Upenyu Health Application
1. Doctors and nurses have no way of educating people at home
2. For someone to access health services, in some areas they have to travel long distances, in some they do not know what specific services a health service provider offers before going there and being told the service they require is not there
3. Applying for funeral service policies, medical aid etc, is usually done manually and so the integration of systems into these processes is minimal.
4. Some pharmacies will not have specific drugs and it will be useful for the customer to know before arriving at a specific pharmacy what they can get there and what they can not.
I developed an application called Upenyu and the main aim was mental health. I also suffered quite a few ordeals during my life and the app was inspired by that. The application works on both Android & iOS. It's created using React Native and has a cloud database. The current version of the application has a chatbot which has details about various diseases(bio, symptoms, prevention), it also has a section with a list of all(possibly) hospitals and pharmacies in Zimbabwe which i gathered myself from Google, so the list can also be accessed offline, it has a suicide prevention calendar which has tips for the general public on how to ensure they stay with a healthy mind, factors to prevent suicide and also a list of service providers, and i included you as well on that list. It has a health feed as well, where I post an article, also BMI calculator, and one health tip.
So basically doctors and nurses can help patients from home in a way instead of patients always coming to the hospital for something minor. The general public can access health services be it funeral policies, medical aid societies, and other health service providers. The market potential is huge. Because health affects everyone, the potential for growth is massive and covering spaces for the community which they do not see currently which increase health costs to them can help massively.
The application has already won 2 awards, first Ignite Step Up Campaign 2020 in the health category then recently Ignite Pitch Contest 2021 where it came out first among other startups/companies. I am not a health expert and neither do I have the information that the app needs to go further, I am just a developer with a vision and I feel with people like you this application can go far. I have also developed some notable health applications for some companies and so I know the market and their challenges. I recently was discussing with people in my community walking around trying to assess whether these challenges are actually present and discovered this solution is needed more than ever.
- Optimize holistic care for people with rare diseases—including physical, mental, social, and legal support
- Mitigate barriers to accessing medical care after diagnosis which disproportionately affect disinvested communities and historically underrepresented identity groups
- Empower patients with quality information about their conditions to fight stigma associated with rare diseases
- Promote community and connection among rare disease patients and their advocates
- Growth
I applied in 2020 after having researched about MIT and I was impressed by their drive to empower others. It did not work that tine but I believe this year's theme applies to me more. I am just a software developer, I am not into health, that's why the application did not get any notable traction. I also do not have the money to market and continually maintain it and so thats why I need assistance. Hopefully this will work, I have a lot of ideas for the app which I believe will really shake the health services in my country, Zimbabwe but can also be applied to other countries as well.
Currently the space for health applications is vacant especially in Zimbabwe. And having seen the response of people to the application prior to its launching, i believe it can unlock a door that can broaden up that space in the health industry. It will definitely change the market and disrupt how health service providers communicate with the general public.
Having at least 50000 users on the application. This can be achieved by marketing the application. Marketing is the most important aspect for this application as this helps get the message across to the general public.
1. By number of people (Reach)
2. By capital raised for the under privileged (because the application serves the community, its important to also help those who cannot attain these services)
3. By the education increase in knowledge in the community
Because health impacts everyone and this means the effect of the service will be of greater importance to the community.
