Learning Kingdom Program
Research has demonstrated that engaging students in the learning process increases their attention and focus, motivates them to practice higher-level critical thinking skills, and promotes meaningful learning experiences. Instructors who adopt a student-centered approach to instruction increase opportunities for student engagement, which then helps everyone more successfully achieve the course’s learning objectives.
In Puerto Rico, the report on school dropouts in Puerto Rico, corresponding to the 2019-2020 academic year, identifies some 15,070 school dropouts, the highest number recorded by the Department of Education (DE) in the last six academic years. Hurricanes and earthquakes have had several repercussions, one of the most affected areas has been education. The students were left without a school because the earthquake knocked them down, there was no place where the children could go to get an education while these centers were being fixed. Parents had to work but had no place to leave their children, they chose to stay at home and many of them lost their jobs. One of the effects caused by this was the academic lag that the children present, the lack of motivation, the lack of enthusiasm and hope.
Learning Kingdom Program (LKP) will provide fun and relevant educational services in which the child can enjoy what they are learning. The program allows children to be part of their learning, develops their potential by analyzing, evaluating and creating something new through games and technology. LKP reinforces knowledge and strengthens skills in math, science, language, writing, reading fostered by play and varied activities according to the needs of each child.
Fun Learning Kingdom is committed with parents, communities, schools, non-profits and the state to improve academic achievement and provide children with new learning opportunities after school hours. We will be an alliance with entities, communities and parents to work together with these children who is in need.
The program has three impact elements:
1. Connect with the children and diagnose their needs and create a flexible academic plan that they can execute. The children actively participates in this plan with the aim of creating a good relationship to strengthen their commitment to the learning process.
2. Involve parents in the teaching-learning process, restore their confidence in the product provided. Strengthen communication channels to be successful in all processes.
3. Teachers are a key piece in relation to the child and in the process of learning from them. Communication with teachers is important to be more effective and authenthic in the services.
Additionally, we provide individualized education for children, parents, and the school community. We use the innovation of technology with the STEM program and virtual academic platforms that allow the student greater access to information. We offer mentoring and tutoring to parents to guide and support them in their children's education through webinars and workshops. We do a needs study with the participants to find out what their interests are and to be able to provide a more accurate service.
Learning Kingdom Program assist children in the private and public schools from K-12 in Cidra, Puerto Rico in the hours of after school, providing help and support to those with academic needs. The children of the town of Cidra and other surrounding towns have been deprived of educational services due to earthquakes, hurricanes and the pandemic. Many of them have not been able to return to school and are behind in different subjects such as Math, Spanish, English and Science.
Learning Kingdom Program provides services to these populations impacting the subjects of English, mathematics and science in extended hours and many of them in regular class hours. For the children of the regular class schedule, we provide the internet connection and the technological equipment for their virtual classes. In addition, we help them with their academic needs by giving them instant support when they take their virtual classes and also we give them the transportation.
Learning Kingdom Program promotes the participation of the communities we serve. We listen to them and engage them to better understanding their needs. In addition, our participants can have the opportunity to get involved in the project by taking forward the situations they are facing.
Learning Kingdom Program is an initiative based on one of the priorities on the community in their agendas. The concern children education in the communities was growing for these groups of people. Attending these events provided us a very clear vision and a real existential framework of the need. We are on the agenda and at the events as volunteers and as sponsors.
Having the support of the communities in the project is necessary for the information to be accessible. Attend events where people can discuss issues, it is a very good way to share ideas in each community. In these forums and special events in the communities it is very important to provide feedback, reports and dissemination of the plan. Volunteering in community activities builds confidence in the project.
