Los Vango's 006
Based on Solving Sdg Number 6, I Plan on utilizing River Tana by digging a well a few kilometers from it and using pipes to connect water to the streets.
Clean water and sanitation is one of the SDGs that The United Nations is striving Its best to solve. However, Los Vango as I like to call it and my home town has had struggles when it comes to water. A Village home to almost 3000 -5000 people has a very minimal access to water And when it is available, It is very expensive and unsafe for human consumption. Just to give a brief explanation , Vango is located on the verge of Garissa County in the North Eastern Part Of Kenya. The Climate is hot and dry and thus it does not support growth of forests. Rain in this part of Kenya is considered a miracle for two main reasons , First is that it rains Thrice a year at most. Secondly, It is because when It rains , it is when The Streets are temporarily relieved of this problem. Why is that ?? It is beacuse , the gateway to Vango Is a Relatively wide valley commonly known as " Lagha " whereby when it rains , the sandy soil in this area drains water quickly. As a result teenagers in this areas dig home made wells known as " Visima" . The Wells are about 10 - 15 metres. When this happens there are multiple contrasting effects on the Street at large. One is that, The water problem is temporarily curbed out as the water could be used for Drinking, Cooking , Washing and Bathing; Basically, it does all the domestic chores. However, the education level is greatly affected. This is because the guys digging the wells are students aging from 10 - 20 years. These students put their education on hold during this time as they spent 10 - 12 hours of their time in the wells as they see it as away of generating income where one jerican is sold out at 5 kenyan shilling. Additionally, It also serves as a Skirving spot for the 6- 10 years as well. Thirdly, The level of illetracy in this area is very high. The spots at which these wells are dug is totally unhygenic. This is because there are residents who use this valley as their dumping place while others disgustingly use it as their toilet place. So you find when it is rains , the running water collects all the dirt in the valley and dumps it to the nearby River Tana; But as this happens , particles of human faeces are left behind and the youth do not care whether the ground they are digging on if it is hygenic or not. They dig wells and the residents use it a source of water for consumption and they fall ill to water borne diseaases such as Cholera and typhoid.
My solution is simple but effective. Vango lies on the East of the Great River Tana. Between Vango and River Tana is another Village known as Bulla Rahma. My solution is to Advantageously use River Tana by : First , Dig a 10 - 20 meter well approximately 5 Km away from this River. Now that the well is just a few kilometres from the Source, It will be almost impossible for it to dry. The well will be connected with almost the same technology as the one used in Zam Zam well in Saudi Arabia. The well will be connected with pumps pipes which will pump water from the well , The pump wells will then be connected to the carrier pumps which will now be resposible for the carrying of water from the well to the streets where multiple main water point will be situated. The water point will have like 50 - 100 sub water points to make the whole process of easier for the residents and to avoid congestion while fetching water.
My solution is deliberately based on serving two significant groups who have been largely affected ; Women and School going children. The Scarcity of water has had severe consequences on the school lives of these children. First and foremost, the rate of absentism and low attendance among the school going children is increasing day by day. This is because as children are forced out of school into these "laghas", It contributes to them missing classes ; Eventually, it becomes a habit and they don't see the essence of learning. This however is not their fault, it is the circumstances that has forced them into leaving school. In their case, They only have two options, either they obey their parents and play the "Best child " or disobey them and meet more and serious consequences. It also results into school drop outs not only for the girls but for the boys as well. Not only are boys forced out of school but girls as well; How does this happen? Girls are only perceived as people to sit back home and make sure when food is there, the family should not ask why the food is not served , rather they are obliged to do so. The boys are the ones supposed to create some shallow wells as a source of water but it is the girls that are obligated to go for the waters in jericans. These girls eventually see this place as a chiil out place for making stories with baddies but in no time at all , Cases of unwanted pregnancies come up. Girls have been imprignated and they have no clue who the father of the baby is. All these contribute to them failling in the internal assesments which in turn leads to their failure in external assesments.from a personal point of view , In 2017, My 17 year old neighbour who used to be so bright with her report speaking for her was approached by a boy in this area and she got lured into immature relationship. As time went, Her academic form would significantly deteriorate and no one could guess the issue. It took as only 3 months to find out that she was pregnantand at that time she was in class 7 which is basically a junior school. She had to stop schooling and