ASDO Research System
The main problem is the difficulty of publicize scientific research and finding volunteers.
Because to carry out a scientific research, researchers go to a health or teaching institution, in which volunteers can be identified according to the inclusion criteria of their research, but when these researchers come across an old medical record or an outdated contact of the volunteer, this generates the difficulty of finding the volunteers and disseminating the research to them.
In addition, researches in virtual environments are usually carried out through online forms, such as Google Forms, Forms App, or the survey website itself, and these forms need to be shared in various means of communication, spending a lot of time to publicize the research and find volunteers, considering that these possible volunteers are not centralized in a single means of dissemination, where it is possible to identify their profiles and to classify them within the inclusion criteria of a research.
ASDO will be a virtual platform, available in an application and website, where researchers will be able to apply questionnaires, conduct interviews via phone calls and schedule the in-person participation of volunteers.
There will be two types of research available: the “unique research” (with one step) and the “continuous research” (with more than one step).
Volunteers can participate in 4 different ways:
- Questionnaire: the volunteer will answer a self-administered online questionnaire;
- Call: the volunteer will respond to an interview through a call from the researcher;
- Sending documents: the volunteer can send documents through photo files (for example: exam results);
- In person: the volunteer will be invited to attend the researcher's institution, on the day and time that will be scheduled on the platform.
The objective is to improve the efficiency of carrying out scientific research involving human beings.
Operation:
1) Volunteers will access and register on the platform, filling in their socioeconomic and health data;
2) This data will be compiled and made available anonymously in the "ASDO Database", so that researchers can see what audience of volunteers the platform has;
3) ASDO will receive the researches already approved by the Ethics Committees, and the researcher will select the type of research and the type of participation, and will also select the type of pre-selection, which can be from the "ASDO Database", or through a questionnaire, or through the results of articles.
4) ASDO will publicize the research on the platform, sending notifications to volunteers;
5) The volunteer can participate: by questionnaire; per call; Sending documents; or in person;
6) ASDO will send the results to the researchers;
7) Researchers will have to publish a scientific article in a journal;
8) Researchers will communicate to ASDO where the article was published;
9) ASDO will send a notification to the volunteer stating where the article was published.
To get volunteers to participate in the research and their registration on the platform, we will work on marketing the platform with strategies to raise awareness of the importance of volunteering in scientific research. In addition, the recruitment of volunteers will be gradual. We aim for anyone to be able to register on the platform (only people over 18 years of age can participate in the surveys, in accordance with the rules of research ethics of Brazil) and initially we will seek to attract researchers, because it is necessary to have surveys on the platform to keep volunteers accessing the platform and also, because a researcher can volunteer in another research (the number of researchers is large). Even if initially the platform does not have a relevant sample, the researcher can use the platform only to publicize the research, as the platform will not require that the research has only volunteers registered on the platform, and the researcher can continue doing the research in a traditional way, where it will be possible to mix volunteers who are registered on the platform with those who are not registered, for this the researcher will only need to ask the volunteer if he has a registration on the ASDO platform, if he already has he will have to inform his registration code on the platform , thus, there will be no risk of having duplicate participations in the research and the researcher himself will be promoting the platform, in this traditional way of doing the research.
Another action of the platform will be that volunteers will also be able to request an “Emergency Research”, promoting greater interactivity of volunteers on the platform. The proposal of the "Emergency Research" will be to apply a questionnaire to a population affected by an urgency or emergency quickly, such as in cases of floods, fires, dam failure, outbreaks or epidemics, where for each case there will be a specific questionnaire. with questions to know what is really happening with the population. For this, ASDO, together with a team of specialists, will previously develop questionnaires that can be applied in this type of situation. For the functioning of the "ASDO Emergency Research System" on the platform, the proposal is that anyone can request an "emergency research", for which the person will choose which is the case of urgency or emergency, the place, the day and time it started, describe the case in more detail, inform if there has already been a request for assistance to the place and inform your identification and contact. For example, a healthcare professional who notices a high number of COVID-19 patients in their institution can request an emergency survey on the platform. Subsequently, ASDO will verify the veracity of the urgency and/or emergency and will publish the research on the platform within
One way to make the platform's sample of volunteers have a more comprehensive profile will be to make the "initial research", where volunteers will inform their socioeconomic and health data, also contain questions about the data of their family members and members their residence, so if you have elderly people who do not access the internet or who are illiterate who are not registered on the platform, the "direct volunteer" who registered you as your family member or member of your residence may you receive a notification to disclose the research to that person who is the "indirect volunteer", then this person who does not have a registration on the platform can go to the researcher's institution to participate in a survey with face-to-face participation. Thus, in the ASDO Database, the profile of "direct volunteers" and "indirect volunteers" can be viewed.
