Baobab Homeless Women & Children Art Society
We are working with street connected children, providing, temporary rehabilitation home, psycho social support, academic scholarship, but but also supporting youth and women in entrepreneurship as long as we understand that the main course of street connected children in our areas is traditional culture and taboos leading to early pregnancies and early marriage. Also as we are in the biggest corridor of tourism we have many children migrating from rural areas coming for begging but also working in farms.
Our census shows that only in our district around 200 up 300 children are visible in the street girls being invisible for different reasons as mentioned but visible ranging from 25% of all children.
So our main role is to protect children rights, socially, academically and psychologically. And promoting equality for all children.
My solution. As per these children need equality. Based on the challenge. By doing Mobile school and establishing children academic clubs and club leaders in the street .
Mobile school facilitates accessibility of children instead of them coming we follow them in their sites. and this do not end to street children but also family children's.
Children clubs facilitates communication and information transfer to children themselves, instead of our teams roaming for checking them they do it for us.
Our solution serves most vulnerable children, those connected to street and children who didn't have chance for school. we reintegrate them to school until age of 16. Can access primary education and return to formal school system.
But also as pregnant girls and those with girls didn't have chance for school, we provide them chance to be in qualitative Technics and reintegrated o forma school but also vocational skills.
women mainly single mother we offer them vocational skills for self sustainability until recovery and then reintegrate children to their families.
We have confirmed to university and employed now supporting their families.
Baobab is a non Government organisation, legally registered, working under social welfare department under ministry of health and social work. As NGO we are working in collaboration with the government. Me and my team we have three main strategies.
Community engagement. this program helps us to involve local leaders, religion leader of all religions other NGO's, public school and other counter parts about our duties plans for them to preach about equality and rights of this children and women.
Community sensitization. this we do by ourselves in different places to inform community about rights of this children and women about equality for most vulnerable children. including advocacy to their special day like international day for street children on 12th April, African Child day on 16th of June.
We also do street work and family visitation. This helps us to know the situation of these children how they live their life stories their families and also confirm their stories to local leaders.
- Support timely and manageable assessments to help under-resourced communities better plan, monitor, and evaluate learning
- Pilot
Our biggest aim is to find more ideas and contact to partners all over the world dealing with vulnerable children and women.
- Human Capital (e.g. sourcing talent, board development, etc.)
Yes it will. I remember before baobab i was working in another NGO and among thing that made me and my team move much was this tactic.
I started establishing street connected teams and piloted leaders among them, and we made them as ambassadors. to inform us on any abuse, violation of children rights, sickness, newcomers. we succeed a lot. but now with my team we have clubs. sport clubs, health clubs, academic clubs, security clubs and their leaders.
But also many children were not coming to school so we started a street site sessions until we get into connection with Mobile school from Belgium an we received a mobile school kit. by following them many children are free to join free to go. Our motto is "Education & entertainment"
Our main goal is to inform global community about children rights,. In the world there are million children's connected to street others are killed, abused, socially excluded as they are not trusted. But also empower more low economy families and sensitize community about taboos and social abuse.
This can be achieved by engaging in network with global partners and to create a network that can reach every child in the world and community as these children are coming from the community.
We are stepping well. We are in partnership with many NGO's dealing with children internationally. But also some of the global NGO's so we are sharing a lot. Even in my linkedin i share several times.
We provide quality education because our children are going to boarding school.
Children are well protected.
Gender equality
We train women for self sustainability
And we still striving to promote Health access to children along the rural areas by providing health cards to most vulnerable children.
My Vulnerability is not disability. Vulnerability can only stop your potential but not to limit your potential. Once you find an opportunity you will reach your potential.
Based on my experience from last job as project coordinator. Many children changed their lives and acquired measurable settlements socially academically and psychologically through mobile school. After reintegrating to public school they become champions and so almost 35% are already working for themselves and supporting their families 40% still in school and 25% finished university still looking for a job. So am quite sure that this works well.
By now we don't use any technology. but for sure is very important to have subject filled tablets that children can use for their studies. example tablet laboratories this can so helpful. with no access to games other informal materials. But children can access any type of scholastic materials for their level. primary, secondary, college and universities.
