HESIN SOLUTION
HYBRID ENERGY SOURCE FOR IOT NODES
Energy management efficiency is a topical issue for Internet of Things (IoT) sensor networks because a sensor can be placed in harsh or hardly accessible places and must transmit data without maintenance. One characteristic of the IoT nodes is the high current peaks during the data transmission procedure. These current peaks can decrease the lifetime of the conventional power sources.
To completely avoid batteries, an eco friendly energy storing element is required. We identified it is supercapacitor.
Our novel solution consist of Supercapacitor bank and renewable energy source as pv panel, wind or water turbine, etc. It have required dc output, since IoT node deal with small power.
Our design is eco friendly and have a life span of minimum 10 years, which is thrice the life span of batteries.
A single supercapacitor will not replace battery since the supercapacitor cannot be charged and discharged at a time, so it require a unique circuit and method.
Global Iot market size is increasing exponentially every year. Hence the requirement, usage, manufacturing as well as waste dumping of batteries is increasing, our solution is in the correct time. Many IoT not based companies are depending on batteries. They are spending a percentage of their capital for maintenance of batteries, which can be saved by our design since we have a long run concept.
Government are promoting startups including in the domain of smart city solutions, agriculture, etc. They are also in the need of an hybrid energy source for long run and eco friendly along with the requirement of minimizing the maintenance cost.
And also, we have a greater social value since we are working to decrease the pollution.
We are a group of four members, currently doing Bachelor of Technology degree in Electrical Engineering stream . We are final year students of Sreepathy Institute of Management and Technology Vavanoor Palakkad.
We assisted an IoT node based project in our college TBI. From there we identified Energy Management efficiency is a typical issue of IoT nodes. The fastest charge or high current peak during active mode of node is decreasing the limited life cycle of batteries. From there we identified Supercapacitor is the future of batteries and can be applied here. Since fast discharge is character of supercapacitor, their life span will not decrease and the will not get heated and burst like batteries.
Government is supporting manyi iot node based startups.
NORION solution is a company incubated in our college TBI. Their project has potential of 80 crores and 10 crores of that is for the power source part. We had a discussion with them and they showed interest, so if we provide power to them, our turnover will be 10 crores.
And also we had discussion with zero space innovation lab Sharjah, they have a live projects in smart City solutions. They also showed a little interest in our idea.
Also many IoT node based companies are currently depending on batteries.
- Taking action to combat climate change and its impacts (Sustainability)
- Prototype: A venture or organization building and testing its product, service, or business model
All the alternatives are not efficient. The are reducing communication gap, powering the node directly from hybrid source, replacing batteries.
Most common method batteries have limited life span since our noval desigh can have minimum 10 years.
Upon successful implementation, we develop IoT nodes along with our power source to deploy.
Supercapacitor is the main component and power them from light or air or from water by solar panel or turbine, etc.
A supercapacitor cannot replaced a battery directly, because the supercapacitor cannot be discharged and charged at a time. Therefor it require a unique system and circuit to power the node all the time without fail.