This problem is found among researchers, such as undergraduate and graduate students, professors, health or social professionals, among others, who work with clinical research or academic research, from undergraduate research, final paper, or other research, involving data collection and/or experimental intervention in humans.
According to the National Council of Research Ethics, there are more than 760 thousand researchers in Brazil.
ASDO will also support the recruitment of volunteers for the Contract Research Organization (CRO), which are companies dedicated to developing or supporting clinical studies, such as research for the testing of drugs and/or medical devices.
The main existing research platforms work for market survey, where they generate financial advantages for their participants, making it impossible to carry out scientific research, from which they seek volunteering in Brasil. Examples of such market surveys platforms are "Toluna", "Survey Monkey" and "Google Opinion Rewards". As a result, most scientific research that is applied online needs to be disclosed individually, such as through online forms, for example through GoogleForms questionnaires or from a research website. However, this way it takes much more time to recruit volunteers.
Thus, we can consider that the ASDO platform will be an innovative platform by centralizing volunteers and scientific research in a single place, considering the various types of research involving human beings, which can be research in the social or health area, clinical or medical research, or cohort study, or any type of research involving human beings, as any of these researches can be classified with the type of unique or continuous research and with the methodology involving the type of participation by questionnaire, by call, by sending documents or face-to-face.
CEO: Andressa Silva studies at the Federal University of Minas Gerais. In Brazil, Federal Universities are the main drivers of scientific research in the country. Andressa conducted a survey to assess the effectiveness of the fighting smoking program offered by primary care health Center. The research was conducted in a municipality in the interior of the state of Minas Gerais and consisted of interviewing program participants to find out if they had actually stopped smoking after one year of completing the program. It was very difficult to find the participants of the program, when going to the health Center, we took the list of all the participants of the program to combat smoking, there were 8 health Center with 15 participants in each health Center, we expected to interview 120 people. However, many had already moved or the health Center did not have its telephone number updated and even with the help of the Community Health Agents, we were only able to interview 33 people who participated in the program. We believe that, like this research, several other researches can be carried out to evaluate the performance of primary health care, since conducting a scientific research is an objective way of monitoring primary health care, as a researcher prepares a research project in order to produce a relevant indicator.
Social Networks: Ludmila Godoy understands social networks, where it will be very useful to promote ASDO to attract volunteers.
Design: Matheus Prado is fluent in English and has a degree in design and will develop the conceptual prototype of the platform.
We believe in the potential that the platform has and we are working hard to make it work.
- Provide actionable, accountable, and accessible insights for health care providers, administrators, and/or funders that can be used to optimize the performance of primary health care
- Concept
As we are dealing with factors that involve research from several institutions and the dependence on volunteers to participate in the research, we decided to open a non-profit company and at this moment we need a lot of help to develop a business model that is sustainable and viable to be developed in the Brazil.
We believe that the WFP Innovation Accelerator will be very important in helping us at this time and will also help us to develop a cost-effectiveness plan and start a non-profit organization. In addition, financial support will greatly contribute to the development of the platform's back end.
The ASDO platform will be an innovative platform for centralizing volunteers and scientific research in a single platform, considering the different types of research involving human, which can be research in the social or health area, clinical trial, or cohort study, or longitudinal study, or any type of research involving data collection and/or experimental intervention in human, as any of these researches can be classified with the type of unique or continuous research and with the methodology involving the type of participation by questionnaire, by call, by sending documents or in person.
In addition, we are presenting the research to the population in a very simple way, as the volunteer will easily see how many stages the research will consist of and how they will participate in the survey.
Another innovation is that volunteers will be able to receive a notification informing them about the scientific article of the research they participated, thus promoting the popularization of scientific knowledge, since one of the requirements for the publication and dissemination of a research on the platform can be for the researcher to ensure that the research will result in a scientific article published in an open access journal, so it is expected that more articles will be made available with open access (we are still evaluating the feasibility of this). Another requirement is that the researcher must mention in the methodology of the article that the "ASDO Research System" was used, thus promoting greater dissemination of the platform.
We also believe that surveys will spend less time and less financial resources on recruiting volunteers, as the result of one survey can be used to pre-screen volunteers for other surveys.
Research may also become safer as we will ensure compliance with all research ethics resolutions. Volunteers will be able to ethically report irregular surveys and, when necessary, surveys can be stopped in a matter of seconds.