focus on her pregnancy. After giving birth, she tried to make a comeback but unfoutunately that was the end of her. There are also recruitments for our boys into gangs who sell marijuana. The most famous of them'll being "Kayole" - A local gang made up of 97 % School drop outs whose theme is only Violence and voilence. They are widely known for killings , theft and other crimes. Imagine , there was a time these gang members created a football team and they named it Costa Rica and they got themselves registered into the local league,,, No one imagined let alone dream of costa rica would make it to the finals but they did with great plays as well even though they were beaten by eventual winners Rangers. But they showed us not only do they have academic excellence in them but great talents as well. We talk about wanting people to transform the world ,But we ain't ready to support them , all we do is critisize them. Imagine if they hadn't dropped out of school , Imagine if they took football seriously. Secondly, the women; Again this problem contributes to many struggles of women in this society. One of the struggles include women spending a lot of time especially when it does not rain looking for water which directly affects the daily household chores especially if girls in that society are immature. Again getting water from the laghas has also contributed to women fighting for the scarce resource which escalates into being a clan dispute. That is is the reason that I solely believe that if I could get the support and make good use of the nearby river , It would have solved not only major but the minor issues as well. To the target population , It will have reduced the retention rate among school going children. Unwanted pregnacy will be an issue of the past. Education value will highly increase. People will realise their talents and get a chance to nurtute them. Water borne diseases and outbreak of outragious diseases will deacrease at a high rate and Above all there would be enough and clean water.
Actually , There is no team that is put together. This whole idea was developed by My dad and I after we had moved from Garissa to this place and found these harsh living conditions. So it would be safe to say that My dad and I are the team leaders. About understanding the experiences of those we serve, I would be giving my honest opinion when I say that we have had the first hand experience. My family and I and these people have had the experience of searching for water everyday with togetherness; So we are just representatives who have volunteered to take on the innitiave of trying to solve this problem.

The Uniqueness of my solution or what I think gives it an upper hand is the fact that it in fact won't solve the problem of Clean water and sanitation but also it will be indirectly contributing to quality eaducation which is also placed at number 3 in the UN SDG's. How exactly?? The Government of Kenya has been very critical and sacarstic towards people from this country , particularly From Madogo Area. They have been constantly saying that kids from this part of the country have not been performing in the national examinations , consistently failling for the past 3 decades while kids from the central have been doing exemplary well. I find these claims laughable and sacarstic; This is because the Government apparently wants kids from these part of the country to fail , Massively contributing to their failure while blaming them. The Government have never questioned or cared why things are turning out this way,,, It has not provided kids in this area with the right mind to study. Is it even relevant for child to go to school and study with full focus when he or she knows that their dad does not want to care what their younger siblings will sip for the day? They know if we leave for school,, our mother will busy roaming about for 20 km searching for water ; they decide No, We will go search for water and let mom stay at home and look after our younger siblings. But as they are in this process of playing the best child , the other kids from other parts are busy revising and learning but at the end of it all, The Government want to put them in the same bracket. Moreover, as they are doing so , they meet people who lure them into gang activities such as stealing , robbing and drug trafficking and after all is said and done , the blame is still put on them. My solution will ensure that the current generation and the generation to come will fully concentrate on Education and nurturing their talents. It is a mere concept but if it is fully supported , It could bring about massive transformation for the betterment of the world which is what majority if not all of us are working towards.
Provision of Clean water
Reduce the Number of immature pregnancies
Decrease the Number of School dropouts
Actually, My main goal is providing a water point that has a high level of hygiene for My village. I believe that if I fulfill my goal of providing clean water then I would have solved these other two targets.
Even though I am not 100 % sure but I think that Biotechnology resonates more with my solution because it will involve the use of science in either way to solve this problem.

My solution is currently at a a concept level. So it is fair to say that most of the criteria in this question are not applicable to my solution.
Financial
Through the years, this place has been a home for people from the humbliest of backgrounds. The idea is there, the planning is already done but it is only the finance to make it a succcess that is hindering the solution.
