide more economical and environmental benefits for the people in Indonesia.
The waste bank is an initiative from our local community on how to reduce waste to the ocean. However, most of the waste bank cannot sustain due to the lack of connection between the recycling process. Our team runs waste bank but cannot find a buyer at a reasonable price. The long chain distribution to the recycling industry will make people get a low price for their waste. This makes them not valuing the waste and throw it away.
This app will integrate all three actors and connect them. This app will create transparency on the pricing and value of the recyclable waste. We make it online as mobile apps to make sure the app could be used for any users in Indonesia. This app will provide reasonable price, clear waste management, and economy benefits for all users in Indonesia. Each area could utilize three apps that we build and collaborate to create the ecosystem for recycling.
KOMPIS as waste bank apps will connect the users, waste bank management, and buyers (recycling factory). These are the three main actors in waste management for the community. We use AI and machine learning to learn and manage users’ behavior and lifestyle. KOMPIS apps have three leading apps.
1. User App; this app uses to manage the deposits and use it as e-payment or convert to gold saving.
2. Waste Bank; this app uses to waste bank in managing all activities inside the waste bank. The officer will check, weight, and record the waste collected from the user and exchange it for money.
3. Buyer App; this app uses for the buyer. All registered buyer could look for any waste bank who wants to sell their recyclable waste. This app will help to connect the buyer to waste bank so that they could get a reasonable price for the recyclable waste.
We provide integrated apps to connect three main actors in the recycling industry to create an ecosystem to reduce waste into the ocean. The users will be motivated because we give an exchange value for the waste they collected. Waste Bank will be easy to manage with apps so they can also help to educate users (people) to increase the recycling rate. Buyer can easily find suitable raw materials for the recycling industry. This app solution will empower the local waste bank to make easily operated and adopted by the local community. The app also will provide data on the recycling rate and how much economy benefit for the community. The AI and Machine Learning will analyze the people consumption based on the waste they produce. The waste bank established within 1000 people and people bring their recyclable waste to the nearest waste bank. All transaction and pricing will be shown on the apps and will be available for all. After waste bank has enough recyclable waste to sell then, the app will notify the buyer on which waste bank have recyclable waste to buy them.
The app will help create the ecosystem for recycling waste and empower waste bank as local wisdom initiative as well as increasing local economy.

We are using IT to collect the data for waste collection at the Waste Bank station. As we have proposed to empower "Waste Bank" as local wisdom model for waste management. We are building 3 apps which connect users, waste bank management and the buyers. The apps will connect all users and create ecosystem for waste management which can also collect data on how many waste people collected. We use blockchain technology for the platform which implement by android and web based application. We use AI and Machine Learning to analyse the data. Our goal is to reduce 70% waste from the domestic house. The 70% will consist of 50% food organic waste and 20% recyclable waste. This will reduce waste into the ocean and landfill.
We use blockchain for the waste bank system. We also use AI and machine Learning to analyse the big data collected.
We build android apps and web based apps for the 3 systems. We have 3 android apps and 1 website apps. The apps will use gamification to redesign users behaviour and motivate them in term of their own waste management.
Users can deposit waste in any waste bank connected to our apps and buyer also can buy from any waste bank.
We will empower local communities, especially women to run the waste bank and reduce waste to the ocean and landfills.
- Artificial Intelligence
- Machine Learning
- Blockchain
- Big Data
- Behavioral Design
We have bad behaviour in waste management. Using technology in redesign people behavior by implementing gamification technique will be good solution. People need to be educated and motivated for taking care their own waste.
We develop apps to give easy and friendly users' adapted regarding the technology. This will make it widely adapted by anyone who used the apps.
We believe that the system will empower the local wisdom "Waste Bank" to be widely use and bring waste bank to the new level.
We also can analyse people' behaviour regarding their consumption based on waste they produce.

We serve 100000 people. We hope to serve at least 1 million next year. In 5 years we have target to reach 10% of Indonesia population and 3 of southeast Asia countries.
Our goal for next year is to get at least 1 million users
Our goal in 5 yrs are to reach 10% of Indonesian population and 3 asean counties. We also will analyse the data center analysis for the apps to see people's behaviour from their waste.
We have barriers in financial and technical aspect. We need to invest more on human resource for the technical team and data center analysis.
As of now we use AWS technology to run our system so it could be flexible for larger impact.
We look for investment and collaborate with local government and private sectors in national and regional level.

We are partnering with Government for waste management where they have policy to be implemented. We provide solution inline with local wisdom to have better data collected.
We are partnering with some brand. Currently with REJUVE for making "smart bin" to collect their return bottle. Our apps connected to the smart bin so that the user will get point on every bottle returned.
We also partner with Waste Bank association to support them at the same time we validate their existence.
We also partner with waste entrepreneur association to be our buyer and validate their existence as well.
We share profit 5% from total transaction for each user. This aligns with our ministry of environmental and forestry decree about waste bank.
Waste bank will get 10% share and our company will get 5%. We also get profit from the payment transaction fee for utilities made using the deposits on our apps.
We started by investing our own money. Now we earn 5% from the profit sharing and payment service fee.
We also looking for investment and grant from local government to support our service.
We hope to get funding, technology support, mentor and scaling up from Solve.
