TourAble
A booking platform that connects travelers with disabilities with accessible accommodations and travel options in Uganda.
My business idea is trying to solve the lack of accessible accommodation, and travel options in Uganda for travelers with disabilities. Many individuals with disabilities face barriers when it comes to planning and booking vacations and trips, as there are often limited options for accessible accommodations, and travel options. This can be frustrating and disheartening for people with disabilities, as it can limit their ability to fully participate in and enjoy travel experiences. According to the Uganda Bureau of Statistics Census Report (UBOS 2016) indicated that 12.4% of the Ugandan population lives with some form of disability implying that approximately 4.5 million people are affected by this problem.
The consequences of this problem are significant, as it can lead to feelings of isolation and exclusion for people with disabilities. It can also prevent individuals with disabilities from being able to fully participate in and enjoy travel experiences, which can have negative impacts on their overall well-being and quality of life. It also leads to difficulty for travelers with disabilities to find and book accommodations and travel arrangements that meet their needs, as well as potential barriers to accessing tourism and other activities in Uganda.
According to a study conducted by the Uganda National Association of the Deaf, only 10% of public places in Uganda are accessible to individuals with disabilities. This highlights the need for a business like this online booking platform, which can connect travellers with disabilities to accessible accommodations, and travel options for individuals with disabilities. By addressing this problem, we can improve the quality of life for people with disabilities and promote inclusivity in the tourism industry in Uganda.
Here's a simple overview of how it will work:
Customers will visit the website and create an account (if they haven't already done so). They would then search for accommodations, car rentals, or tour companies based on their location, dates, and other preferences. The website would display a list of options that meet their search criteria, including information on the accessibility features of each option.Customers would be able to compare prices and read reviews from other travelers to help them make their selection.Once they have chosen their preferred option, they would be able to book it through the website and pay for it using a secure payment system. The website would then confirm the booking and send the customer a confirmation email with details of their reservation.
To enable these features, the website will likely use a combination of web development technologies and processes, such as a database to store information on accommodations and other travel options, a search engine to allow users to find and compare options, and a secure payment system to process bookings and payments. The website might also use technologies such as responsive design and accessibility standards to ensure that it is accessible and user-friendly for people with disabilities.
My target population is travelers with disabilities who are visiting Uganda, either as Ugandan tourists or as foreign tourists. This group of people currently face challenges in finding and booking accessible accommodations, and travel arrangements that meet their needs and allow them to fully participate in and enjoy their travels.
My business idea aims to address these challenges by providing a platform for travelers with disabilities to easily find and book accessible accommodations, and travel options in Uganda. By offering a wide range of options and allowing users to compare prices and accessibility features, my website could make it easier for travelers with disabilities to find and book accommodations and travel arrangements that meet their needs. Additionally, by providing personalized travel planning services and assisting with the transportation, my website would further support travelers with disabilities in planning and coordinating their travels.
Overall, my business idea has the potential to significantly improve the lives of travelers with disabilities in Uganda by making it easier for them to access tourism and travel opportunities, and by enabling them to fully participate in and enjoy their travels.
Since my solution is still in idea /concept stage I am working alone. However I plan on bringing other qualified people on board soon. For the past four years I've been volunteering with youth led organizations and organizations of persons with disabilities. ThWorking as a volunteer with various NGOs has equipped me the experience and skills such as leadership, project management and coordination, Budgeting. My volunteer jobs have helped me gain knowledge on disability rights, team work, project management and leadership. And my degree in International Business gives knowledge on business management.
I am a disabled person (wheelchair user) so I know and can relate to most of the challenges that my fellow travelers with disabilities are facing.
I have researched about the state of tourism accessibility in Uganda. I have also carried out a market research about potential partners and users.
I have experience of over 3years working with organizations of persons with disabilities and this has helped me gain knowledge on how best we can make tourism accessible and inclusive.
- Other: Addressing an unmet social, environmental, or economic need not covered in the four dimensions above.
