AMAL XR
According to the World Health Organization, up to 30% of world population live with a condition that benefits of rehabilitation. In low income countries, up to 50% of the population does not receive the rehabilitation they require. In recent years, VR tools have been successfully applied to help recover patients. VR is said to accelerate recovery from 2 to 3 times. Recently, some COVID-19 recovered patients have also suffered from disability caused by some neurological damages.
The classic rehabilitation process is slow because of the difficulty of moving around in some cases and the lack of patient involvement given the non-interactivity of the sessions. In addition, classic rehabilitation has difficulties to set up follow-up KPIs which make it possible to track the evolution and the improvements to better target the progress of the sessions. Virtual reality could be combined with conventional rehabilitation for the improvement of arm or leg movement control after stroke and various other diseases such as post-Covid syndromes. The classic rehabilitation process is generally slow, virtual rehabilitation can speed up the process up to two to three times. And they give patients the ability to practice daily activities in a virtual world.
The particular case of disability amyotrophic lateral sclerosis affects as many as 30,000 in the United States, with 5,000 new cases diagnosed each year. This desease could be treated by virtual rehabilitation as the one we are proposing.
The solution makes use of widely available a smartphone or a laptop where the camera detects the patient's movement and transcribes it into a virtual world with actions/missions to be carried out adapted to the patient's condition and his motor skills to encourage him to improve his gestures.
Our 2D tracking solution uses a smartphone or laptop camera for motion detection. This same device performs the data processing. This technology allows our project to be very accessible to therapists, even in disadvantaged regions, which allows us a significant penetration of our solution. The other competitors use specific hardware which is in some cases even obsolete (kinect: out of production by Microsoft) and depends on the availability of these auxiliaries. Our solution can be applied with simple tablet or laptop. This consideration opens the door for greater flexibility for home treatment and tele-rehabilitation.

The majority of the competitors use Kinect technology which is no longer developed by Microsoft and thus becomes obsolete. In addition, competitors solution are dedicated for high incomes countries and requires special hardware, making them not easily accessible for low incomes countries. This gives us a great competitive advantage as our solution uses Tablet and Laptop frontal cameras. Our solution also presents different display modes (Tablet, laptop, TV, datashow) which could be used by rehabilitation centers according to the medical contexts.
Finally, the technological accessibility of our solution makes it possible to target not only low incomes countries, but also developed particularly remote regions as well as cities suffering from saturation in the health care services.
2022 Rehabilitation centers in developing and low incomes countries
2022-2023 Home virtual rehabilitation
2024-2025 Live Tele rehabilitation
Number of active users
KPIs for patients recovery progress
Number of recovered patients
All these KPIs should respect local regulation regarding the processing of patient medical information.
Home therapy solution with medical prescription will help patients in remote areas to practice virtual rehabilitation at home reducing the number of times they have to frequent rehabilitation centers. This will accelerate the healing process. The patient engagement is more prominent with our propose interactive scenarios. The benefit behind combining classic rehabilitation with the virtual one has been proven by many research helping accelerating the recovery process from two to three times. In the future we are also considering adding further features such as remote telemedicine rehabilitation sessions will be interactive between the therapist and patient who will be no longer obliged to go to the rehabilitation center for several times.
We are using tablets or laptops frontal cameras for motion tracking and data processing. The solution relies on 2D color tracking. We are planning to use also Arkit library in IOS devices for 3D tracking which allows us to develop new specific scenarios. We are also developing our low cost sensor hardware for more tracking precision in the context of recovey evaluation dedicated for rehabilitation centers.
